Assignment 2: Video Analyses

Noble cause corruption follows the teleological model of ethics. The approach emphasizes “good ends” and is a product of police officer “overinvestment” in their work. Police officers believe that in foregoing established legal procedures they will more effectively remove criminals from the street and protect the public from harm. Examples of cause corruption include falsifying reports, planting or the fabrication of evidence, and/or exceeding or abusing lawful authority. In doing so, police officers believe that a desirable ends in achieved (Martinelli, 2006).

Compose a 3–5-page essay that examines the merit of the police action. In your essay, please examine and apply concepts from the course that are relevant to the actions demonstrated by the police officers depicted.

Your essay should accomplish the following:

  • Identify whether the behavior is ethical or unethical
    • If ethical, what greater purpose or law enforcement responsibility does it serve to accomplish and why?
    • If the action is unethical, why is unethical and why does it not serve a law enforcement responsibility or tasking?
  • What theory or theories could be applied to either the ethical or unethical action or approach adopted by the police officer(s)?

The completed essay should be a minimum of 3 but no more than 5 pages in length. The essay should examine the action depicted, its merits, and effectively integrate ethical concepts and theory to your analysis. Outside research and APA style are necessary components of the essay.

Interrelationships Of Public Administration Organizations

You have been solicited to conduct a performance evaluation for a public organization that has been corrupted over issues of personnel embezzling funds. Before actually conducting the evaluation, you—the evaluator—need to know certain specifics to conduct a thorough evaluation.

Compose a proposal that describes what type of evaluation will be conducted. In the proposal, explain the type of public organization. Describe some of the main services, products, and activities the organization provides to the public. Describe the size of the problem, who is affected by the problem, how long the problem has been in existence, and how long the evaluation will take. Also, describe what the evaluation will assess with respect to organizational leadership. Finally, what outcomes do you propose the evaluation will help to achieve for the organization?

Describe the issue of isolation in Statesville

The history of correctional institutions is well-documented. Correctional institutions (jails and prisons) house individuals who are awaiting trial, serving both short and long term sentences.  Correctional officers are responsible for the monitoring, treatment and supervision of individuals who have been found guilty by a court of law.

For this assignment, we will take you inside a look at the “2016 Most Violent Prison“. Please review this video now if you haven’t already done so, before beginning Assignment 3.

After reviewing the video, download the Assignment 3 template. Answer the following questions within the template, then upload the completed template to the assignment submission link in Week 10:

  1. Describe the main methods Sergeant Baldwin and his staff use to maintain order and safety in the prison. Take a position on the effectiveness, risks, pros and cons, and ethics of these methods.
  2. Choose one (1) of the inmates profiled in this video – Terry Dibble, Simkayta Winfield, Jerico Jones, or Gregory Crowder – and discuss their situation. Explain how they ended up at Statefield, the main issues they described facing, and the methods they use to cope with their time in prison.
  3. Discuss the effect you feel the presence of the active armed guards has on the violence level and overall safety within this prison.
  4. Describe the issue of isolation in Statesville presented in this video and the effects connections and contact with outside visitors can have on the prisoners’ mental status.
  5. Identify at least two (2) issues that gay inmates here uniquely face. Identify at least one (1) method of protecting gay inmates against each of these identified issues.
  6. Take a position on how you believe conditions at Statefield could be improved. Include at least two (2) specific actions that could be taken to improve conditions (i.e. security and safety, abuse and use of force, isolation, poor food quality, etc.). Provide a rationale for your position.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Outline the major characteristics and purposes of prisons, including prisoners’ rights and prison society.
  • Summarize the current ethical issues faced by criminal justice professionals and the future of the criminal justice system.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in criminal justice.

Comparative Analysis Presentation

Complete an in-depth comparative analysis of two policies developed on an issue. This can be a comparison across state policies on an issue, or a comparison of the evolution of a policy.  Examples include drug policy, capital punishment, and domestic violence.

Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with detailed speaker notes. Use complete sentences, with correct grammar and punctuation, to fully explain each slide as if you were giving an in-person presentation.

Include the following in your presentation:

  • Create a chart or table that compares aspects of each policy side-by-side.
  • Answer the following questions:
    • What is the issue?
    • What are the two policies developed?  Be sure to clearly explain these policies: goal, objectives, and measures.
    • What led to the development of each policy?
    • What is the relationship between implementation, evaluation, and reform? Explain how these affect each policy highlighted.
    • How are they different?  Which is more effective?

Format your presentation consistent with APA guidelines.
