Mental Health Consultation

For this assignment, you will take on the role of a mental health professional providing a consultation to a colleague. Your colleague in this case happens to be a licensed clinical psychologist. Carefully review the PSY645 Fictional Mental Health Consultation Scenario which provides information on your colleague’s patient and specific questions your colleague has posed to you as a consultant. Once you have reviewed the scenario, research a minimum of two peer-reviewed articles in the Ashford University Library related to the situation(s) presented in the scenario and how these have been approached and treated in previous cases.

Write an evaluation of the patient’s symptoms and presenting problems within the context of one theoretical orientation (e.g., psychoanalytic, cognitive, behavioral, humanistic, etc.). Summarize views of these symptoms and presenting problems within the context of at least one historical perspective and two theoretical orientations different from the one used in your evaluation (e.g.:, cognitive, humanistic, psychodynamic, integrative) in order to provide alternative viewpoints. To conclude, justify the use of diagnostic manuals and handbooks besides the DSM-5 that might be used to assess this prospective patient.

The Mental Health Consultation:

  • Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and  must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use at least two peer-reviewed sources in addition to the course text.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Define Psychological Well-being.

Find out how happy you are.  Take short assessment at: http://sonjalyubomirsky.com/subjective-happiness-scale-shs/

Discussion:

After taking the Subjective Happiness Scale, you learned that most people are fairly happy.  What surprises you about this?  What do you think contributes to our happiness?

Scoring of assessment:

More detail on the scoring is on the assessment site:

Scoring:  Add together the 4 item scores.  Item 4 is reverse coded, so that if you scored 1 give yourself a 7.  Then divide the total score by 4 to give you a range between 1 and 7.

Interpretation:  The world adult population scored, on average, between 4.5 and 5.5.

Overview

At the beginning of this Module, you took the BPA Self-Report Inventory, then received an analysis of your personality.  If you were somewhat curious or even skeptical about the nature of the questions, you might not be surprised to find out that BPA stands for Bogus Personality Assessment; it was a fake test.  What might surprise you, though, is that every student in the class received the same analysis, again, because it was all just made up and fake.

The purpose of this deceptive activity:

This activity was designed to help you experience first-hand just how easily we tend to accept and support the results of one oversimplified personality test.  Remember, personality test results are not definitive and should never be used alone to make important decisions about ourselves or other people.

Discussion questions:

· What was your initial reaction to your BPA Analysis?

· Did you think it accurately described your personality?

· As you look back at it now, how do you think so many students get caught in believing that it is a legitimate test and an accurate analysis?

· How do you feel about the deception you experienced for the sake of learning about personality assessments?

And lastly, what is the most important lesson you learned in this activity about personality assessments?

Identify one’s individual positive traits and how these might aid in improved living.

Writing Assignment

For this Discussion, please address each of the following:

Pleasant Life: Design a beautiful day for yourself. Think about activities that you would find highly enjoyable and those that are important to you. Describe what you would do, how you would do it, and your individual positive traits and strengths you have to carry out your plan.  Finally, explain why you think Martin Seligman believed that taking the time to lead a pleasant life can benefit our psychological well-being.

Good Life: Decide on some unpleasant or tedious task that you must do. Think about how you can accomplish it in a more invigorating way. Describe what you would do, how you would do it, and your individual positive traits and strengths you have to help you transform the unpleasant task into a pleasant one.  Finally, explain why you think Martin Seligman believed that taking the time to lead a good life can benefit our psychological well-being.

Meaningful Life: Plan the “perfect” surprise for someone who needs it.  Think about what is important to that person and how you can help them.  Describe what you would do, how you would do it, and your individual positive traits and strengths you have to carry out your plan. Finally, explain why you think Martin Seligman believed that taking the time to lead a meaningful life can benefit our psychological well-being.

Personal Explorations Workbook and Paper One project that you will complete during this course is the Personal Explorations Workbook and Paper. This workbook contains five surveys that you are to complete and score on your own. The surveys assess certain personality traits that we all possess to one degree or another. In given modules, you will be requested to complete some of these surveys, score them, and then submit your scores for that week. The following workbooks will be completed:

 Personal Explorations Workbook 1: Happiness Profile  Personal Explorations Workbook 2: Self-Monitoring Scale  Personal Explorations Workbook 3: Social Avoidance  Personal Explorations Workbook 4: Assertive Job Hunting  Personal Explorations Workbook 5: Sexuality Scale

Note that all Personal Explorations Workbooks will be submitted to the appropriate Dropbox in the assigned module.

As you work along, you are also to keep a document in which you interpret your scores and explain how your score is reflective of your behavior. In some cases, you may be surprised of you score – elaborate on this and explain why you think the survey is under or overestimating this certain characteristic about you.

At the end of Module 7, you will submit these written accounts of your scores as one document. This component counts as 10% of your grade, so be sure to take it seriously! You might find you learn something new about yourself, or confirm hunches about how you react or behave in certain situations.

The paper should evaluate aspects of the core value personal development.

Assignment 2: Cultural Competence And Sensitivity

Not only is context important in determining whether an individual’s behavior meets the criteria for a mental disorder, but culture and family background can also be important factors. Some behaviors would clearly be “abnormal” in any culture or family, while other behaviors are not so clearly defined.

