The “Liquid” Personality & Adiaphora Discussion

required book:  Shiraev, E. & Levy, D. (2017). Cross-cultural psychology: Critical thinking and contemporary applications. (6th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc.

2. For this assignment you will respond to questions based on information discussed in Exercise 11.2 on page 342 of the textbook (You must have the newest edition of the textbook for this chapter). This is an individual only discussion post, therefore there is no small group discussion or summary response for this assignment. The small group discussions were assigned in Week 8.

a. There is a popular view in social science that, in the 21st century, many people find themselves in “liquid times,” where men and women increasingly live without any solid bonds: that is why the term “liquid” is used, suggested by the famous Polish-born thinker, Zygmunt Bauman (Bauman, 2006). He describes how people have moved away from a “solid” culture with established norms, customs, roles, and values to different type of modern “liquid” life. People today have little consistent self-definition because they define themselves in such a variety of ways nationally, sexually and so on. Having no permanent bods, more people associate themselves in whatever way they can manage, in order to engage with others. As a result of these changes, adiaphora has emerged–a permanent attitude of indifference and moral numbness. In a contemporary word of fast food and shallow relationships, where attention is riveted on personal electronic devices when we rarely have time to settle on any issues of importance, people of a liquid culture are becoming increasingly selfish, losing their sensitivity to the plight of others (Bauman & Donskis, 2013).

b. Considering the statements above, In your response you must address all of the criteria below:

1.Definition & Discussion of Concepts: (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to address)

a. Would you agree or disagree that the modern personality type of the individual is “liquid?” Why or why not? Clearly support your response.

b. Make sure to connect and apply information discussed in the textbook chapter.

2. Experiences/Opinions Concepts : (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to address)

a. In your  personal experience, do you find that MORE people around you have little self-definition, defining themselves whichever way they deem convenient? Thoroughly respond to this question. Clearly provide examples AND support your response with information presented in Chapter 11.

b. Do you feel that people around you are becoming increasingly indifferent or detached? If so, how? If not, provide examples which negate or do no support increasing indifference. Thoroughly respond to this question. Clearly support your response with information presented in the Chapter 11.

3. Application of  Concepts : (this criterion should take approximately 1-2 paragraphs to address)

a. . In your opinion, how does the “liquid” personality relate to common societal definitions or stereotypes about “millennials” or the millennial generation broadly. Clearly define and explain all terms, support your response with examples.

  1. APA style in-text citation and reference is required. Students may not use websites, of any kind, as a primary source in their responses. Submissions which do not contain both APA style in-text citation and reference and/or which use websites of any kind as a primary source may receive a zero.
  2. Discussion formatting must be:

PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS: CHAPTER 15 ASSIGNMENT

PART I:

Instructions: Answer the following questions thoroughly in paragraph format (complete sentences).

1. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the DSM differ in various ways. What are some of the differences in these two classification systems?

2. Describe how cognitive theories of the etiology of anxiety disorders differ from learning theories.

3. Discuss the common elements of each of the three disorders covered in this section: obsessive compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and hoarding disorder.

4. List some of the risk factors associated with the development of PTSD following a traumatic event.

5. Describe several of the factors associated with suicide.

6. Why is research following individuals who show prodromal symptoms of schizophrenia so important?

7. Imagine that a child has a genetic vulnerability to antisocial personality disorder. How might this child’s environment shape the likelihood of developing this personality disorder?

PART II:  (10 points)

Instructions: For each case listed below, give a specific diagnosis, then state the general class of disorders to which that disorder belongs (Ex: anxiety disorder, mood disorder, personality disorder, etc.).

1. Tony sometimes seems very “wound up.”  At those times, he seems full of energy, talks very rapidly, and makes very grandiose plans. (One time, he gave away all of his belongings and was planning to move to Washington, D.C., so he could advise the President.)  At these times, he also seems to need almost no sleep. During other periods of time Tony seems very “down.”  During these times he does not take care of himself. He seems to want to sleep all the time, and he often makes thinly veiled references to wanting to commit suicide.

2. Emily often drinks too much, especially at parties. She has gotten two DUI tickets after leaving parties. She is also in danger of losing her job because she often misses work on Monday due to a hangover after partying on the weekend.

Specific diagnosis _______________  General class of disorder _______________

3. Paula has not left her house for several months. When she tries to go out, she experiences great anxiety. She says she is afraid that if she leaves her house to go somewhere, she will not be able to get back. Before all this started, Paula seemed fairly normal except for having several episodes where, for no apparent reason, her heart started pounding, she started to sweat profusely, and she experienced all the symptoms of fear and terror. One of the reasons she is afraid to leave the house is because she is afraid she will have one of these episodes again. (Hint:  there are two specific diagnoses here.)

