Week 2: Are leaders born or made?

1 1 unread reply. 1 1 reply.

Some folks believe that true leaders are born that way. “Either you got it, or you ain’t got it.”  Others believe that leaders can be developed and trained: leadership skills can be acquired even if one is not naturally gifted with such.

Consider this question:  Is leadership an innate trait with which one is born, or is leadership a skill that one can learn?  Answer this question.

Share your thoughts with the class, and back them up with examples, quotes, and/or articles.

For this assignment, you must compose a brief research paper/essay on the topic of leadership.

Requirements  ( Due Jan 13th)

  • Follow the instructions below
  • Write a two-page paper that thoroughly addresses the questions below. (Optional title page, two pages of content — 12 point font single spaced, 1-page bibliography citing your sources.)
  • Submit your paper to the instructor via Canvas
  • Identify a real person (dead or alive, present or past) whom you consider to be a great leader.   This could be a leader from any walk of life – military, political, religious, entertainment/arts, business, cultural change.  They need not be particularly famous or widely-known, as long as you can document their leadership style and influence as required below.
  • Spend some time researching the life and work of this great leader.  If possible, please include at least one book in addition to web-based sources and/or periodicals.  Be sure to properly cite all your sources.

Create an original essay of 3–4 pages, entitled “Corporate Entrepreneurship

Portfolio Project

A student portfolio project is an evolutionary collection of work-related products that are specific to the subject of the course. Portfolios are organized in a systematic manner for the purpose of communicating and demonstrating what a student has learned and achieved in the context of the course. This concept facilitates the application of theory learned in the course by providing the student with an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the subject matter in the context of student professional goals and competencies. The portfolio also enhances the assessment of student practice-related skills, which are difficult to measure through traditional comprehensive examinations.

Background:

For the Portfolio Project in this course, you will be tasked with finding four successful accounts of corporate entrepreneurship. The paper should follow APA style and formatting.

Guidelines:

Create an original essay of 3–4 pages, entitled “Corporate Entrepreneurship: Four Cases.” Search for four accounts of successful corporate entrepreneurship and utilize the information contained in Item 4 on p. 58 of the course text Entrepreneurship. In writing your paper, determine: What key factors for success are common among all these accounts? Which are unique? If one company can foster an entrepreneurial climate within an existing firm, what stops another company from copying its processes and taking away the initial advantage?

Your Portfolio must be carefully edited for grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, format, and APA adherence.

The paper should include:

  • Title page
  • Page numbers
  • Main headings for each section (names of the four corporations)
  • Sub-headings as necessary to stay organized and to provide clarity for the reader
  • In-text citations (not footnotes)
  • Reference list (must use at least four outside references in APA format)

The 3- to 4-page length specification is for the main body of the paper and does not include the title or reference pages.

Due by Sunday May 22, 2016.

Framing Messages In Response To Challenging Business Scenarios

Directions:

1. Review course materials:

Business Communications, chapter 6

Title: Jeff Bezos Confronts Criticism of Amazon’s ‘Brutal’ Workplace Conditions http://www.geekwire.com/2015/full-memo-jeff-bezos-responds-to-cutting-nyt-expose-says-tolerance-for-lack-of-empathy-needs-to-be-zero

Title: A Better Way to Deliver Bad News (article)

2. Read this scenario:

Mary rubbed her temples. What a day it had been! Managing a call center can be stressful, and today had been no exception. Sometimes her team performed flawlessly, and other times she imagined herself as the mother hen, flapping frantically to shoo her chicks from danger.

“No! No! Don’t escalate that call!” she’d just told Tom. “You can handle this one. Tell him …”

She was going to have to coach Tom about the irate caller with the “fried” hard drive, but it could wait until tomorrow. Before she could leave her office, her boss, Susan, appeared at the door.

“Mary. Good! I’m glad I caught you. We have a situation.”

Oh, no, Mary thought. Susan’s tone told her the news wouldn’t be good.

“We need two volunteers from your team to start working the midnight shift for the summer. They need to start tomorrow night,” Susan said.

“I thought all the shifts were covered,” Mary said.

“We lost two people last night and have to replace them right away,” Mary said. “You’ll have to pull your team together and use your leadership skills to get this covered quickly.”

The next morning, Mary faced having to break the news to her team of 10 call center representatives. She knew that they all had other commitments and that none of them would want to take the midnight shift. They’d each worked hard and consequently been promoted to the day shift. This was going to kill morale and cause some of her team members some hardship.

3. Take on the role of Mary. Your task is to break the news to your team in the best way possible and to persuade two of them to agree to work the midnight shift all summer. Be creative and use the effective communication skills that you’ve learned in this module’s readings. Write out the announcement that Mary will make to her team, along with her strategy for breaking the news and persuading them to volunteer. You can use dialogue, essay, narrative, or any form that meets the assignment criteria.

Write from Mary’s point of view (use “I” when talking about Mary, her thoughts, words and actions). Your paper should be about 450-500 words.

4. In the final paragraph, return to your own body! (give up being Mary), and reflect, personally, on how the principles for breaking bad news and persuading might help you in your own workplace communications.

5. Please use APA citations and references as needed. Submit your paper as an attachment to the dropbox.

Assignment Christian Worldview/Operations Management Integration Paper

Details:

For this assignment, you will discuss how Christian principles can be applied to an operations management dilemma:

Select one of the ethical dilemmas below from the text:

  1. Managing Quality (Chapter 6) (page 227)
  2. Process Strategy (Chapter 7) (page 291)
  3. Layout Strategy (Chapter 9) (page 379)
  4. Supply Chain Management (Chapter 11) (page 453)
  5. Inventory Management (Chapter 12) (page 502)

Briefly summarize the issue. Note that only a small portion of your paper’s content should be devoted to summarizing the issue.

Respond to the following question(s) in the text:

How can this issue be addressed from a Christian worldview? In other words, what guidance from a Biblical perspective could be applied to understand and possibly resolve the dilemma?  The following GCU websites may be helpful: Doctrinal Statement (http://www.gcu.edu/About-Us/Doctrinal-Statement.php) and Mission and Vision (http://www.gcu.edu/About-Us/Mission-and-Vision.php.)

In addition to addressing the questions, the student may also optionally frame the issue using ethical theories (Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, Distributive Justice, Virtue ethics and Covenantal ethics). Note however that the questions provided must be addressed.

Use external citations. Your paper should have at least six external citations (in additional to any Biblical citations) to help frame the issue. No Wikipedia citations are allowed.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Format: use Times New Roman (font size: 12) with 1-inch margins.
