PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR GENERATED INFORMATION ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT INSTRUCTIONS

PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR GENERATED INFORMATION ON ECONOMIC

DEVELOPMENT INSTRUCTIONS: OPTION 1

For this assignment option, you will interview 2 individuals who work in a sector of public

administration in a way that they influence community economic development. It would be wise

to interview someone from the same location as your Case Study Project. This will give you a

first-person perspective on some of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats faced by

community developers in this area. Before you begin interviewing the candidate, make sure that

you have 10–15 questions planned out that you want to ask. Each interview must observe a 30-

minute time limit.

Sample Questions:

 How does the local planning process impact economic development?

 What are the strategic approaches you use to economic development?

 How do businesses impact the economic development of this community?

 How do the human resources in this community impact economic development?

 Once you have a strategic development plan, what are the steps for implementation?

 What are the challenges facing leaders of economic development?

 What are the economic strengths of your city/town/etc.?

 What are some of the weaknesses of your economic development plan in your city/town?

 What are the opportunities for economic development within your city/town?

 What threatens the potential for economic development within your city/town?

 What leadership traits are important for someone wanting to go into public

administration/economic development?

The interview can be conducted in person or through videoconferencing (with a tool such as

Skype). Whichever method you choose to use for the interview, be aware that both interviews

must be audio recorded. It is important to test the audio equipment prior to conducting the

interview. You are to embed audio into PowerPoint Online.

Include a brief bio of each interviewee as well as the summary of the logistics for each interview

(time, place, location, and anything else that will help the reader understand the setting).

Note that you must interview an individual directly related with city management and/or

economic development. If you choose to interview an individual not directly related to these

topics, you will have points deducted.

By interviewing individuals who work in the field, you will have the opportunity to become

acquainted with one data collection method while simultaneously increasing your understanding

of this vocational role. Thus, as you look for candidates to interview, it would be helpful for you

to interview individuals in positions similar to what you may desire in the future.

Likewise, the following list gives you some examples of job positions that your candidates may

hold:

 Economic development council,

 Chamber of commerce,

 City manager,

 City council member,

 Director of economic development, or

 Mayor (or assistant/deputy mayor).

Request an interview with your chosen candidates by reading the following information

verbatim:

“I am a graduate student at Liberty University studying public administration and would

like the opportunity to ask you some questions about your position, role, and experience

with community economic development. I would be recording the interview for my

instructor. Would it be alright if we set up a time for this interview?”

“The information gleaned from this interview will only be used to facilitate personal

learning, application, and synthesis of material related to economic development in PADM

530, a graduate course in public administration at Liberty University. The instructor of the

course is the only individual that will be reviewing the audio from this interview.”

Submit your interview audio recordings and bio/summary’s by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of

The cabdriver refused to take her and the child to the hospital  because she had no money. While arguing with the cabdriver on the  sidewalk, she pushed the driver, grabbed his car keys, and drove her  daughter to the hospital.  According to the hospital, there was nothing  wrong with her daughter.  The woman entered a plea of guilty to the  unauthorized use of an automobile.  She has two prior convictions for  misdemeanor shoplifting.  The penalty for being convicted of this crime,  which is an A misdemeanor, is time served, up to 1 year in jail, 3  years probation, community service, treatment and/or a fine.   assignment #3 Also, use the DNA test results below to answer this  questions.     What conclusions can you draw from these results? picture uploaded is from assignment #3

Eyewitness Identification

Eyewitness Identification Assignment Before completing this assignment:

1. Watch the lecture on Eyewitness Identification. 2. Read the article assigned to this topic.

Congratulations! You have been hired by the court to serve as an expert on eyewitness identification! The knowledge you received from Dr. Henderson’s class and the article that you read will be very beneficial while you complete this important job. In most jurisdictions, experts are hired for and paid by either the defense or the prosecution, but in this unique jurisdiction, you have been hired by the court to be a neutral evaluator of the evidence. The court wants to know what was good and what was bad about this eyewitness evidence. Steps:

1. Go to https://www.innocenceproject.org 2. Click on “The Cases” at the top of the page 3. Click on “see all cases” and apply the filter “contributing cause- eyewitness

misidentification” (click box indicating eyewitness misidentification) 4. View the cases and pick one case to analyze

Choose one that contains enough information about the identification that you can evaluate the quality of that identification. It’s okay if you want to search for other resources with more information about the eyewitness testimony in that particular case. However, the case you choose must come from the Innocence Project database. Analysis of the Eyewitness Identification

1. Provide the name of the exoneree. 2. A link to the Innocence Project profile, as well as a link to any additional resources you

used. If you use non-electronic resources, provide a reference for them here. (Note that any outside resource should just be information about the case you choose. You are not required to find outside resources other than the information from the Innocence Project website).

3. A description of the crime of which the person was convicted, including a description of what you know about the estimator variables.

4. A description of the identification procedure, including a description of what you know about the system variables.

Note: make sure identify the estimator and system variables.

Application of Course Material

One key component of this assignment is to make a connection between the eyewitness identification and what you’ve learned about in class. Throughout this assignment, use course

material assigned to analyze the different system and estimator variables that likely influenced the eyewitness’s identification accuracy and/or confidence in the identification. Make sure to discuss how the presence (or absence) of these factors could have contributed to the mis- identification. That is, use course material to analyze the case.

Grading rubric for the paper: Points Analysis of the eyewitness identification (address questions above) 10 Application of course material- Did you use research about estimator variables and system variables to analyze the identification evidence in this case?

Alternatives To Incarceration

A recent study illustrates that nearly two (2) million juveniles are processed through juvenile courts across the United States each year. Depending on the nature of the crime, juveniles may face detention or incarceration if they are convicted. Given the fact that many courts are reluctant to incarcerate criminal offenders, judges often consider alternatives to incarceration.  The driving force behind these alternatives is to save taxpayer money yet still demand offender accountability and impose sanctions for criminal behavior.

Use the Internet or Strayer databases to research the use of sanctions other than incarceration or detention for juvenile offenders.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Examine the underlying historical and economic reasons behind the quest for alternatives to committing juveniles to detention centers.
  2. Describe three (3) alternatives to incarceration that juvenile courts currently use. Provide examples of such alternatives in practice to support the response.
  3. Discuss the significant societal and individual benefits of imposing sanctions or punishments that do not involve removing an offender from his / her family or community.
  4. Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • This course requires use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Explain how delinquents have been handled throughout history.