4. Horace sleeps a lot, has great difficulty getting out of bed in the morning, and generally does not want to do anything. He has stopped seeing friends whom he used to see often, and declines all invitations to do things socially. His most common response is “I just don’t feel like it.”  He looks sad all the time and does not seem to take pleasure in everyday activities. This has been going on for the past two months.

Specific diagnosis _______________  General class of disorder _______________

5. Patricia is a 44-year-old female who reports that she has periods of time where she cannot remember what she has done. She reports that after one such period, she received a telephone call from a man who claimed to have met her in a bar where she was “the life of the party.”  She had also told the man her name was Priscilla. Patricia thinks that this is odd because she does not drink, and she is a rather shy and retiring person. However, the man had her correct telephone number and was able to give a good physical description of her.

Specific diagnosis _______________  General class of disorder _______________

6.  Marianne is a 34-year-old female showing signs of disorganized thought and flat affect. She says that she hears voices telling her to do things. She believes that her behavior is being controlled by other people and she thinks that all her former friends have formed a conspiracy and are out to get her. She also tends toward repetitive, highly ritualized behavior.

9.  Although he was not personally injured, Harry has had problems since the earthquake two years ago. He is listless and quarrelsome and sleeps fitfully, reliving the quake in nightmarish dreams.

Specific diagnosis _______________  General class of disorder _______________

10. Frank was attending college in San Francisco during a recent earthquake. He lived in the area that was hardest hit by the quake. Frank was not home when the earthquake hit and was not injured in any way, but when he returned home, he found his building demolished and his two roommates crushed to death. Frank immediately drove himself to the airport, bought a ticket to Boston, and got on the plane. His parents found him on their doorstep in Boston the next morning. Frank remembers nothing about the earthquake and nothing about going to college in San Francisco. The last thing he remembers is being a high school student and living with his parents in Boston.

THERAPY & TREATMENT: CHAPTER 16 ASSIGNMENT

PART I: (10 points)

Instructions: Answer the following questions thoroughly in paragraph format (complete sentences).

People with psychological disorders have been treated poorly throughout history. Describe some efforts to improve treatment, include explanations for the success or lack thereof.

Usually someone is hospitalized only if they are an imminent threat to themselves or others. Describe a situation that might meet these criteria.

Imagine that you are a psychiatrist. Your patient, Pat, comes to you with the following symptoms: anxiety and feelings of sadness. Which therapeutic approach would you recommend and why?

Compare and contrast individual and group therapies.

You are conducting an intake assessment. Your client is a 45-year-old single, employed male with cocaine dependence. He failed a drug screen at work and is mandated to treatment by his employer if he wants to keep his job. Your client admits that he needs help. Why would you recommend group therapy for him?

Lashawn is a 24-year-old African American female. For years she has been struggling with bulimia. She knows she has a problem, but she is not willing to seek mental health services. What are some reasons why she may be hesitant to get help?

If you were to choose a therapist practicing one of the techniques presented in the chapter, which kind of therapist would you choose and why?

Instructions: Applying your critical thinking, answer the following questions regarding approaches to treatment and therapy.

8. Pets can have a therapeutic effect on people; they seem to have the power to calm the anxious and cheer the depressed. Give three reasons why this might be so, based on what you have learned in this course.

9. Suppose a member of your family has become increasingly depressed in recent months and it is apparent that the person needs treatment. You are chosen to look into the options and to make decisions about the treatment. Based on information in Chapters 15 and 16 on depression and treatment, how might you proceed?

10. Nowadays, many people get “therapy” for their problems from self-help books. These books give advice on everything from conquering depression to breaking bad habits to improving your love life. Unfortunately, some books may do more harm than good. If the reader does not get “better,” his or her self-esteem, which may already be low, may suffer even further. Give at least three questions you should ask about any self-help book, based on the critical thinking guidelines in your textbook.

PART II:

Instructions: Identify the type of psychotherapy represented by each statement below, choosing from:

Cognitive    Humanistic

Psychodynamic   Family therapy

Behavioral

1. When she started relating to me in the way she related to her mother, it became clear that she perceived her mother as a rival for her father’s affection.

2. That child was a bad actor; he had a serious behavior disorder. It wasn’t difficult to understand how he got that way after I had a few sessions with his parents and siblings.

3. She has the worst case of agoraphobia I’ve ever seen. A peer counselor is stopping by every day to work with her. It took a week to get her out the front door, and more than a week to get her off the porch. They’re working on walking out to the mailbox now. We’re making progress, but it’s slow.