Using your textbook and the Argosy University online library resources, research the role of cultural norms in identifying mental disorders. Based on your research, respond to the following:

  • Why is culture an important consideration in the interview, assessment, and diagnostic process?
  • How might your own cultural, ethnic, or family values, rules, or traditions be misinterpreted as “abnormal” by someone from a dissimilar background? Give examples in your answer.

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. If you refer to research information, cite sources applying APA standards.

By Saturday, May 6, 2017, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, May 10, 2017, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Discuss the conventions that are typical in films of that genre (or sub-genre).

Assignment 1 (300 words)

As you prepare to write this discussion, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Review the Modeled Discussion.
  • Read any required and recommended reading materials for this week, especially Chapter 4 from your text and the articles by Grant and Wright.
  • Select a full-length film from the AFI 10 Top 10 list.   http://www.afi.com/10top10/

Reflect

Genre, a category of artistic production characterized by similarities in composition and style, is a term used to discuss literature, music, art, and film. It is particularly useful in critical applications because it distinguishes a work within a context of similar works. In film, we are familiar with certain broad genre categories such as horror, science-fiction, romance, and drama.

Understanding genre helps provide the viewer with certain expectations about film. For instance, the film The Conjuring trailer (Version 2) is of the horror genre and thus can be discussed in context with other horror films. More specifically, it is of the sub-genre, supernatural horror, so it can be discussed in context with, say, The Exorcist trailer. Making this distinction enables the audience to situate their reaction within a particular framework.

Write

Identify a film and classify it according to its genre (or sub-genre). Include a link(s) to a trailer or scene(s) from the film. You may choose to continue with a film you have already discussed.

  • Discuss the conventions that are typical in films of that genre (or sub-genre).
  • Explain how this specific film meets the expectations of its genre.

Include the name or partial name of the film you identified in the “Subject” line of your discussion. Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Assignment 2  (300 words)

Mise en scène is a term meant to encompass the arrangement and use of a variety of design elements in creating the visual theme of a film. Please look through Chapter 5 (Mise en Scene and Actors) for more information on this term.

As you prepare to write this discussion, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Read any required and recommended reading materials for this week, especially Chapter 5 (Mise en Scene and Actors).
  • Select a full-length film from the AFI 10 Top 10 list.  http://www.afi.com/10top10/

Reflect

It can be easier to grasp the importance of the term mise en scène if we break it down into its component elements. This week, we’ll look at the impact of lighting choices on the creation of meaning in a film.

In any film, the intensity and direction of lighting will influence how an image is perceived by the viewer, and it can establish or enforce particular themes. Think back over films you have watched and consider how the use of lighting in key scenes helped establish the theme or tone.

Write https://ashford.mediaspace.kaltura.com/media/Adding+Pictures+and+Video+to+Introductions+and+Discussions/0_bqh36hrs

Please view the video Adding Pictures and Video to Discussions and Introductions for guidance on how to integrate multimedia with your response.

Using specific examples from your chosen film, write a post in which you

  • Identify the type of lighting used in the film (traditional three-point, high-key, or low-key) and assess the impact of the lighting used to establish the theme.
    • What are the benefits of the style of lighting used?
    • How did this technique contribute to the theme?
    • How was the lighting technique suited to the genre of the film? For example, documentary films tend to rely on natural light as a way of creating an overall tone of authenticity.
  • Compare how the scene would play if different choices had been made.

You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. All sources should be documented in APA style.

It is suggested that you approach this post by focusing your attention on the same film you will write about in this week’s “Genres and Genre Film” assignment.

The Discussion Board / Modeled Examples English 225

In any course, the Discussion Board represents an incredibly important area of engagement for students and faculty. At its best, the forum is an engaging and active

space where students offer their views on key course concepts and test those views with

rigorous responses to their peers. It also offers faculty the opportunity to encourage

deeper levels of critical thinking through robust commentary that can sometimes develop

into a sustained dialogue – in the specific forum, and throughout the class!

With these points in mind, we have provided some exemplary model discussion

responses. Note that the annotated student responses are actual responses by students

– we’ve just added specific references to key areas.

Week Two Discussion: Genre Theory [Student Post] Paranormal Activity is a horror movie [Student identifies the film’s genre] that I have watched and was intrigued by. Although many may debate the likelihood of these events

happening, it is scary to think about. “Horror films effectively

center on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and strange and alarming events”

(Goodykoontz & & Jacobs, 2014). [Here, the student directly references the text, though without introducing the quote] Paranormal Activity did all of those things by having events happen that nobody can explain. [The prompt asks students to discuss the conventions that are typical in films of that genre (or sub-genre)] An invisible presence haunts this family at night. Things are found moving with no explanation as to

why (no windows open, no people present). As shown in this clip while the couple is

sleeping, the sheets are moving and the door slams shut but nobody is there:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQXm9BBQNuQ (BenB, 2013). [Student includes a link to a clip from the film] This creates a fear because it cannot be explained. You want to think, who is there or who is doing this, but in this movie it isn’t a person. There

isn’t someone messing around or someone that can be caught and stop it. Although

there is not blood and violence in this movie, it still keeps viewers on the edge of their

seat by trying to figure out what this presence is. Makes you think if this could really

happen.
