An Impact Evaluation of Life Saving Efforts under the Border Safety Initiative.

Applied Research Methods – Research Critique

The purpose of this course is to make you informed consumers of research and over the

semester you have gained knowledge of the components of research that will assist you in

this final assignment. The research critique consists of reading three research studies and

answering several questions about each. All three studies have been provided for you.

The studies selected for the critique are as follows:

Article 1:

Guerette, Rob T. (2007). “Immigration Policy, Border Security and Migrant Deaths: An

Impact Evaluation of Life Saving Efforts under the Border Safety Initiative.”

Criminology & Public Policy, 6(2): 201-222.

Article 2:

Kovandzic, T., Sloan, J., and Vieraitis, L. (2004. “’Striking Out’ as Crime Reduction

Policy: The Impact of ‘Three Strikes’ Laws on Crime Rates in U.S. Cities.”

Justice Quarterly, 21(2): 207-239.

Article 3:

D’Alessio, S; Stolzenberg, L., and Terry, W. Clinton III (1999). “Eyes on the Street”:

The Impact of Tennessee’s Emergency Cellular Telephone Program on Alcohol-

related Fatal Crashes.” Crime and Delinquency, 45(4): 453- 466.

For each of these research articles perform the following:

1. Identify the research design used.

2. Specify the type of data used to conduct the analysis.

3. Identify the sampling procedure employed.

4. Specify the dependent variable of the study.

5. Present the key findings of the study.

6. Identify at least 3 limitations of the study (e.g. threats to validity, reliability, etc.) and explain each.

Provide separate answer sheets for each article and identify your responses to the specific

question above that you are answering. Your responses should be typed, 12 point font,

and single spaced. Your answers are due on the last day of the week that the final exam is

scheduled). Be sure to explain each of your answers fully. You should strive to be as

comprehensive in your answers as possible as if you were explaining your answers to a

lay person who knows nothing about research methodology

Maintain a persuasive tone by summarizing observations and evaluations for each slid

For this Assignment, create a narrated PowerPoint presentation about the crime trends in your state. In a minimum of 15 PowerPoint slides (excluding the cover and references slides), addresses the following items:

  • Your state’s homicide numbers from the UCR (which will include not only homicide but non negligent manslaughter) from 1990-2015 (past 25 years)
  • The rates for those years
  • Are the rates going up or down? That is, what are the trends?
  • How does your state’s rate compare with the national rate?
  • What are the causes/patterns of homicide in your state?

PowerPoint Format:

  • Use the slide notes section in the presentation to include information that follows your narration, being sure to follow the conventions of Standard English.
  • Slide content should include brief points that identify the areas that will be addressed in the narration.
  • In-text citations should be included with any brief points that were researched from outside sources and the narration should fully explain the points
  • Cite all sources on a separate reference slide at the end of the PowerPoint and reference each source in the body of the presentation using APA format.
  • Identify the source of any pictures you use, being sure to cite them correctly in APA style using in-text citations.

Narration Guidelines:

  • Maintain a persuasive tone by summarizing observations and evaluations for each slide.
  • Ensure that your presentation is highly ordered, logical, and unified.
  • Words should be clearly enunciated and professional tone should be sustained throughout the presentation narration.
  • Audio recording should be free of background noise and interruptions.

Discuss the effect you feel the presence of the active armed guards

The history of correctional institutions is well documented.  Correctional institutions (jails and prisons) house individuals who are  awaiting trial and serving both short- and long-term sentences.  Correctional officers are responsible for the monitoring, treatment, and  supervision of individuals who have been found guilty by a court of  law.

For this assignment, we will take you inside a look at the “Most  Violent Prison 2016 – Part 1 – Maximum Security” (video source: https://youtu.be/XGyxXGJWA2I).

