The Final Paper should incorporate student research, assigned readings, class discussions, and personal experience.

Environmental Issues

  • Choice Two –Is global warming due to human actions?  Can the human race take action to stop global warming?

Computers Are Part Of Our Everyday Lives.

Computers are part of our everyday lives. You are likely reading this assignment on a computer screen right now; you may have a smart phone sitting on your desk, and maybe you just came back from a business trip during which you made airline and hotel reservations online. Over the last several years, you may have noticed that computers are able to store more information and process that information more quickly. New research into the electron spin of atoms hints at a new computer revolution in the near future.

Assignment

For this project, you will be exploring the developments in material science that have allowed computers to become so fast. To do so, please address the following in 3–4 pages, not including title and reference pages:

  • What are the 3 essential properties of every material?
  • New materials often lead to new technologies that change society. Describe how silicon-based semiconductors revolutionized computing.
  • What are microchips? How are they related to integrated circuits?
  • One of the pressing questions about the increasing ability of computers to quickly process large amounts of information is whether a computer can be built that is considered “alive” or “conscious.” What is artificial intelligence? What are 2 essential differences between human brains and the central processing unit of a computer?

Prostitution Is Exploitation

Some argue that all prostitution is exploitation and does not constitute as work. Others do not think women are being victimized, but rather see them as agents constructing their own sexuality, which can be liberating. Which position do you support (or you could argue for elements of each side of the argument) and why? Use the Kelly book to support your ideas.

This paper must be 2-3 pages long, double-spaced using examples ONLY from the book “Lydia’s Open Door” by Patty Kelly. Ideas generated from class include:

Exploitive:
1. obgladas are forced to have sex
2. workers report to pimps
3. The zone is a service aimed at men. Women are objectified by them.
4. Mexican government use the workers to promote a false sense of what they are doing.
5. The workers’ identity as a sex worker cannot be shaken. They will be recognized as a sex worker by clients in public

Non-exploitive:
1. Sex work is work, the workers negotiate own prices and the work is physical
2. It is not a desireable job
3. Workers set own hours, can refuse clients, and set own rules and prices
4. The workers can charge for extra services
5. You can compare the career as running a business. you must report to work to earn money
6. The workers go against norms by being sexually devious such as performing oral and anal sex, and not only missionary.
