Counseling Suffering Clients

Required Text Books:

Entwistle, D. N. (2015).  Integrative approaches to psychology and Christianity (3rd ed.).  Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock.  ISBN: 9781498223485.

McMinn, M. R. (2011).  Psychology, theology, and spirituality in Christian counseling (Rev. ed.).  Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House.  ISBN: 9780842352529.

In 500 words, consider how to counsel suffering clients: The class lectures, Entwistle, and McMinn text books all discuss the concept of suffering and factors guiding how we counsel those who are suffering.  In fact, a careful reading of the Reading & Study materials indicates numerous concepts and principles that we could apply as we counsel those who are hurting.

  1. Considering the numerous points that were made, make a list of at least 5 concepts (“questions to ask myself as I counsel those who are suffering. . .  “) that you found particularly helpful, insightful, unique, or had not thought about before.  What guidelines would you particularly emphasize as you counsel hurting people?
  2. Then consider this client’s statement: Client: “Dr. Counselor, I have been coming to you now for six weeks.  I am not sure that counseling is working.  I don’t feel any better now than when we started talking.  Why are you not helping to remove this pain that I am feeling?”  If your client expects that you help to remove the suffering, how would you respond, based on what you learned from your study for the week?

Make sure to integrate appropriate concepts from the class sources, and cite correctly, per current APA format.

Client System Role Play Video

Project: Client System Role Play Video

Now that you have completed your role play script, it is time to record your role play. Practicing your social work skills through role plays is an essential part of a social work education. Role plays assist you in identifying the areas where you are strong, as well as the areas where you might need improvement. They also allow you to develop the social work instincts necessary to effectively work with clients.

Role Play Video (3–5 minutes):

Your video role play, which should be based on the script you created in Week 5, should include:

  • A demonstration of the interaction between you as the social worker and the client system you selected that reflects the appropriate step of the GIM and social work practice behaviors, based on the presenting concerns of that client system.
  • A depiction of at least two techniques you selected for implementing the appropriate practice skills for working with your client system.

For this ungraded assignment, record a 2- to 3-minute video introducing yourself to your colleagues. Your video should include:

    • Your name • Your geographic location • A brief description of your educational accomplishments (i.e.,

degrees and schools attended) • A brief description of your employment history • A description of the topic area in which you might specialize

upon graduation (i.e., substance abuse, child welfare, mental health, etc)

Upload your video using the Mashup Tool in the classroom. For instructions on how to upload your video, refer to the Kaltura Media Uploader area on the course navigation menu Submit your video and transcript by Day 3 of Week 1.

Respond by Day 6 to at least two colleagues with a thoughtful question or suggestion.

Note to Students: While this introduction video is an ungraded assignment that will not be calculated into your final grade, it is a required assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to gain familiarity with technology platforms that share media and to learn more about your colleagues. Note to Students: Technology and Students with Disabilities In this course, students in your peer group will likely create videos and/or PowerPoint presentations and, if so, you will be asked to review them. Our goal is to make those materials accessible to everyone, regardless of disability. If you are unable to access those materials, it is the responsibility of students with disabilities to request appropriate accommodations from the Office of Disability Services at your University within the first week of the course start date.

Discussion 2 Generalist Intervention Model Post by Day 4 a brief description of your population of interest and explain how the Generalist Intervention Model might assist you in working with this population given what you have read so far. Support your posts and responses with specific references to the

    Looking Ahead

Week 10 Final Project: Client System Role Play Reflection and Analysis Paper You should begin reviewing the guidelines for the Final Project that is due in Week 10. Your Final Project consists of the following components:

    • A role play script you develop using the template provided that describes the demographics of a client system you select, characteristics of each member of that system, and the presenting concerns. The script should also map your interaction with the client system in a social work session, based on these details and the social work techniques you select. A draft of your script is due in Week 5. The final draft must be included as an appendix in your Reflection and Analysis Paper due in Week 10.

    • A video recording of the session that you capture between the

client system and you as the social worker, based on the script you created in Week 5. The client system you select can be an individual, a family, a couple, a group of colleagues, or members of a community. The video also must show a demonstration of the two social work techniques you would use in working with this client system. Note that since you will need to be the social worker in the video, you may need to recruit a friend or colleague to record the session. Your video is due in Week 9, in order to allow everyone the opportunity to view the videos in preparation for the reflection and analysis component of the Final Project. Note that you also must include a transcript of your role play video.

    • A reflection/analysis paper describing insights you gained and

challenges you experienced while planning and executing your

role play session. Your paper should also include an explanation of the techniques you used and why you used them. Finally, the paper should include a critique of a colleague’s video, offering examples of what your colleague did well and areas where your colleague could improve. This paper is due in Week 10.

For more information regarding your Final Project, please refer to the Final Project Overview document located in this week’s Learning Resources. It is recommended that you download this document for easy reference as you work on this project throughout the course.

Psychological Aspects of Aging

DISCUSSION 1: Psychological Aspects of Aging

Theories of successful aging explain factors that support individuals as they grow old, contributing to their ability to function. Increasing your understanding of factors that support successful aging improves your ability to address the needs of elderly clients and their families.

