Hello class,

One of the impending changes to identity and mindset that needs to be analyzed is the transition from a learner to researcher. Most learners that begin a doctoral program do so with some measure of confidence having previously completed a graduate program – the master’s degree – before being granted permission to pursue the doctorate. While it is a good thing to retain experiences and make connections to the previous graduate program, a mistake that learners often make is to assume that a doctoral program will be similar to the master’s program. This can facilitate unrealistic expectations for learners regardless of where the master’s was completed. Understanding that the doctorate is different from the master’s and that the doctoral experience is different for each individual enhances the ability of the learner to be successful on the doctoral journey. The struggle that Brenda and Michael experienced in transitioning to a doctoral program (Gardner, 2008).

What do you expect some of the differences will be between your master’s degree program and the doctoral program? What changes to identity and mindset are expected? What will be your socialization opportunities?

Question 1. Congratulations on being accepted to Grand Canyon University’s doctoral program. This is a big step in your academic career and you should be very proud. Many of you are probably very excited to begin discussing issues surrounding your topic. Your passion is an important part of the process, but it will also require a shift in mindset that requires learners to move toward becoming efficient, independent researchers.

What is your perception of researchers and the role you believe they serve in the academic community? What kinds of mental and behavioral changes do you think you will need to make in order to become a successful researcher?

Question 2. Many learners approach a doctoral program with great enthusiasm. However, enthusiasm and passion alone do not guarantee success. Often, learners want to begin the research process immediately without the proper skills in place to be successful. Although, passion is necessary, it is important that all learners develop a plan of action to be successful. All learners must make a transition from being a student completing assignments to being a self-directed researcher. This requires students to be self-motivated, to engage in reflective scholarly practice, and to be receptive to feedback and critique from peers and faculty.

How might these three practices support your development of a doctoral identity and help you meet the academic expectations for doctoral learners? What potential challenges to do you foresee with incorporating these practices into your routine? What adjustments will you need to make to overcome these challenges? (This response does not require research support.)

At the same time, Red Bull is a great example of an innovative, high-growth company that discovered a little-known, poor-selling product in Thailand and revitalized it, growing into a multibillion-dollar, highly profitable firm as a result. Visit the Red Bull website at http://www.redbull.com. Have you ever run across a product in one country that could be used in another country to grow a company like Red Bull? What are other examples of this type of opportunity?
