Describe methods to use in identifying and narrowing your research paper topic.

Prepare: As you prepare to write your response to this discussion assignment, it will be in your best interest to review the following resources:

  • Develop a Research Topic
  • Incorporate Sources into Your Research Paper
  • When considering a research topic, consider an interesting topic that is worth further research. For instance, having a strong opinion on a specific topic may deter you from thinking more critically, and therefore the research might end up being one-sided. It is a good idea to pick a topic in which you can provide a good argument for both sides of the societal issue.
  • Write: The first step in the research process is selecting a topic that is both interesting and manageable. For this discussion:
    •  identify two potential research topics.
    • Describe methods to use in identifying and narrowing your research paper topic.
    • Examine and summarize information from at least two scholarly sources for one of the topics that may prove valuable as you seek to defend your claims regarding your chosen topic.
    • Address why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.
    • Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references.
    • Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length

Question 3 of 3

Leadership
There are many schools of thought on the definition of leadership. Leadership may be defined as the ability and special penchant to create an arousal that inspires others to achieve their personal and organizational goals. This happens through a leader’s affluence to transfer something of intrinsic value to the follower. If a leader has nothing of value to offer, then they are just in a leadership position in name only (this is echoed by Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee (2002) who stated that great leaders move us and inspire the best in us). Northouse (2004) defines leadership as the process where an individual influences others to achieve a common goal. Further, Jones (1995) states that great leaders inspire themselves in the process of inspiring others. In the U.S. Army, leadership is defined as influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization (Army Leadership, 1999). Leadership may have different meanings to different people in different settings. In fact, Bennis (2003) compared leadership to beauty by stating that it is difficult to define, but you know it when you see it.
Provide an historical examination of leadership over the past decades. Choose at least two particular perspectives that have changed your outlook on leadership. Discuss 2-3 key axioms of leadership, 2-3 challenges faced by leaders, and 3-5 key characteristics one expects to find in a leader.

Prevention programs play an important role in the human services profession. Primary prevention refers to any intervention that occurs before the initial onset of a specific problem and covers many different activities.

Based on your Reading in the text and your own research, respond to the following questions:

  • Describe the various levels of prevention and give an example of an intervention at each level. Choose examples that are different from those already mentioned by your classmates.
  • Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the various levels of prevention in the context of a specific problem or disorder. Identify which level of prevention would be most effective with the issue or problem you have chosen. Again, choose something not already discussed by a classmate.
  • Respond to the question: why is an emphasis on primary prevention crucial in the human services field?
  • In order to be effective as a human service professional, it is important to become familiar with the resources available in our own community. Using the internet and other resources, research prevention programs in your community. Describe several of these programs and discuss the problems or disorders they are attempting to prevent. Do you think they are effective at this task? Why or why not?