To prepare for this Discussion, review this week’s media. In addition, select a theory of successful aging to apply to Helen’s case.

Post a Discussion in which you:

o   Explain key life events that have influenced Helen’s relationships. Be sure to substantiate what makes them key in your perspective.

o   Explain how you, as Helen’s social worker, might apply a theory of successful aging to her case. Be sure to provide support for your strategy.

Be sure to support your posts with specific references to the resources. If you are using additional articles, be sure to provide full APA-formatted citations for your references.

Parker Family Episode 2

Program Transcript

HELEN: Ever since my husband died, there’s been no one to talk to. It’s just,

really, no one. And when Stephanie is home, I just feel so alone.

COUNSELOR: What about the day center you go to? Isn’t that helping?

HELEN: I don’t like it. What makes me really feel good, though, is when I go

shopping, buying things. And my kittens. I love my cats. Oh, have you seen

them? I have pictures. Just take a look. Look! These are so cute. My babies.

COUNSELOR: Yes, they’re very cute. And wow, you have a lot of them.

HELEN: Oh, well, it’s their home, too, not just Princess Stephanie’s.

COUNSELOR: The day program you’re attending, are you seeing a

psychiatrist there?

HELEN: Yes. Dr. Lewin.

COUNSELOR: May I ask how that’s going?

HELEN: He says that I’m depressed.

COUNSELOR: In the pictures you showed me, you just talked about the cats, but I also saw all the things you keep around you, the hoarding. I

understand how depressed you been since your husband passed away. How

alone you’ve felt.

[SIGH] But I would like us to try and set up a plan to begin to address the

hoarding. It’s very clear that that’s one of the big issues that’s affecting your

relationship with Stephanie and your life together. Can we try that?

HELEN: I don’t like it when we fight. She’s still my baby, too. Yes, I want to try.

Discussion 2: Cultural Influences of Social Policy

Cultures, regardless of where they are or how long ago they existed, share a few common characteristics. Among these characteristics is a structure to care for their children and to socialize them in the culture. Children are taught, both directly and indirectly, the values of the culture, their role in the culture, and the expectations the culture has for them. Children absorb the rules, dynamics, and values, which they will later pass these on to subsequent generations.

As a social worker, you will deal with families from different cultural backgrounds. Understanding the cultural background of the families you work with will help you to effectively intervene and advocate for policies that support their needs. How prepared are you to identify and advocate for social policies that are just and support families from all cultures?

For this Discussion, review this week’s resources, including the Hernandez Family video case. Consider how cultural considerations might affect child welfare policy. Then, think about what your responsibilities, as a social worker, might be in supporting the Hernandez family in addressing their child welfare needs through the accessibility of services.

·      Post an explanation of how cultural considerations might affect child welfare policy.

·      Then, explain what your responsibilities, as a social worker, might be in supporting the Hernandez family in addressing their child welfare needs through the accessibility of services.
Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Program Transcript

JUAN HERNANDEZ: Do you have any idea how hard it is for us to get to these

classes?

ELENA HERNANDEZ: And there’s only one class a week. We don’t have a

choice when to come.

COUNSELOR: That is why we offer the parenting class at night, to make it

easier for working families to attend.

ELENA HERNANDEZ: That’s fine for some people, but that’s when Juan gets his

overtime. He can’t do both. Every time we come here it costs us. We lose money.

And the way things are, we can’t afford to lose a dime.

COUNSELOR: I understand that missing overtime is having a big impact

on you financially. And I understand what you’re saying about the class only

being offered one night a week. If we could offer it several times a week, that

would probably be more helpful. But in the meantime—

JUAN HERNANDEZ: Look, let’s stop dancing around what’s really wrong here.

We appreciate what you’re doing. You want to help parents do a better job with

their kids. But we’re good parents. We love our kids. Yes, they get punished

when they need to be punished, just Elena and I when we were growing up. But

we don’t hit our boys. We don’t hurt them.

If anything, you hurt them by making us come here when I could be out there

making extra money, money that the family needs. Do you hear me? This class

this, whole policy is the real problem. That’s what needs to change, not us.

Discussion 3: Child Welfare and Family Preservation

An essential aspect of social work practice is the support and preservation of the family unit. Building and empowering strong, resilient families is a focus of social work practice within organizations and communities.

Social work research is an integral aspect of working with families. The research component of social work is essential to providing effective policies, programs, and services to support and empower families.

As a social worker, you need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills required for effectively working with families for child welfare. You also need to interpret and evaluate research findings involving family and child welfare.

For this Discussion,

·      Post an explanation of the role of family preservation in child welfare.

·      Then, explain whether research supports the assumption that foster care is harmful for children, as presented by the cornerstone argument for family preservation. Be sure to include whether you agree with this assumption and why you agree or disagree.

·      Subsequently, identify the gaps in your state foster care system that contribute to the idea that foster care is harmful to children.

·      Then, compare the benefits and shortfalls of permanency planning and family preservation.

·      Finally, provide a description of whether you prefer the permanency or the family preservation approach as a child welfare social worker and why you prefer it.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.