  1. Describe the main methods Sergeant Baldwin and his staff use to  maintain order and safety in the prison. Take a position on the  effectiveness, risks, pros and cons, and ethics of these methods.
  2. Choose one (1) of the inmates profiled in this video–Terry  Dibble, Simkayta Winfield, Jerico Jones, or Gregory Crowder–and discuss  their situation. Explain how they ended up at Statefield, the main  issues they described facing, and the methods they use to cope with  their time in prison.
  3. Discuss the effect you feel the presence of the active armed  guards has on the violence level and overall safety within this prison.
  4. Describe the issue of isolation in Statesville presented in  this video and the effects connections and contact with outside visitors  can have on the prisoners’ mental status.
  5. Identify at least two (2) issues that gay inmates here uniquely  face. Identify at least one (1) method of protecting gay inmates  against each of these identified issues.
  6. Take a position on how you believe conditions at Statefield  could be improved. Include at least two (2) specific actions that could  be taken to improve conditions (e.g., security and safety, abuse and use  of force, isolation, poor food quality, etc.). Provide a rationale for  your position.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Summarize the current ethical issues faced by criminal justice professionals and the future of the criminal justice system.
  • Outline the major characteristics and purposes of prisons, including prisoners’ rights and prison society.

Scenario PowerPoint Presentation Instructions

Textbook-Terrill, R. J. (2016). World criminal justice systems: A comparative survey(9th ed.). New York, NY: Routledge. ISBN: 9780323356466.

This assignment will be very similar to the Mini-Scenario Research Paper Project.  However, it is our desire that not only do you become a great researcher, you become an “expert of the presentation.”  When you earn your PhD you may find yourself in a teaching role.  In fact, maybe you will be teaching Comparative Criminal Justice Systems!  This series of PowerPoint presentations will be a great start in your class preparation.

In this assignment you will find yourself in various countries as a criminal! In the scenario and analysis you create you will truly be an international criminal.  The “crime” committed can be of your choosing is long as it is illegal in the country we are studying.  You will find that this very deep dive into the criminal justice systems of each country we study will help you become a world criminal justice system expert.

The following is your prompt for the setting of your PowerPoint Presentation:

1) You are a US Citizen that is travelling to the country we are studying

2) You arrive at the country

3) You commit a crime

a. Make the crime interesting enough to write about

b. Make the crime of a nature that you will work through the country’s criminal justice system

c. Do not get caught up in the detail of the crime at the expense of the analysis – this will lead to failure of the assignment!

4) You are caught by the country’s law enforcement officers

5) You do not have diplomatic immunity and the country is balking at any means of negotiation with the US for your release from the crime and subsequent punishment

The following is an outline of what you should cover in your presentation:

1) Begin your presentation with a brief analysis of the following elements:

a. Country analysis

i.  Introduction to the country

ii.  People and society of the country

iii.  Economy

iv.  Transnational issues (if applicable) that may impact law enforcement

v.  Relations with the United States

b. What is the basic government structure and its relationship to the criminal justice system

c. What is the “legal family” or basis of law in the country

d. What are the major components of the criminal justice system in the country

1) Please explain the following elements:

a. What crime did you commit? How were you caught? In other words, briefly set up the scenario.

b. Explain the country specific law

c. Explain from first contact through arrest and questioning your experience with the country’s law enforcement officials

d. Explain the detention process you will experience as a foreign national for the crime you committed

e. Explain the judicial process you’ll experience for the crime you committed

f. Explain the detention, corrections, and/or incarceration process you’ll experience for the crime you committed

1) Provide an analysis on:

a. The effectiveness of the criminal justice system in the country

b. The human rights perspective of how you were treated through the lens of the country where you were caught

c. A Holy Bible comparison/analysis of the criminal justice system of the country where you were caught

***Prepare a 10 to 17 slide PowerPoint Presentation*** Title slide(s) and reference slide(s) do not count toward the slide count.  The vast slide count difference is due to the fact that some countries are quite easy to study and some countries have very limited information.  In some instances there will be a plethora of information and you must use skilled writing to maintain proper slide count.  Please keep in mind that this is a doctoral level presentation.  Your research must go beyond the mere textbook and have a minimum of 8 scholarly sources.  The Holy Bible should be used at least once in the PowerPoint presentation.  Each slide (of the 10 to 17 slides) must have 200 to 350 words of bulleted or paragraph speakers notes (in speaker notes section of the slide build).  The slides should be professional and not cluttered with too many words.  The sources should be reflected in the speaker notes, slides, and “reference section slide”.  Additionally, you, the student, should use animations, transitions, and graphics to reflect PhD level research.  Please review the grading rubric when forming your presentation.  Sources should reflect scholarly work but may include .gov information is there is an author or if the information comes from a valid government research database (think CIA or State Department).
