Business Case Study

Two curious news stories. The first comes from the BBC and tells of a shopaholic, a woman who purchased so much she could hardly fit it all in her apartment. When she passed away from pneumonia, it took more than a day to find her body underneath all the purchases. A friend commented, “It gave her pleasure to buy things, she only bought things she really liked.”“Shopaholic Died under Purchases,” BBC, July 28, 2009, accessed June 2, 2011, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/manchester/8173271.stm.

The second story relates that in India, according to a UN report, there are about 560 million cell phone users, but only 360 million people have access to toilets.“India Has More Mobile Phones Than Toilets: UN report,” Telegraph, April 15, 2010, accessed June 2, 2011, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/7593567/India-has-more-mobile-phones-than-toilets-UN-report.html.

  1. Consumerism replaces the model of the consumer as someone who buys necessities in order to get on with their lives, with the model of the consumer as someone who buys in order to live. Can you put that definition in your own words?
  2. How could the story of a woman buried and dead underneath her endless purchases be construed as an example of consumerism?
  3. How could the story of India having more cell phones than toilets be construed as an example of consumerism?
  4. One way of characterizing much of the work of advertising agencies is as nurturing consumerism. Can you make the ethical case that advertising agencies should be banned from society?
  5. In ethical terms, make the case that consumerism is good.

How suitable are the choices and deployment of these interactive features?

Select any example of a visualisation or infographic, maybe your own work or that of others. The task is to undertake a deep, detailed ‘forensic’ like assessment of the design choices made across each of the five layers of the chosen visualisation’s anatomy. In each case your assessment is only concerned with one design layer at a time.

For this task, take a close look at the interactivity choices:

  1. Start by identifying all the interactive features deployed, listing them under the headers of either data or presentation adjustments
  2. How suitable are the choices and deployment of these interactive features? If they are not, what do you think they should have been?
  3. Go through the set of ‘Influencing factors’ from the latter section of the book’s chapter to help shape your assessment and to possibly inform how you might tackle this design layer differently
  4. Also, considering the range of potential interactive features and functions, what would you do differently or additionally?

Why is the demand for healthcare products usually inelastic?

1.During the last five years average daily occupancy at Autumn Acres nursing home has slid from 125 to 95 even though Autumn Acres has cut its daily rate from $125 to $115. Do these data suggest that occupancy would have been higher if Autumn Acres had raised its rates? What changes in non-price demand factors might explain this? (There have been no changes in supply. The number of nursing home beds in the area has not changed during this period.)

2.Why is the demand for healthcare products usually inelastic? Why is the demand for an individual firm’s healthcare products usually elastic?

3.If the income elasticity of demand is 0.2, how would the volume of services change if income rose by 10 percent?

4.Your boss has asked you to describe how the demand for an over-the-counter sinus medication would change in the following situations. Assuming the price does not change, forecast whether the sales volume will go up, remain constant, or go down.

The local population increases.

A wet spring leads to a bumper crop of ragweed.

Factory closings lead to a drop in the area’s average income.

A competing product with a different formula is found to be unsafe.

A research study is published showing that the medication causes severe dizziness.

The price of another sinus medication drops.
