Assignment 2: Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are chronic and persistent behavioral and emotional disturbances that are often difficult to treat. Some professionals have argued that these disorders are not mental disorders at all, but personality styles—that these individuals are just odd or unusual. Review your textbook and a minimum of two peer-reviewed references and discuss the diagnostic and measurement challenges and issues related to personality disorders. What classification approach is currently used in the DSM? Explain this approach. Identify and discuss relevant research on the causation, diagnosis, and treatment of personality disorders.

Your assignment should be at least a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources and include a cover page and reference page. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

Assignment 1: Course Project Part II—Practice

You have researched the theoretical writings related to your selected mental disorder in the second part of the course project. In the third part, you have examined the practice related to the disorder.

You have conducted field research on practice related to the disorder, an interview with a mental health professional. Based on all of the information you have gathered, develop a paper that includes the following:

  • Describe the cause, extent, and nature of the disorder, such as number of people diagnosed and under treatment, demographics, and other factors of interest.
  • Explain how the selected disorder is diagnosed.
  • Explain how the selected disorder is treated. Be sure to include all the views on appropriate treatment and comment on diversity of views or dissent.
  • Differentiate the diagnosis of this disorder from those of the other disorders within the same diagnostic category.
  • Comment on culturally bound syndromes, cultural biases, or the interplay between assessment and diagnosis and culture.
  • Provide data from the professional interview completed relevantly and substantively integrating this information into the body of the paper. Provide the name of the interviewed professional with his/her credentials. Written transcripts of the interview should be recorded and submitted with the assignment (e.g. in paper as an appendices).

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Make sure to review the rubric so as to address all necessary criteria. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.doc.

Discussion 2

Read Chapter 3 of the text and watch the Connect video “How the Misinformation Effect Influences Memories.” In your initial post, address the following:

  • Reflect on an occasion when your recollection of a particular memory became less accurate because of post-event information. What were the contributing factors?
  • In what ways has the explosion of technology and media/social media contributed to how the misinformation effect has become more prevalent in today’s world?
  • Suggestibility (the influence of others’ expectations on our memory) and misattribution (information attributed to an incorrect source) raise several ethical concerns. What are some that you can think of?

Statement of your position and supporting Argumentation;

The Final Project is a 1500 word (1,500 words is 3 pages single spaced, 6 pages double spaced) critical persuasive essay. Provide a cover page and a works cited page. Double space and size 12 New Times Roman font.

argue for or against the propositions within that specific topic, presenting sound reasoning, evidence, and analyses. Your presentation should be well-written, grammatically correct, and well-reasoned.

1Topic:Recently, many people have been attracted to the idea of living simply. That is, they want to reduce unnecessary household expenses and purchases of “stuff” they don’t really need. Some of this philosophy is inspired by the idea that wealth and possessions don’t really bring happiness and that one’s financial resources must be saved, in order to provide for later in life. Rather than possessions, one’s having “quality” time to relax, think, and spend with family and friends is more important than constant trips to the mall to buy more “stuff.”

However, there are consequences to spending less, especially in an economy like ours, where consumerism accounts for 70% of our economic activity. If people stop buying or even just cut down, other people, perhaps including themselves, will lose jobs. There are also the re-used products markets, which can cut into new demand for new production and services. Self-sufficiency also can play in, since whatever we are doing for ourselves, we do not have to spend for someone else to do those tasks for us.

There is also the consideration that many people closely identify, rightly or wrongly, with their day jobs or professions and derive personal satisfaction and/or self-esteem from the status attached to those jobs, occupations, or professions and from the quality of work that they do. They feel that they deserve the wages they make and that there’s nothing wrong with spending that money any way they want to. So there are both individual and larger socio-economic factors here. Where do you come down on these issues. Defend your position logically and with as much evidence as you can find.

The Final Project must follow this structure:

•   Introduction of the Topic and your position (Topic Paragraph);

•   Statement of your position and supporting Argumentation;

•   Statement and development of at least one substantive objection to your position;

•   Rebuttal of the objection;

Conclusion indicating what you have argued and demonstrated.

Discussion Comments

Use the following discusssion post and write a reply to it. Discuss Code words, 3 references, 2 page.   Include any references to proper Coding in Qualitative Research.  Minimize first person talk (I). Most important discuss their use of code words.

Video Name

The name of the video that was selected for this discussion post was titled, “Bringing the Natural World to Hong Kong” (Topper, 2014). A doctoral student at Walden University, Christine Topper, created the video to highlight the need for children to have regular opportunities to experience nature. Focused on the Hong Kong region, Topper (2014) states that many children in her area suffer from nature deficit disorder because of the level of industrialism that makes up her community. By creating accessible micro-gardens, children will be able to live a more active childhood, learn more about where their food comes from, and get regular exposure to nature (Topper, 2014).

Code words

According to Saldaña (2016), a code in qualitative research can be defined as a word or phrase that summarizes the primary meaning of a piece of data. Within Topper’s (2014) video, a few codes became prominent. The first code was ‘disconnection’, which described the experience of being disconnected from nature. “As such our student body does not have much exposure outside of the home and has developed a disconnection from the natural world” (Topper, 2014), and “High rise buildings are taking over the natural green spaces where children usually play and media technology is keeping people indoors and changing the lifestyle of society from active to sedentary” (Topper, 2014), are two quotes from the video that support the notion that there is a theme of disconnection from nature in the author’s testimony. Another prominent code is ‘adaptive’, which describes what it was like to successfully come up with a working solution to the problem of nature deficit disorder in Hong Kong. The two quotes that support this are the following: “Building on the rooftop greening project an early childhood teacher and myself started a sustainable micro-garden for the kindergarten students in the outdoor play space” (Topper, 2014), and “And we are collaborating with local organizations to create more green spaces in schools around Hong Hong” (Topper, 2014).

Discuss

The process that was followed to code the experiences mentioned above was similar to the process as detailed by Dr. Susan Marcus in the Laureate Education Inc. (2016) video. First, the transcript from Topper’s (2014) video was assigned line numbers for reference in the manually coded spreadsheet. Then the transcript was reviewed for sentences or phrases that had meaning. These pieces of data were then copied over to the spreadsheet, and were assigned an experiential code that described the meaning. Eventually, themes became prominent, and different pieces of data were coded similarly if they shared a similar meaning.

Reflection/Questions (discuss any insights or ask questions regarding this process)

Initially, I was unsure how to code the transcript for the videos because there was only one person speaking versus two people having a conversation as illustrated in the Laureate Education Inc. (2016) media resource. After working through the process, I believe that things got a little easier, and I was able to identify overarching themes in what the video’s speaker was saying. Through further practice, I believe that this process will become even more streamlined.