4. I had to refer a patient to another therapist last week. I just couldn’t seem to identify with the guy, and couldn’t accept the way he acted. Feeling as I did about him, I didn’t think I could help him.

5. The theme of hostility toward authority figures occurs over and over again in his dreams and free associations, yet he claims that he and his father had a close and affectionate relationship.

I asked her to list the reasons why she thinks she is unable to get through a job interview. She gave me

three typewritten pages enumerating more fears, apprehensions, self-criticisms, and negative self-evaluations than I would have believed possible for one person to have. Her thinking about herself has really gotten off the track.

7. He needs to convince himself that his past failures are not elements of a pattern that will govern his future. And he needs to convince himself that he is in charge of his life, and that he can choose the paths that will lead to accomplishment and satisfaction.

8.We have this voluntary program at the state penitentiary for men who have been convicted of child molestation. We are currently trying a method in which we pair electric shock with pictures of attractive children.

9. People do not develop in isolation. They are part of an interacting system. To effect a change in an individual, it is necessary to change the social context in which the individual operates.

10. We think that depression is frequently the result of misinterpretation of environmental events, a tendency to attribute failures to the self and accomplishments to things like luck, fate, or the help of other people. Most of us have a self-serving bias in our attributions; people who are depressed have a self-defeating bias in their attributions.

MODULE 3: JURY DUTY PROJECT

As someone with a background in psychology, you (Darius) have been chosen to be the foreman for this jury. It is your task to organize the jury’s thoughts on whether the defendant should be found guilty or innocent.

This particular jurisdiction requires a jury to submit a court document that summarizes the verdict process. Therefore, you will need to provide a Word document to the judge explaining the thought process of the Jury during deliberation for the court to file away as part of the official verdict. Use references from this module and include APA in-text citations.

Submit your completed assignment by following the directions below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.docx” extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:

Jstudent_exampleproblem_101504

note: the file I uploaded just download it and scroll down to module3…. the instruction for module 3 is what you should use to solve the above question. (module 3 Jury Duty )

* i added a zip file containing screenshots of the incident that happened with Darius. That is the case.

* also please ensure that every paragraphs should have or contain an in-text citation.

Issues

Check your paper for punctuation errors:

Unnecessary commas

(Example: She went to the store, and bought milk.)

Missing comma after introductory element

(Example: According to Erikson a child needs trust.)

Did you use punctuation to separate each of your complete thoughts or sentences? Read your sentences and look for missing punctuation like a comma or period.
Correct sentence structure (i.e. Each sentence must have a subject and a verb. Use the same verb tense. Use either present or past verb tense in your papers.)
Check for run-on sentences (i.e. Two or more complete clauses that could stand alone as a sentence).

Example: The brain is a fascinating structure it is the largest and most complex organ in the human body and it can suffer brain damage.

Check for sentence fragments (i.e. Part of a sentence that is presented as a complete sentence. Typically, fragments do not have a verb or subject.)

Examples: Short-term memory duration 30 seconds.

Long-term memory is held indefinitely. And holds informative information.

Compound sentences (i.e. A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses. Use a comma before the conjunction to indicate a pause between the two thoughts.)

Example: Short-term memory lasts for several seconds, and long-term memory is held indefinitely.

Check for spelling errors (i.e. Check for commonly misspelled words: then, than, effect, affect, its, it’s, their, there, they’re, to, too, two. Remember that spell checkers do not identify many spelling errors.)
Check your paper for unnecessary capitalization (i.e. Do not capitalize theories, theoretical concepts/stages, terms, etc.).

Example: Piaget’s Sensorimotor Stage is his first stage.

Check your paper for missing capitalization (i.e. capitalize proper nouns, the first words of sentences, and important words in titles. Common nouns are not capitalized.)

Example for common noun: I ordered a new computer online.

Example for a proper noun: I ordered a new laptop from Amazon.

Check your paper for missing words and other grammatical errors.

Suggestion: If you read your paper out loud to yourself or another person, you are more likely to notice omitted words as well as other grammatical errors.

Did you find and FIX any areas that your Word Processor has underlined? These are usually an indication that there is an error.

Discussion Posts (Initial and Reply) Grading Rubric:  Students are required to complete an initial post to each Module’s Discussion Question as well as two replies to their peers’ posts.

General Grading Rubric:

Initial Post-  /15 points

2 Reply Posts-  /8 points (4 points each)

Spelling/Grammar /2 points (1 point initial/1 point replies)

Total for each Module: /25 points

Please see the course calendar for due dates.

