Writing Assignment 4 Procedural Message

Background: Writing and Distributing a Set of Instructions

You have just been promoted from staff assistant in the Human Resources Office at Easy to Be Green to the new position of director of training, and your first project is to oversee the new reading, writing, and math courses. Recently, though, several department heads have complained that many employees do not know how to prepare and deliver presentations. You have begun to put together a short course on this, but the course will not be offered for a couple of months and only a small percentage of employees will be able to take it the first time anyway.

You decide that, in the meantime, you will create an instructions document that can be sent to all employees immediately. For some employees, who just need a refresher, this document will probably be enough. For others, it will be an interim solution until they are able to take the course.

Assignment

1. Drawing on ideas from the discussions and practice assignments as well as your own experiences in preparing and delivering presentations, compose a set of instructions on how to prepare and deliver an oral presentation to a live audience, that is, not for a presentation to be recorded for download. Follow these guidelines in writing your instructions.

• Write the instructions in your own words, though of course you should draw on ideas and information that you have read and discussed for this course. If you do consult any sources apart from those used in the course, include citations throughout the document, placing quotation marks around exact language taken from a source, and include a References page at the end.

• Use headings and bulleted or numbered lists to make the instructions as reader-friendly as possible. You may also use features like color or font changes if you think these would enhance the visual effectiveness. If you do decide to use such features, make sure that they enhance rather than simply clutter the document.

• Use at least two different types of visuals. For example a reproduction of a PowerPoint slide to illustrate how to create reader-friendly slides; a picture to illustrate a point about body language in presentations; a diagram to illustrate where to stand in relation to a slide projector and screen; or a screenshot to show one of the steps. Visuals should be integrated into the instructions, ideally through references in one or more steps of the instructions. For this purpose, you can label the visuals as Figure A and Figure B.

• Remember that the instructions should include preparing as well as delivering the presentation, so they might include a timeline explaining the stages of preparation. Feel free to imagine a particular topic if this will help you write this part of the instructions.

2. Compose an email message that can be sent to all employees with these instructions as a document attachment. Your email message should serve as a brief transmittal message explaining the attachment. For purposes of submitting this assignment, the email message should be composed on a separate page at the beginning of the Word document that contains the instructions.

3. Post the assignment in the Week 7 Procedural Message dropbox no later than midnight Sunday. Note that there should be only one document, which will contain the email transmittal message and the instructions.

Choose A Controversial Issue.

Choose a controversial issue. For the purposes of this assignment, it is best if you do not feel strongly about the issue because you need to be objective about the good reasons for both sides.

Write your issue in question form, so you can clearly see the pro and con sides of the issues by answering yes or no to the question. For example, you might write “Does secondhand smoke cause cancer?” Those who answer yes are on the pro side of this issue; those who say no are on the con side.

Conduct research using the Virtual Library and/or the Internet and find eight sources. Four should be pro and four should be con. Following this, study the research you compiled and choose three reasons for supporting the pro side of the issue and three reasons for supporting the con side. Discuss the reasons for each side, using evidence to support each reason.

Finally, take a position on the issue and state why you found the reasons for that position to be more credible. Acknowledge the strengths of the other side and also explain why you found your chosen side’s position to be stronger. In addition, comment on what you learned in the process of studying both sides of an issue.

Biomes And Diversity

Biomes and Diversity

As you have learned in the readings, extinction is a natural selection process. You have also read that humans are often responsible for accelerating this process. Using at least two scholarly or reputable resources and your textbook, address whether or not we as humans should be concerned with the extinction rate. Additionally, discuss whether or not humans should strive to preserve representative samples of all biomes on the planet. Before beginning your discussion, watch the video “ How to find scholarly articles ,” which defines the difference between scholarly, reputable, and non-reputable resources. Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. Utilize at least two scholarly or reputable resources and your textbook to support your claims. Cite your sources in APA

Piracy And The Law Of The Sea

Answer one of the following questions below in a minimum of 300 words in apa format with at least 2 references and they must be cited in the paper

1) Given the current situation in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea please describe how you think the International Community should secure the shipping lanes and where the assets to do so would be stationed or suggest alternative routes that could be used instead of this critical seaway for world commerce (check a map to construct your answer). Also what is the best way to handle the situation? Should navies continue to patrol the area or should shipping companies hire private armed security? What are the pro’s and con’s of of each? Please read the article attached at the bottom of this posting about the pirates. Also please watch this videoclip about anti-pirate operations:

(2)Do you think the U.S. should ratify the 1982 Draft Convention on the Law of the Sea? Also remember your answer and references when you answer one of the essay questions about treasure salvaging for Week 3. State your reasoning.
By the way I could not download the entire UNCLOS Treaty into the course materials folder (it’s too big a document. It was written by lawyers go figure). So the best thing is to find an article about why the US didn’t sign it and work from there.
