How is the meaning of gallery sculpture different than other sculpture?

Topic 1.) Conduct internet resaerch. Examine and discuss all of the following sculptures:
– Robert Smithson, Spiral Jetty
– Serpent Mound
– Andy Goldsworthy, Reconstructed Icicles, Dumfriesshir

These are all site specific sculptures, meaning they were designed specifically for the physical place we find them. Often they are referred to as earthworks or land art. Examine and discuss all three of these works. Your answer should include:

  • Who is the artist (if known)?
  • From what era and culture is the sculpture?
  • How is the meaning of gallery sculpture different than other sculpture?
  • What gives meaning to the sculpture, or why is it important?
  • Think about how many galleries/museums have sculptures that were made in an artist’s studio and then sold to any place that could afford them.
  • Have you been to a sculpture garden? How many of those objects were designed for the site?

Analyze the context and themes of the artwork:

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • In your own words, write a clear, concise, and persuasive analysis of your assigned artwork (300-500-words).  The analysis should convince your reader of the validity of your objective interpretation. One-two paragraphs.
  • Make sure you do the following:
    • Clearly provide an objective analysis of the artwork (again, always presume your reader knows nothing about the artwork you are writing about; therefore, describe in a way that gives a very clear visual picture in the minds of your readers what they are looking at).
    • Use appropriate and correct terminology/art vocabulary terms
    • Always point to specific aspects of the artwork when making a subjective observation
    • Describe the relevant Elements of Art and Principles of Design used that contribute to the overall visual impact and content/meaning of the artwork
    • Describe/mention the medium used and any relevant techniques/processes used by the artist to create the artwork
    • Analyze the context and themes of the artwork:
      • How does the artwork relate to the time in which it was created?
      • What was happening politically, socially, economically, etc., that the artists were responding to?
      • What are the major themes present in the artwork? These should be based on your visual and contextual analyses, as well as your objective and subjective observations, of the said artwork.

To see the entire description of the Final Project, clink here > Final Project.

As you prepare for the Outline of your Final Outline, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Wherever you are in your writing process, it’s important to remember that you’re trying to show me what you’ve learned in the course.
  • Make observations and connections and integrate vocabulary and concepts we’re learning
  • Think about the organization. Simply listing the elements in the assignment prompt is not an outline
  • The thesis statement is the most important part of the outline HOW TO WRITE AN A+ THESIS STATEMENT
  • I would like to see a full sentence outline. The more complete your work is now, the more helpful and substantive my feedback can be
  • I look forward to seeing how your work is developing!
  • You should plan to spend about more time on this stage of the assignment (research and outline) than on the final stage of the assignment (rough draft and polish).
  • UMGC’s WRITING CENTER can assist you if you get stuck or need some extra help.
  • Final  Stage Two – Samples of Outline and Resources (Sample Outline.docx)(Student Example.docx)
