Evaluating Credible and Scholarly Scientific Sources

Evaluating Credible and Scholarly Scientific Sources

The purpose of this assignment is to help you distinguish between different types of information sources and evaluate sources of information for credibility. Scientists and scholars use information from a variety of sources, some of them scholarly journal articles that have been peer-reviewed, and others credible websites, magazines, and news sources.  While all scholarly sources are considered credible, most credible sources you will encounter in your daily life are not actually scholarly.  It is important to view information with a critical eye, as there is a lot of misinformation from bunk sources out there.  If you do not believe this, just navigate to Google in your Internet browser, type in the words, “We never went to the Moon”, and see what you find.  Did you know that the Moon may be made of cheese?  Exactly what kind, however, remains a mystery (Uncyclopedia.wikia.com, 2016).

In order to complete this assignment, you will need to follow the links provided on the Week Two Assignment Reporting Form to view three numbered sources.  For each source, complete a two-page questionnaire.  When you have finished, you will have identified which of three sources is not credible, which sources are credible, and which source is also scholarly.

Once you have completed the required sections within the Week Two Assignment Reporting Form submit the document via Waypoint. The document does not need to include a title page or other APA formatting; however, if you utilize any outside sources in your answers, you must reference these sources in proper APA format.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

political biography

You will be writing a 600-700 word political biography of your state representative (Make sure you choose your state rep and not your state senator or your Congress person.). If you are not from Connecticut, you can choose to write about the person who represents West Haven/ UNH or the person from your home state district.

This is a mini research paper on your state representative which means you should have 2-3 sources and a works cited page. Your paper must include citations either due to paraphrasing or directly quoting information about your rep. Please avoid using long quotes. You should not simply be copying and pasting information.

This assignment is due on Blackboard by 11:59PM on Sunday, 26 March 2017.

Your political biography will include the following:

1.    An introduction of your state representative. Who is this person? What is their party affiliation? How long has he/she been in office? What town(s)/ city(ies) does he/she represent (include the district number).

2.    A brief discussion of your representative’s upbringing: where born, marriage, family, education, events growing up that may have influenced his/ her decision to enter politics (This should be no more than one paragraph).

3.    A description of the district that he/ she represents. How many people are in the district? What are the biggest issues facing this particular district?

4.    What is your representative’s political affiliation? What does his/her political ideology seem to be (strong conservative, moderate conservative, strong liberal, moderate liberal, libertarian, etc.). What issues does your representative support or oppose? Are there any specific issues that he/she has been particularly outspoken about? Cite any bills your representative has introduced or gotten passed related to some of the bigger political issues facing state governments today.
