W2D4 Modern world HIstory Research Assignment

When thinking about the Protestant Reformation, one cannot ignore the influence and role of Martin Luther. However, there were other important religious reformers during this period as well such as Zwingli, Calvin, Farel, Knox, Grebel, Simons, Loyola, Henry VIII, and Elizabeth I. For this assignment, you will conduct research on Martin Luther as well as one other reformer of their choice. For both reformers you must report on the following areas with a minimum of one solid paragraph for each category:

1. Biography/Interesting Information – answer the question: Who were they? 2. Key Actions/Highlights of Their Influence answer the questions: What did they do?

How did they influence religion during their day? What was the response of others toward their views? What was their short term and long term legacy?

3. Religious Differences Overview – how did this reformer’s views compare and contrast to Catholic Church views of the time? Specifically address the role of sacraments, how an individual is saved, the role of the clergy, and the role of the Bible.

The information found in the textbook may be useful and a good place to start, but you will probably need to use additional sources and have the freedom to use any source. Cite all sources, and this information should be included on the bottom of the last page of your research. Any assignments received without citations will receive a zero. Also cite any clip art or pictures used. One page per reformer should be sufficient, and as always, the quality of writing is more important than the length, so ensure thorough and accurate research addresses the three categories. Also, add pictures, clip art, color, etc. Have fun researching and reporting!

History Annotated Webliography 5 Websites Chicago Cited

Topic: Pharaohs as a Political Ruler in Ancient Egypt

Instead of reviewing and analyzing books and articles, this assignment requires students to review websites pertaining to a particular topic. Each website description will follow a similar format as your annotated bibliography. Websites will be evaluated for content, accuracy, bias, relevance, and significance to your chosen topic.

For this assignment, you will search for five websites that are acceptable for use in a college-level history research paper. UMUC library databases (for example JSTOR or other journal databases), Wikipedia, History.com or any other encyclopedia or wiki-type site like about.com are NOT acceptable, sites that require a subscription are additionally NOT acceptable. Write a paragraph for each website (five total approximately 200-250 words each) in which you describe the contents of each website in detail, and why you think the site is acceptable for use in an academic research paper, using the information you collected from your evaluation of the site.

Complete the following for your annotated webliography:

Provide a complete citation (as you would include it in your bibliography) for the site, including the URL and your date of access. Note that the required style for this class is Chicago Manual of Style.

For an example of what elements to include in your citation, go to http://sties.umuc.edu/library/libhow/chicago_examples.cfm and click on Web Sites.  You can also click on the Chicago Style Guide Resources module under the Table of Contents to find examples of how to properly cite websites using the Chicago Manual of Style.

Maritime Exploration

Spain and England were the first two countries to have explorers circumnavigate the globe.  Spain accomplished the first voyage around the world under the leadership of Ferdinand Magellan in 1522.  The English voyage, led by Sir Francis Drake, was completed in 1580 (Drake’s expedition was actually the third to circumnavigate the earth as another Spanish crew had completed the journey in the interim).  This essay assignment provides you with the opportunity to read about and study firsthand accounts of these incredible voyages in an effort to understand the great changes taking place during this period of history.

Task:

To complete this essay assignment, first read the two accounts of these voyages, included below.  They are Ferdinand Magellan’s Voyage Round the World, 1519-1522 and Sir Francis Drake’s Famous Voyage Round The World, 1580.  As you read, take notes on the information and details presented to help you when you compose the essay.

  • Ferdinand Magellan’s Voyage Round the World, 1519-1522
  • Sir Francis Drake’s Famous Voyage Round the World, 1580

After reading both accounts, write an essay comparing and contrasting the experiences of these two explorers and their crews.  Numerous possible topics could be discussed: the challenges they faced on the voyages and how they were overcome, the plants and animals they discovered, the people they encountered and the interactions with them, the role of Christianity in the expeditions, the areas of the world in which they traveled, and many other possible topics.  Focus on discussing features of the voyages that you considered to be most significant for the expedition.  As you present different topics for comparison, be sure to include the perspective of both the Spanish and English crews.

Expectations and Criteria for Success:

You should base your discussion with the information in the Unit 3 course content module as well as the two sources linked above, but outside research is allowed if needed.  Outside research should be supplemental to the two primary sources attached to this essay.  DO NOT use Wikipedia as a source.  As always, be sure to keep track of where you find your information so that you can provide citations in your final essay.  Essays should be typed in 12-point font with a simple, clean font such as Times New Roman. Use 1″ inch margins on all sides and double-space the text. Your essays should each be around 1000 words.

Successful essays should be carefully organized, with strong thesis statements and specific evidentiary support.  In your introduction, introduce both of the empires that you will be discussing and lay out the topic for the essay.  The body of the essay will include the comparison and the contrast of the empires.  Conclude by discussing which of the two empires you think was more effectively established or had a stronger foundation, including the reasons why you reached this conclusion.  Be sure to revise and edit carefully. Click here to review the General Essay Guidelines included in your syllabus.
