What ethical principle(s) is your position based on?

I. Business’ Environmental Responsibility: The Market Approach

a. Protecting the Environment: An overwhelming consensus exists about the self-interested and prudential reasons for protecting the natural environment– humans have a right to be protected from undue harm.    i. What is the best means for achieving this goal? Are efficient markets or government regulation the most appropriate means for meeting the environmental responsibilities of business? Each of these two approaches has significant implications for business.

ii. From one perspective, if the best approach to environmental concerns is to trust them to efficient markets, then the responsible business manager simply ought to seek profits and allow the market to allocate resources efficiently.   1. By doing this, business fills its role within a market system which, in turn, serves the greater overall (utilitarian) good.

iii. On the other hand, if government regulation is a more adequate approach, then business ought to develop a compliance structure in order to insure that it conforms to those regulatory requirements.

iv. Defenders of the market approach contend that environmental problems are economic problems that deserve economic solutions.

 v. Fundamentally, environmental problems involve the allocation and distribution of limited resources.   1. Whether we are concerned with the allocation of scare non-renewable resources such as gas and oil, or the earth’s capacity to absorb industrial by-products such as CO2 or PCB, environmental challenges can be addressed through efficient markets.

Based on Chapter 9 readings, which position do you support? Market-Based or Regulatory-Based. What ethical principle(s) is your position based on? If you do not think this is an ethical issue, why not?

What are the factors the court looks at in determining whether a person is an independent contractor?

2 pages
You have just been hired by Greg’s Goofy Gadgets. You are an IT professional, and you are tasked solely with fixing computers for the company. The position is temporary—it is a 6-month contract. You will be paid $14.00 per hour, and taxes will not be withheld; you will be responsible for paying them on your own. The company has provided you with a computer to use while you are on the job, and it also hired 2 students on college break to work under you for the duration of the project; you will be considered their manager. Discuss whether you will be considered an independent contractor.

Be sure to answer the following questions to defend your position:

  • What are the factors the court looks at in determining whether a person is an independent contractor?
  • Are you an agent of the company? What constitutes an agent?
  • Based on the facts in the scenario, are you an independent contractor or an employee?

Does the mission statement explain what customer needs the company is trying to satisfy?

Evaluating Mission Statements

The mission statement describes the purpose of the organization (i.e., why the business exists). As outlined in the Mission Statements article, here are some things to consider when evaluating a mission statement:

  • Is the mission statement focused on satisfying customer needs rather than on the product?
  • Does the mission statement tell who the company’s customers are?
  • Does the mission statement explain what customer needs the company is trying to satisfy?
  • Does the mission statement explain how the company will serve its customers?
  • Does the mission statement fit the current market environment?
  • Is the mission statement based on the company’s core competencies?
  • Is the mission statement motivating and does it inspire employee commitment?
  • Is the mission statement realistic?
  • Is the mission statement specific, short, sharply focused, and memorable?
  • Is the mission statement clear and easily understood?
  • Does the mission statement say how the company wants to be remembered?

Review the following mission statements. Evaluate each mission statement based on the above criteria and explain how the mission statements meet or failed to meet those criteria.
