  • Will there be a war or planning for a war?
  • Will the budget differ if a democrat or republican is in the white house? If democrat or republican has controlled of congress?

The purpose of the weekly assignments is to improve your ability to critique selected

defense reports, studies and briefings. They will help us to help you to quickly grasp the analytical foundation of any work, evaluate it, and to offer your views on it-· the key steps in critical thinking about defense analyses.

Because any defense leader-or any leader, for that matter-has limited time to spend on individual issues, a good critique must be succinct and dispassionate. Thus, your critiques are limited to 500 words. Good critiques are lean, crisp and, above all, illuminating. Good critiques also stand on their own-not requiring the reader to be intimately familiar with the analysis.

The following will help you get started:

After reading the work, and before you begin to write, try to fit the analysis into proper context. Keep in mind the setting in which a decision maker-the analysis’s and its

critique’s consumer-will view the work.

Next, identify the key assumptions that underlie The work Identify them explicitly (sometimes the author will help you), and decide the degree to which you agree or disagree to which you agree or disagree substantially with any particular assumptions, note why.

Identify alternative assumptions, if appropriate and possible. Pose at least one

competitor assumption (usually, one you’d prefer), and contrast its viability.

If important facts are incorrect –especially if they influence the results of the analysis –

identify and correct them. If other evidence or facts were omitted, characterize and add

them.

Finally, decide whether or the author’s conclusions flow from the works logic and evidence. If not jot down why not.

Decision Making And Policy

You are a staff member for a state legislator. Many issues in your state have recently become a hot topic. The legislator has formed a committee to address some of the issues brought to them by staff. The legislator’s intention is to hear policy briefs and then implement action to begin solving some of the hot topic issues in the state. You have decided to present a policy brief on an issue that you are passionate about. You will need to prepare a short presentation to present your brief to the committee. Do the following:

Review the following to help you structure your policy brief correctly:

https://www.governor.wa.gov/tags/policy-brief

https://www.seattle.gov/Documents/Departments/Council/Issues/RegulatingShortTermRentals/Regulating-Short-Term-Rentals—Policy-Brief.pdf

Part I:

Write a 500-750 word policy brief that analyzes the problem you chose specifically for your state. The policy should be concise and follow the general structure of such a policy brief. At a minimum, your policy brief should contain the following:

  • A title
  • A summary of the problem
  • At least 3 possible solutions
  • Statement and explanation of the recommended solution with rationale
  • The implications and benefits of the recommended policy
  • Brief conclusion
  • At least 3 sources used to support claims
  • Graphics and/or other visual elements so it reflects the formatting of a professional policy brief

Part II:

Create a presentation that briefly outlines the policy. Include your decision making process for presenting the information contained in the policy.

Use two to three scholarly resources to support your decision making process, some of the sources may be the same as sources used to support your recommendations in the policy brief.

You will turn in both your policy brief and presentation. See the document “submitting multiple attachments” for assistance in attaching multiple documents to the assignment dropbox.

Your presentation will require an outline of your presentation speech or speaker notes depending on the format chosen for the presentation. For PowerPoint, 8-12 slides are required with speaker notes of 50-75 words for each slide. Reference information must be provided at the end of the presentation. Reference and title slides do not count as part of the slide count.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

What is the main challenge faced by democracies?

In the appendix to your book you will find a copy of Federalist #10 by James Madison. You can
also find it online at http://www.constitution.org/fed/federa10.htm and numerous other sites.
Although it is not very long, it is densely worded, and is probably the most important primary
source one can consult on the theory behind our government’s design. Please read this selection
carefully and summarize Madison’s theories and arguments.

Summarization is an important skill to develop for academic work and for many pursuits. The
point of this exercise is for you to closely read a document and extract the main points.
While you are reading please keep in mind the following questions:
What is the main challenge faced by democracies? How can this problem be solved? Is there
more than one solution? Is one better than the other? Why?

General criteria:
Your paper must be typed. Please use standard margins of one inch on all sides and a
12 point font . Your paper should be 500-600 words long, which is about 2 to 3 double spaced pages. Please
watch your spelling.
