In week 2, you learned about the various ways in which we are made aware of crime and the different strengths and weaknesses of each of these methods of gathering crime statistics. You have also learned about how crime is defined can impact the overall perception and knowledge of crime.

Directions: With the readings from week 1 and 2 in mind, answer each of the following questions. Be sure to fully answer each part of every question.

1. Discuss the different views (I.e., interactionist, consensus, conflict) that influence how crime is defined. Which do you think is the best definition and why? Your “why” should be supported with facts.

2. Discuss two strengths and two weaknesses of each of the various measures of crime. Which method do you think is best and why?

3. Discuss two ways in which you think we can lessen the dark figure of crime.

4. Based on your answers to questions 1-3, propose a new way in which you think crime data should be collected. * note- this question involves critical thinking and should be your unique idea. You should, however, use course material to back up your thoughts.

Now that you’ve reviewed the resources about the court system, you are familiar with the four purposes of punishment: deterrence, incapacitation, retribution, and rehabilitation. In this 350- to 500-word journal entry, address the following:

  • Explain where capital punishment fits into your prioritization.

Read the following scenarios and answer each prompt.

Communication and Collaboration The branches of criminal justice may appear to function autonomously, but there is a lot of interaction and collaboration between them. In this part of the career investigation, you will need to think about some scenarios where communication and collaboration would be required for these branches to function effectively and which branch appears to be more in line with how you approach communication and collaboration.

a) How does the ability to conduct legal searches differ between the police officer, probation officer, and prison guard in the performance of their duties? Give an example of interagency collaboration when conducting a legal search.

b) A police officer was conducting an investigation involving an incarcerated prisoner. The police officer would like to know who the prisoner spoke to on the phone and who visited him. Describe who the police officer would need to collaborate with to obtain that information, explaining why.

c) Lou, a suspect the officer was investigating in a burglary case, was just convicted for that crime. Prior to his sentence, a pre-sentence report must be conducted. Who is most likely to conduct the investigation: the police officer, probation officer, or the prison guard? Who will he or she collaborate with to complete the report? Support your response by explaining how this process impacts interagency collaboration.

d) Select one court case where communication and collaboration were driving factors, and discuss the impact of that case in reshaping the role of the corrections practitioner.
