Identify the type of pathogen and its particular characteristics

Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases Principles of Public Health Microbiology, pp. 315-341 5-1 Discussion: Transmission of Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases 5-2 Final Project Milestone   Identify a vector-borne or zoonotic disease that you feel has a large, negative impact on the health of the community. Strategic Analysis I – Pathogen Characteristics

In Module Five, you will submit the Strategic Analysis I Paper, analyzing the characteristics of the pathogen in your selected case study. Reference the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric to see how this paper will eventually fit into your final project. You are encouraged to incorporate the feedback you get on this paper before starting the next Milestone rather than waiting until the final project is due. Prompt: Submit a paper describing the characteristics of the pathogen in your case study. Be sure to include the following critical elements:

· Identify the type of pathogen and its particular characteristics, justifying your identification. How did you identify the type of pathogen?

· Describe the ecological principles of the pathogen and how these principles affect the likelihood of control.

· Describe how the pathogen negatively impacts the health of the community. How is the pathogen transmitted and how is this related to the pathogen’s composition?

· Differentiate between how biological, chemical, and physical agents affect human health. What specific characteristics exist for the different agents?

· Assess how mitigation strategies differ between biological, chemical, and physical agents, and explain why. How do the specific characteristics of the agents inform the mitigation strategies? Provide examples related to your specific biologic agent.

· As this is a biological agent, describe the specific precautions or strategies that must be taken into account in mitigating this specific agent. What special precautions must be considered when attempting to mitigate biologic agents? Guidelines for Submission: Submit assignment as a Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Your paper must be 3–4-pages with at least three sources cited in APA format.

Create four maps using social explorer

Lab 10 – Due by the Start of Class on Thursday April 11th

You will create 4 maps and then write a page description mini-paper about each map. You will submit four maps and about 4 pages of writing.

Task 1: Create four maps using social explorer (you learned how to use social explorer in lab 9).

Question: What geographic area can I pick?

Answer: Here are your choices

a) The national scale at the State level

b) Any state of your choice at the County Level

c) Any city of your choice at the Census Tract Level

d) Any smaller part of the city at the Block Group Level

e)

Question: What data should I map?

Answer: Please choose any four varaibles

Question: What should the vizualization type be?

Answer: Whatever looks best/apporpriate for the data you chose

Question: What should be included on the map?

Answer: Please export the map at an apporpiate scale for the geographic phenomena you are looking at. (For example if you are studying Philadelphia – make sure the map shows all of Philadelphia)

Please pick the number classes/breaks/cutpoints other than default. (Please justify why you chose them)

Change the color from default

Don’t be afraid to play around with the options availiable to you to make your map more interesting.

Task 2: Write About the Maps

Question: What is the structure of the paper?

Answer: 4 -8 pages = the analysis of 4 maps. Each map gets a 1-2 pages. Please include your maps at the end of the paper in an appendix. You should write about a page about each map. Please clearly indicate at the top of each page which map you are analyzing. Don’t go overboard, but make sure to answer all of the prompts I provide for you below.

Question: What should be included in the analysis for each map

Answer: (For each map you should answer the following questions)…

1. What decisions did you make on this map. For example, the color you chose, the classes, the scale (units) you chose – anything else you clicked on the map – explain what you clicked/did and why? Please be as detailed as possible.

2. What is the data variable you chose? What does it measure? How is it measured? Please refer here or somewhere else to answer these questions

3. What geographic pattern does the map show? For example, if you chose unemployment, is it concentrated in one part of the city(state, country etc)? What is the name of the neighborhood (county, state etc) it’s located in? Does it surprise you?

4. Why do you think this pattern is appearing? Please do some research and write a few sentences about it.

5. What is a limitation of the data you used? What could be flaw in let’s say, measuring poverty using the unemployment rate, or using the category ‘Latino’ to measure race. You may have to do some research about how the category is being measured and what it means.

Task 3: Write a One Paragraph Conclusion

Question: Shouldn’t I say something about all of the maps.

Answer: Yes – you should. Please write a conclusion paragraph comparing all the maps on a final 5th page.

Poverty And Tropical Disease

Week 10 Assignment

Poverty and Tropical Disease

Onchocerciasis

Sustainable Development Goal 1 aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. Eradicating poverty in all its forms remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Globally, more than 800 million people are still living on less than $1.25 a day; many lack access to adequate food, clean drinking water, and sanitation. While Sustainable Development Goal 3.3 aims to by 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases.

