Final Assessment Case Study

Worth 20 points and 20% of course grade.

Objective of this assignment:

This activity serves as a final assessment for the course. It provides you the opportunity to demonstrate how well you have achieved the learning outcomes of the course. You are to provide your knowledge of the strategic and administrative function of Human Resources by thinking about the situation of Southwest Airlines recent merger and their expansion.

Deliverable:

Read and reflect on the case study below and prepare a response paper of not less than five pages (excluding title and reference pages) with appropriate in text citations. Demonstrate your research and analytical skills in developing your comprehensive paper by using the organizations website and outside articles written about the organization to supplement the information provided in the case study. However, the case study is unique in that it is focused on the HR ramifications and most of the outside reports you will locate articulate the business side of the merger or expansion possibilities. Tailor your paper to the HR ramifications of the merger and expansion.

Keep in mind that the purpose of this final assessment is for you to demonstrate your knowledge of the strategic and administrative function of Human Resources. While the business side of the situation is the foundation, it is the command of the needed tasks and role for the Human Resource function that you are to focus most of your attention.

Key Components

The key components of the paper are as follows:

1.  Title page

2.  Introduction in which you restate the issue(s) and state the purpose of the paper

3.  SWOT analysis from the HR perspective

4.  Recommendations to address the issues. Scholarly research is expected to support the recommendations.

Examples of issues that may want to be elaborated upon may be possible redundant positions, maintaining the culture of both organizations (or not), combining compensation and benefits plans and union involvement (just to name some).

5. There are many tasks for recruiting and hiring for the expansion (in various global locations). Think about and list what those tasks are.

6. Provide the metrics for evaluating the outcomes of the expansion of the organization (again, from an HR perspective).

7.  Synthesize and summarize your thoughts about the merger and expansion (from an HR perspective), including recommendations for aligning the HR function of the two organizations and addressing any of the S.W.O.T. assessment HR related elements as appropriate.

6.  Reference page containing at least five scholarly references cited in the paper and presented in APA guideline format

Situation:

Southwest Airlines is a major airline in the United States with limited flights outside the country. The organization has a strong culture which is described in the following excerpt from Gary Kelly, CEO Southwest Airlines found on the Southwest Airlines Website.Living the Southwest Way

We call this Living the Southwest Way, and it comprises three characteristics that we look for in job candidates and require of our Employees: a Warrior Spirit, a Servant’s Heart, and a Fun-LUVing Attitude. While it may sound simple (and it is), the impact can be profound. Our Culture has long been admired and has earned Southwest much recognition, including a yearly spot on Fortune’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” list (we ranked seventh this year) and the distinction of being named one of the Best Places to Work in Glassdoor.com’s 2013 Employees’ Choice Awards. (The following is fiction but is the situation to consider for this assignment). Due to the recent acquisition of AirTran Airways and with the possibility of acquiring other airlines that will expand the organization to other countries, Southwest Airlines will add thousands of employees quickly from any number of existing airlines in a variety of global locations.

Faced with the tasks of maintaining the values of the organization, consider and propose steps the Human Resources team will need to take to achieve a successful merger of the two companies and to expand to additional global locations.

PLEASE NOTE: Much has been written about Southwest Airlines, its culture and the recent merger. While that information may be used as reference material, the situation you have been asked to use for your application of your knowledge about HR is unique. Do not merely cut and paste from what you find in the documents you locate.

Evaluate the effect that public health has on the delivery of healthcare

Examine and research 1 chronic disease (e.g., heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, obesity) and write a paper that discusses the following:

  • A comparison of 2 health care policies that are in place (either at the state or federal level) that address the disease
  • The impact the disease has had on the U.S. population and health care system as a whole
  • Strategies that are in place to educate and promote prevention of the disease through public health at the federal and state levels
  • Any challenges and progress to date that has been made in preventing and reducing health risks associated with the disease
  • 2–3 strategies that may increase awareness, education, and prevention of that disease

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Your medical office has decided to audit all medical records for government compliance. As a medical office manager, you must utilize research to complete an operational plan for the audit as well as write up the tasks and policies that result from your audit findings.

DELIVERABLES

Part I: Operational Auditing

To complete operational plan you must:

  • Describe your procedures for auditing the medical records
    • Include a description of roles and responsibilities of yourself and your employees.
    • oInclude the information that you are asking the employees to audit the records for. (In other words, what critical information would you like to see evidence of in all medical records?)
  • Perform a risk assessment for the medical records system in your office.
    • Explain HIPAA guidelines and identify the relevant governmental policies that your office must comply with.
    • Analysis – Present a detailed analysis of the relevant arguments that are specific to the case.
    • Conclusion – State your conclusion of the case based on the findings, analysis, and rationale supporting your argument.
    • Explain the consequences of not complying with government patient confidentiality policies.

Part II: Post Audit Tasks

To complete your post-audit tasks you must:

  • Identify some common issues that would surface as a result of your audit. (You can utilize research to identify the types of issues and challenges that medical offices face.)
    • Describe how you, as an effective office manager, would solve the common issues.
    • Utilize effective communication and writing skills to create new employee policies that will rectify the issues surfaced in your audit.
  • Perform a risk assessment for the medical records system in your office.
    • Apply the principles of medical office management and explain how you would effectively implement the new policies throughout your medical office.
    • Include policies surrounding ethical behavior and why such behavior is important in the medical office.

Submit one document that includes your operational auditing plan and all of your post audit tasks.

Services Marketing (Gaps Model)

The goal of this assignment is to help you to understand and evaluate the service relationship that exists between you and a service provider with which you have a longer term relationship.

 

All of you would have a customer-provider relationship with various service providers but not many of you would have considered analysing that relationship from a services marketing perspective. You are to consider your interactions with one Service Company and undertake a services marketing analysis of the service.(One of the first tasks will be to select an appropriate service to analyse—discuss this with your group partner and come to a mutually acceptable solution.Speak to your lecturer if you need some help in selecting an appropriate service—but remember you need to have experienced the service from this provider).

 

Using the GAPS Model of Service Quality as the overarching framework along with other service models, you are to analyse the service and your expectations and perceptions of that service.Your group report should integrate theory to help explain and analyse the service experience.Do not simply describe what has happened to you—mere description is not analysis!

 

This assignment will require you to gain an understanding of the GAPS Model and to use multiple analytical tools to analyse your service.Do not just describe the service provider—find evidence, use analytical techniques to explore, try to identify why and how service gaps emerged or were dealt with.

 

As MBA students the expectation is that you explore issues in this report and show that you can think critically about aspects of services marketing.You are not expected to ‘cover everything’ in this assignment, but rather to use the GAPS Model as an overarching framework, and then explore particular aspects of services marketing in depth.Do not ask your lecturer for a ‘boilerplate’ pro format—take pleasure in the fact that you have some discretion to present a strong paper that reflects the analytic capabilities of your group.

 

You should start on this task right from week one—do not leave it until the last minute. Form your group early, and give your lecturer the names of the two group members.

  • Evidence of research and reading beyond the set text to support your analysis and discussion
  • The quality of your report, incl. presentation, use of diagrams, referencing, logical flow.