Note: Initial and Reply posts must be thoughtful and thought-provoking. A simple, “I agree or disagree” or “Yes or No” are not sufficient. When replying to another student’s post, please be respectful, ethical, and professional. Base your posts on both academic and anecdotal evidence.

Initial post:  Respond to every issue raised by the Discussion Question.  A thoughtful and thought-provoking post will be at least one to two paragraphs in length, including academic and anecdotal evidence.

Note For Reply Posts: Each reply needs to find common ground (agreement) as well as uncommon ground (disagreement) with your peer. In other words, identify 2-3 points with which you agree or disagree. Explain why you agree and/or disagree with each point. Doing so will expand your as well as your peer’s understanding of the issue. In addition, each reply needs to ask your peer one or more questions that expand their understanding of the issue.

This paper will be 2-3 pages in length. In order adequately address all requirements, the paper will be closer to 3 pages.

MODULE 2: BEHAVIOR PLAN PROJECT

Requirements

Completed

Behavior Intervention Plan

(NOTE: Make sure the behaviors you are addressing in this plan relate to both home and school settings. You can address how Brian can get feedback from the teacher and use that feedback to address home behaviors.)

3 Targeted Behaviors (decreased):

Each behavior needs to be stated in behaviorally-specific terms. For example, if you identify that Kaiden’s aggressive behavior needs to be decreased, you need to specify what aggressive behavior needs to be decreased. Is it hitting, yelling, or throwing objects?

  3 Punishments:

Identify a positive or negative punishment that would decrease each of the 3 targeted behaviors. I would suggest using negative punishment (i.e. removing a certain favorite item like a cell phone or video time).

  3 Replacement Behaviors (increased):

Each replacement behavior must be directly related to each targeted behavior. Each behavior needs to be stated in behaviorally-specific terms. For example, do not state “getting along with peers” or “being respectful.” For example, if you identify that Kaiden needs to be more respectful, you need to specify what respect looks like. Is it following instructions, making an apology, or following rules?

  3 Rewards:

Identify a positive or negative reinforcer that would increase each of the 3 replacement behaviors. Make sure the reinforcers are related to each replacement behavior.

Be sure to address Kaiden’s behaviors at school as well as those at home. For example, you could include a reinforcement scheme that is contingent on good or bad reports each day from Kaiden’s teacher.
  Measurable Goals:

Identify 3 behaviorally specific goals. How you will measure the child’s progress? How will the child know when he is making progress?

  Reinforcement Schedule(s):

Identify two different reinforcement schedules that you will use to shape the desired behaviors and goals. These reinforcement schedules are located in your text (i.e. continuous, partial or intermittent, fixed-ratio, fixed-interval, variable-ratio, variable-interval, etc.).

Behavior Chart(s) Choose one the charts or create your own chart.
Identify 5 replacement (desirable) behaviors that you want the child to learn. Make sure each behavior is stated in behaviorally-specific terms.
The 5 replacement behaviors must address both home and school behaviors that you want the child to learn.
Record each day that the child exhibits any of the desired behaviors. Mark one point for each.
State how many points the child needs to earn per week in order to receive a reward. From a developmental perspective, Kaiden is young and will require more frequent reinforcement.
Identify 3 different rewards the child can earn.
Observation Recording Form When you open this document, you will see a column named, “Consequence/Outcome.” There you will see the consequences of the child’s behavior. For each one, you will be required to substitute Ms. George’s reaction with ONE of the following:

(1) A positive reinforcer that would shape a more desirable behavior;

(2) A negative reinforcer that would shape a more desirable behavior; or,

(3) A negative punishment that would decrease the targeted behavior.

For example: Small group activity. Ms. George could tell the child that he could earn 10 minutes of video time if he reads. That is using positive reinforcement.

Prepare a 10-minute proposal for a research project demonstrating how engineering psychologists can employ shaping and chaining, reinforcement schedules or one-trial learning techniques (choose only one) to teach equipment operators how to operate a new piece of equipment—for example, pilots transitioning from an analog cockpit to a digital cockpit.

Address the following in your proposal:

· Hypotheses

· Methodology

· Population

Option 8: Industrial/Organizational Psychology Literature Review

Prepare a 3- to 5-page literature review for a research paper on how engineering psychologists employ shaping and chaining, reinforcement schedules, and one-trial learning techniques in designing the transition from one situation to a new one—for example, production assemblers learning to assemble a new computer that is similar to the previous model but has subtle but important differences. Provide citations from relevant human and animal research to support your assertions.

Address the following in your paper:

· Theoretical or construct basis for the concepts of shaping and chaining, reinforcement schedules and one-trial learning techniques, including historical development.

· Current understanding of effective application of these learning concepts