In this assignment, you will examine the relationship between Onchocerciasis and economic level in two countries from different geographic areas. You will examine the level of poverty—GDP (gross domestic product) and GNI (gross national income)— per capita for these two countries. You will compare and contrast the incidence and trend of the disease in each of these countries in relation to the observed economic level. For this assignment, you will study the following countries:

1- Benin

2- Brazil

To prepare:

1- Review WHO | Onchocerciasis. (n.d.). from WHO website: http://www.who.int/gho/neglected_diseases/onchocerciasis/en/ then review GHO | By category | Estimated number of individuals in the country requiring preventive chemotherapy for onchocerciasis – Data by country. (n.d.), from WHO website: http://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.main.NTDONCHEMO?lang=en

2- Go to Poverty and Equity | DataBank. (n.d.). Retrieved April 29, 2019, from https://databank.worldbank.org/data/POVHP1/id/d5ca92c0 and Explore Poverty and Equity Data by country for these two countries

3- Review the WHO | Progress report on the elimination of human onchocerciasis, 2017–2018. (n.d.). from WHO website: http://www.who.int/onchocerciasis/resources/who_wer9347/en/

To Complete:

Your paper (5-6 pages not including title and references) must include:

  • A title page, in APA format.
  • Section headers, in APA format, for each section below:
    • Compare and contrast the most appropriate relevant and current data on prevalence and trend of the Malaria or NTD in the provided countries. You are encouraged to use creativity to present these data graphically.
    • Describe the poverty level in these countries as they relate to this scenario, giving examples from the data sources.
    • Explain how the incidence of Malaria/NGD for each country might be related to the different poverty indicators level observed. Be sure to support your answer and cite your sources
    • Identify interventions or efforts that could be in place in these countries (governmental or non-governmental) that are aiming to achieve SDG 1 and SDG 3.3

Initiative 3 – Risk Management

Initiative 3 – Risk Management

Risk Management is defined as the identification and analysis of exposure to hazards, selection of appropriate risk management techniques to handle exposures, implementation of chosen techniques, and monitoring of results, with respect to the health and safety of members.  There is no question that firefighters are expected to work in dangerous environments but most risks and dangers are well known.  What we have to do is be able to function safely in these environments by implementing risk management controls.  The 3rd Initiative asks us to function safely in high-risk environments by implementing risk management controls wherever they can help reduce injuries and line-of-duty deaths.

After reading the required weekly readings, and reviewing the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives section regarding Risk Management on the website Everyone Goes Home, write a post that achieves the following:

1. Why is risk management an important component of incident management?

2. Please read the Case Study below and answer the following questions:

Case Study:  You respond on Engine 265 to a house on fire and arrive just as the picture windows break out, spreading fire to the front porch.  Your lieutenant tells you to pull the attack line while he completes a 360 of the home.  As you pull the hose line, a neighbor grabs your arm and pleads with you to go get the family that is still inside.

A. How does risk management factor into this incident?

B. Is the hose line essential to rescuing the family?

C. How can the stress of the incident affect your decision making?

Initiative 4 – Empowerment

It is well known that some incidents exceed the capabilities of first arriving units, but safe actions build the foundation for effective actions and, ultimately, a positive incident outcome.  Unfortunately, some aspects of our tradition tend to build the foundation for unsafe practices.  Our goal is to have every member fully engaged during an emergency incident with a focus on doing the work in a proficient manner and looking out for one another to avoid injuries and potential line of duty deaths.  The 4th Initiative states that all firefighters must be empowered to stop unsafe practices.

After reading the required weekly readings, and reviewing the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives section regarding Empowerment on the website Everyone Goes Home, write a post that achieves the following:

1. Explain empowerment and how it relates to the fire ground.
2. Please read the case study below and answer the following questions:

Case Study:  As you advance the attack line from Engine 265 ahead of your lieutenant, you pause at the front steps of the porch to knock down the flames that are venting from the front windows.  Suddenly, boards from the ceiling of the porch drop in front of you.  You stop your forward movement, fearful that the entire porch is beginning to collapse.  Your lieutenant continues to push you forward and yells that you need to make entry into the home.

A. How do you know if the front porch is going to collapse on you?
B. Is the lieutenant aware of what just happened?
C. How would you address your concerns to the lieutenant?

Initial Post:  Your initial post must be a minimum of 300 words and should fully use the materials that have been provided to you in order to support your response.
