Important Note: You should create an initial thread of at least 50 words and respond to at least two threads created by classmates. Your initial response ONLY should contain supporting data and the sources of your data (using MLA “in-text” and “Work Cited” citation formatting).

Research Proposal For Comparative Essay

Format for the Research Proposal for Comparative Essay

The proposal should follow this format and be between one and two typed pages. Use these numbers to separate sections.

1) Your Name, Title of the Proposed Project.

2) Write an introductory statement: The purpose of the introductory statement is to catch the attention of the reader and to get them interested in the general subject matter. It sets the stage for your research questions or puzzle. It often can contain a dramatic statement to highlight the need for the study. It should be at least a good paragraph long.

3) State the problem or puzzle:

For example: The goal of this study is to . . . .explain why . . .

discover if there is a relationship between . . .

understand the causes (or effects) of . . .

4) State your research question or a main question and sub-question. For each question, you need to identify:

a) the dependent variable (the outcome which you want to explain).

b) the independent variables (the various factors that might explain the outcome).

5) State your (preliminary) argument(s). This is your assessment of what independent variable (or combination of independent variables) that you think will answer the research question(s). As you do your research, you can change your opinion, but remember you don’t have to be “right” to have interesting findings. In other words, don’t select evidence to fit your argument.

6) Describe the structure of the paper. How are you going to organize the paper so that you can answer your question(s)? What methods will you use to answer your research question? We will talk about the structured focused comparison approach in class and I think many of you will use this approach. Think of this as a draft outline.

7) Preliminary bibliography: This should include at least 5 promising items for use in your paper. I expect to see academic sources (for example, Journal articles, books, research center reports, IO documents, government docs etc). Wikipedia or other encyclopedia type sources are not accepted.

Globalyceum Composition—An Online Writing Training Workshop

You will find an online writing training workshop called Globalyceum Composition in Student Information in your Globalyceum Student Portal. Students using this step-by-step workshop have been very successful in writing good analytical papers. The online workshop contains information, videos, and practice tests on writing the parts of a paper–thesis, outline, and draft. It also has instructions for specific aspects of the writing process–topic sentences, transitions, punctuation, as well as introduction and conclusion paragraphs. I recommend that you use the online workshop to help you compose this research paper.

Submission

You may submit the paper through ILearn or Globalyceum. I will inform you of my preferred submission location during the semester. If your paper is late, I will deduct points for each day it is late.

Grading

The written assignment is worth 300 points. While I like to grade in a wholistic style, meaning I judge the paper as a whole when I give a grade, I will be looking for the following features in your paper, and I have listed them in the attached Grading Guidelines.

Grading Guidelines for Written Assignment

Thesis and Introduction

The student has a clear position or assertion about the state of either California campaign finance reform or government transparency. The thesis is located in the introductory paragraph of the paper. The first paragraph does a good job of introducing the reader to the topic.

See Globalyceum > Student Information > Composition > Thesis and Draft > Introduction Paragraph

Research and Sources

The student has done an effective job of researching the paper in the library and/or on the internet. There are at least 10 sources. They are from diverse sites or types of literature. The accuracy and credibility of the sites and sources is good.

See my recommended sites on the Written Paper Instructions for examples of quality.

Argument of the Paper

The paper is at least 6 pages double-spaced, in a size 12-font, and in a standard font style, such as Times or Times New Roman. The paper has clear topic sentences in the paragraphs followed by evidence from the sources. The paper has a conclusion paragraph that summarizes the argument.

See Globalyceum > Student Infomration > Composition > Draft

Citation

The paper is properly cited with inline notes in APA style and a bibliography or Works Cited page attached.

See many cites on the web for APA guidelines, but the Purdue OWL is a good place: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

Punctuation and Grammer

Since this is college, I expect that your paper will have complete, coherent sentences and proper punctuation. While I emphasize ideas over conventions, it is often difficult to read even a good idea paper when it is filled with misspellings, bad grammar, and poor punctuation. Your computer’s spelling checker and grammar checker should alert you to problems, so there is little excuse for these errors. There is a site in Globalyceum Composition that will help you with punctuation.

Current Supreme Court Cases

Getting Started

Step 1: Choose Your Case

Choose a case that has either been decided or will be decided this term:

You can go to OYEZ.ORG 2013 cases for a list of current cases. If you decide to research some of the cases that have gotten a lot of press recently, you are welcome to choose one of these to research:

  • Town of Greece v. Galloway
  • Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby
  • Fernandez v. California
  • Riley v. California
  • McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission

Step 2: Research Your Case

Find out the following information about your case:

  • Has a decision been made in your case? If yes, what was that decision? How many Justices voted for/against the decision? (The page for the case you are researching on OYEZ.ORG will have this information – at the bottom of the page you can also see who voted for/against this as well as sort by ideology).
  • What is the issue being discussed? Summarize the main points.
  • What are the two sides of argument? Summarize those.
  • Why do you think this issue this issue is important? What impact could this have?
  • Do you think ideology impacted this case? If so, how?

Some places to go to research more about your issue:

  • Oyez.org
  • SCOTUS Blog (the Supreme Court Blog – the search feature will pull up information about your case)
  • PCC Shatford Library Databases. Try Opposing Viewpoints in Context or National Newspapers Core.  If accessing off campus, you will need to enter your LancerPoint ID and password.

Step: 3 Create Your Summary + Thought Questions

Combine the information you have found and create a 300-400 word summary and analysis of this issue for your initial post in your own words based on your research. If you are having difficulty with your writing, you can get help from PCC’s online tutoring service. Please do so before your initial post due date!

Directions

For your Initial Post due by Thursday 11:59 PM:

  1. Post your summary of your article and the websites you got your information from. Make certain to include a citation. For help with citations you can check out this PCC Citation pageCitations.

    1. If decision is made …. , what do you think would happen?
    2. How should the public respond to…?
    3. Why do you think…?
    4. How do you feel about…?
