Fate

Fate: The burning of Troy is symbolic of the destruction of an entire nation and culture. In Books 2, we see Troy fall to the Greeks, but there are numerous examples of omens that fortell that Aeneas and his son will eventually found Rome. Of course, Aeneas is reluctant to leave the burning city, and his father, Anchises, is reluctant to leave with him. Find an example in Books 2-3 where there is a tension between leaving the old behind and embracing what is new. How do the characters struggle with their own will, what they desire, and fate or the will of the gods.

Violence

Explore in 350 words:
Violence: In Book 1, Jupiter prophesies from heaven that Aeneas will found Rome and “wars will cease and cruel history will grow gentle” (line 291). Yet, even though The Aeneid is supposedly about the “peace” that Rome will eventually bring the world (Pax Romana – Wikipedia ) by subduing the world to Roman law and government. This is parallelled in a description in Book 1 of Dido’s African Kingdom of Carthage: Jove let you found a city and bring justice – / To lawless tribes” (524). The book is frought with violence everwhere. How does The Aeneid in Books 2-3, depict violence? Does the violence that it depicts seem like a glorified violence? Or can you detect Jupiter’s prophecy that there will be peace eventually? Does it matter that the violence in Book 2 is primarily done by Greeks? Who inspires the violence? What does it mean?

Fathers and Mothers

Explore in 350 words:
Fathers and Mothers: We get a lot of interesting depictions of fathers and mothers and sons in these two Books. In Book 2, we have Priam, King of Troy, watch his son Polites get murdered (525-530). We also have a lot of interesting interactions between Aeneas and his father (he saves his father but not his wife Creusa). Venus, who is Aeneas’s mother, appears to him and leads him out of Troy. Also, in Book 3, the Trojan’s are supposed to find their “mother land” or their “primeval mother”, which Anchises seems to think is in Crete, though he gets it wrong because he forgets to listen to the female prophetess Cassandra (170-185). There is also the grief of Andromache, who remembers her slaughterd son Astyanax when looking at Aenaes’s son Ascansius in Book 3 (339). Choose one passage dealing with either father-son, mother-son, relationships, and explain how these relationships shapes the narrative of the poem.
