Unit 5: Module 5 – M5 Assignment 2 Discussion

Discussion AssignmentAssignment 2: Discussion—Resiliency Factors and Prosocial Behavior

Too many times when we are assessing a child it is because there is a problem at home or at school that needs to be addressed, and the interventions that have been used thus far have not been successful. Unfortunately, we do not look enough for what is going right as well. There are many wonderful resiliency factors at play in the family and many prosocial behaviors that are encouraged in the community.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research some resiliency factors and some prosocial behaviors. Choose one resiliency factor (close bond with a caring adult, opportunities for responsibility, social skills, conflict resolution skills, supportive role models, sense of autonomy, and positive relating skills) or pro-social behavior (cooperation, empathy, altruism, sharing, giving comfort, offering to help, generosity, and respect) and then respond to the following:

  • Describe the important factors to be considered when teaching your selected resiliency factor or pro-social behavior to either a young child or an adolescent.
  • Why are these factors important?
  • Explain some of the obstacles to presenting this information in a manner to which children or adolescents would be receptive.

Write your initial response in a minimum of 300–400 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources, including use of in-text citations and full references. Incorporate information from at least two academic sources to support your statements or ideas. Academic sources could include your textbook, required readings for this week, or academic journal articles found in the Argosy University online library.

By Monday, November 10, 2014, post your response to the appropriateDiscussion Area. Through Wednesday, November 12, 2014, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. Consider commenting on the following:

  • Do you agree with the obstacles and the importance of the factors presented by your peers? Why or why not?
  • Suggest some alternative factors or obstacles not discussed by your peers.
  • Upon reviewing your peers’ answers, discuss whether you would like to consider a new perspective or whether your original perspective has been strengthened.

Ethics In Psychology

Directions:

You are to write an ethical profile paper that recognizes the formative influence of your family, heroes, and personal style on you as an ethical professional. This paper will provide a profile of you in regards to your ethical and professional practice. You will be required to include information on who you are as an ethical professional, how this course has shaped your unique ethical decision-making style, and the areas in which you feel still need further development.

Include the following four sections in your paper:

  1. Ethical Autobiography: First, explain how you think through and determine what is “right” and “wrong” (personally and professionally) in your own daily life. Second, identify four examples of ethical behaviors and explain how your cultural heritage has shaped your values. Third, describe the nature of the four ethical behaviors you see in yourself.
  2. Professional/Ethical Hero: First, identify an ethical “hero,” an individual that has most impressed you and serves as your role model because of their professional/ethical presence (i.e., sensitivity, appropriate boundaries, and respect for privacy, ethical commitment, and ethical courage). Elaborate on his or her ethical characteristics. Discuss how this person can (or does) serve as a role model for others in the helping profession. Second, describe how this “hero” has influenced your value system. Click here to read an article on ethical hero.
  3. Ethical Decision-Making Style: This section will articulate your implicit style in terms of ethical decision making. Although there are specific models that help facilitate ethical decision making, everyone has his or her own unique style. Taking into consideration the ethical decision-making models presented in this course, identify the style that reflects your early and ongoing experiences with moral values and issues that has been influenced and shaped by your parents, relatives, peers, and valued adults in your life, such as a teacher or coach. Use what you have written from your autobiography to supplement this discussion. In summary, explain your implicit ethical decision-making style, including how this course and your cultural heritage have served as influential factors.
  4. Professional and Ethical Development: Ethical development is, for most, a career-long process. In the last section of your paper, please identify at least two areas discussed in this module/course where you feel you would benefit from more development. Lastly, suggest ways in which you can acquire your further development.

Please include information from two or more external scholarly references using APA formatting for all citations.

Your paper should be approximately 6–8 pages in length, be double-spaced, in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal 1” margins; be written in APA style; and be free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.

Sex Segregation

In this assignment, you will explore socially derived gender norms and the role they play in primary education environments.

Assume that a friend is thinking about sending her six-year-old daughter to an all-girls’ school. She has asked for your opinion on whether all-girls’ schools are better for girls in terms of fostering achievement and self-esteem.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research sex-segregated education.

Based on your research, respond to the following:

  • What are your personal views on having sex-segregated education? What do you base these opinions on (personal experience, research, opinions of others, or media reports)?
  • What, according to scientific literature, are the biological, cultural, or social reasons for or against sex-segregated education? Is there evidence to suggest that there may be academic areas where sex-segregated education for girls or boys is beneficial?
  • Would sex-segregated education affect self-confidence and self-esteem in students and impact success in work, school, or the social environment?
  • Would you recommend that your friend send her daughter to an all-girls’ school?

Please note that your responses should represent both girls and boys with regard to your overall assessment of sex-segregated instruction.

Give reasons and examples from research in support of your assertions. Be sure to integrate research and personal views in your response.

Write your initial response in 300–400 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources

Psychological Disorders

Part 1:  Psychological Disorders
100 word minimum

Last week we studied psychological disorders.  Which of the disorders covered in our textbook do you think would be the most challenging to have and why?  Which of its symptoms would prove the most difficult for.  What what you most need from society if you had the disorder you selected?

enlightened Although any psychological disorder has challenges, here you must choose only one.  You don’t have to be a trained professional to answer this question; just think about what you believe would be challenging in general and particularly difficult about a particular disorder.

enlightened Because one never knows who might have a disorder (people with psychological disorders are in society, around us all the time), we always want to use respectful language and avoid words like “crazy” or “insane” or statements like, “That would be horrific to have” or “I would want society to put me away if I had that…”.  These are all words that have been used in past posts used with no intent to hurt others but which still can sting.

In preparation for this portion of the Week 8 Forum topic, you are encouraged to visit the site, Lost Among Us at http://lang.sbsun.com/projects/lostamongus/displayarticle.asp?part=6&article=art02_saida03
and learn about the case of Saida Dugally, a real-life woman who suffered from bipolar disorder until her tragic death in 2003. On this web resource you will find videos of her story and the time-line of her decline into mental illness, as well as journal excerpts and photos from her life.

Saida’s story is but one among many. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

Part 2:  Reflection on Learning
200 word minimum

1. Share three “take-away” elements of the course that added to your understanding of human psychology and that you believe will serve you well in the future in both your personal and professional lives and explain why. NOTE: A list of textbook chapter topics and accompanying chapter concept descriptions can’t be submitted for this assignment; it isn’t about the course textbook. Here you are sharing learning that was and that you believe will remain of value to you, not chapter reviews. Neither will statements of “Nothing” or “I don’t know” or “I can’t name three” meet the requirements of this assignment. Be thorough, thoughtful and focused in this part of the post. Think about what stood out to you and why it did during the 8 weeks.

2. Describe the most meaningful three experiences you had while participating in the course discussions with your classmates.

3. Complete the sentence below. In filling in the blanks, think about information that you learned in completion of the course rather than a preformed opinion in place at the time we started 8 weeks ago and elaborate in the space following the word “because” about why you picked what you did (just one pick–no hedging with multiple ideas).

If I could pick just one thing that the world would be well served to better understand about psychology it would be ________________. I chose this because ________________.

Don’t breeze through the second part of this forum. It is graded as much for substance, insight and careful thought as all the previous discussions were.
