Please remember, when you use  direct quotes or paraphrases  from the book you are reviewing you need to put the author’s last name in parenthesis after you close your quotes or finish your paraphrases.  An example of this for this semester could be (Sypeck 97).

Also, make sure you use the 3 Step Approach I gave you on each and every question you answer on the Format Sheet from 1A through 3C.  If you do this appropriately you will be creating good, solid paragraphs for all these questions.  Keep in mind that each individual question is worth 15 Points apiece so be sure you have good answer balance on your Final Draft.

UNIT III ESSAY

Instructions

Rome and Romanization

This assignment gives you the opportunity to practice determining the purpose and function of artifacts in order to create your interpretation of a specific historical development—Romanization.

Discuss the impact of the process of Romanization on the Roman world. Identify at least two examples of cultural structures that were patterned across Roman-conquered cities. Cultural structures can include physical features of Roman-ruled cities, practices, policies, ideas, or any artifact that was used to shape the conquered religions.

Discuss how these structures impacted daily life, which may include politics, economics, or social roles. Describe how and with what intent these events were “memorialized” or used in the cultural arena.

Step 1: Choose two appropriate sources. At least one source must come from the CSU Online Library. The Academic Search Complete and eBook Academic Collection databases in the CSU Online Library would be good places to start your search. If you need additional help with using or locating information in the online library, there are library video tutorials available on the main page of the online library under the heading “Research Guides.” Resources from outside of the library should be credible and peer-reviewed and cannot include Wikipedia, Biography.com, History.com, any type of message board, or other similar encyclopedias.

Step 2: Complete your research. Choose one interesting development that illustrates the main point that you want to make about your chosen physical structures, practices, or ideas. Gather details about your choice. For example, what types of buildings were first introduced in Rome, and why were they purposely replicated in other, smaller cities?

Step 3: Draw conclusions from the details you found, and prepare your thesis. A thesis is prepared after you have completed your research and gathered enough information about the chosen structures. You should sit back to think about what it means to see the influence on culture. Your thesis statement should offer your reader the overall insight into the use and impact of the structure on Roman development.

Use the following guidelines to help decide on your thesis.

· Ask yourself about how the cultural element (idea, practice, or structure) was shaped by its time period and environment.

· Ask yourself how the structure impacted the lives of the people around it, the general public, and the immediately following period in the history of Rome.

· Find the perfect specific example to demonstrate the qualities of the structure you would most like to show.

Step 4: Write your essay. Your essay must be at least 500 words in length. All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA guidelines.

Be sure to consider the following guidelines in your essay.

· The introduction should engage the reader and clearly present the essay’s thesis and summarize the main points that clarify your point of view. The last sentence of the introductory paragraph should be your specific thesis.

· Organization should clearly present points arranged to illustrate your opening thesis. Paragraph order and organization should clearly present points arranged to illustrate your opening thesis rather than to narrate the chronological story.

· Writing should be clear and concise with no spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors.

· The number of sources should meet or exceed any expressed assignment requirements, and the sources should be peer-reviewed or academic in nature. At least one source must be from the CSU Online Library.

· APA guidelines should be used for reference entries and in-text citations.

If you need assistance with writing or formatting your essay, there are additional tutorials and webinars available in the myCSU Student Portal through the Writing Center. All other questions should be directed toward your professor.

Option 3A – Losing the Mandate of Heaven.

Writing Assignment – Option 3A – Losing the Mandate of Heaven.

Under the Zhou the Chinese ruler possessed the “mandate of Heaven,” an impersonal law of nature devoted to universal harmony. The king ruled as a representative of Heaven, and was responsible for governing with compassion and justice. Famines, floods, or social unrest could indicate that the ruler had lost the mandate of Heaven, and thus could be overthrown. The rise and fall of dynasties during this era will be tied to the mandate.

INSTRUCTIONS

• Read the relevant sections of Chapter 10 for your analysis and discussion.

• Identify at least two outside sources to support your discussion. Please keep in mind that Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference.

PREPARE AND SUBMIT

Write a well organized essay a minimum of 700 words, including supporting details from the documents/textbook/other sources, in which you to address the following:

Compare and contrast the Chinese dynasties of this era. Examine and discuss the various possible causes for the loss of the “Mandate of Heaven” from the Han to the Yuan dynasties, and assess the reasons for and impact of the Mongol victory over China. Was it “simply” a matter of better military effectiveness or were societal, economic, and related attitudinal elements influential, if not determinative?

REMINDERS

• Paragraphs in an essay are not numbered. Any questions that are associated with an assigned reading are there to serve as a guide for your discussion.

• Your discussion should incorporate all of the information from the documents and or textbook, and outside sources as one essay.

• Students are required to research and incorporate into their discussions additional sources that relate to the content. Chapters contain documents in sections titled Comparative Essays, Comparative Illustrations, and Opposing Viewpoints, and maps and tables also provide information that can be used to support discussion of your essay topic. Recommendations can be found at the end of textbook chapter in Suggested Reading, in Primary Source documents posted in many of the chapter folders, in the Enrichment Activites folder. Many chapters also have videos relating to the content of that chapter, and can be used as reference material. Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference.

• All statements must be supported, and all sources including your textbook and assigned readings must be cited in the essay, and included in your reference list. Failure to do so constitutes Plagiarism, and the college has strict policies and penalties for failure to comply. Under the Student Writing Resources tab you will find links to sites that review how to format a paper or essay. I recommend that students use APA to format their essay. Since you are not writing a Research paper, you do not have to include an Abstract. Students should ask their instructor which format style they prefer you to use.

• Proofread your work. Make sure that you have looked for all of the spelling and grammatical errors and corrected them, and that you have organized your work into coherent paragraphs.

• Prepare the assignment as a Word Document, double-spaced and using a standard font of 12 points.

• Submit it in the Dropbox as an ATTACHMENT. Any work that is submitted directly into the box will be graded as a 0.

Point Value: 100

Grading Criteria:

• Analysis and discussion. (60%)

• Support of discussion (30%) Organization. (10%)
