SOCIAL AND CULTURAL NORMS

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL NORMS

Social and Cultural Norms

Overview

In this assignment, you will argue a pro or con position involving minorities, women, or LGBTQ individuals given an audience with opposing views.

Presenting stereotypes of minorities/women/LGBTQ individuals affects viewers’ conceptions of different groups.

How do such skewed views affect real-life interactions with members of minority groups? Is there a difference among such genres as comedies, dramas, police procedurals, children’s shows, cartoons, and reality shows, in how marginalized people are portrayed? Can you cite any examples from your own experiences?

The media should be trusted to provide the means to change people’s perceptions of minorities. Argue for or against this statement.

The Purpose of Punishment

The Purpose of Punishment

People have varying viewpoints on the purpose of punishment. The five purposes of punishment are incapacitation, rehabilitation, deterrence, retribution, and restoration. Consider the following scenario:

John Smith was robbing a 7-11 convenience store when a customer tackled him from behind and his gun went off. The clerk was killed, and Smith was found guilty of capital murder.

On the basis of the scenario, answer the following questions:

  • Determine how each of the five purposes of punishment influences the correctional processes and correctional facilities. Which purpose of punishment would be best utilized in this instance?
  • How are a correctional facility’s structure and procedures influenced by the purpose it is trying to achieve? For instance, a facility that aims to achieve rehabilitation will be designed and run differently than a facility that aims to achieve incapacitation.
  • Do you think it is appropriate for a state to punish someone solely for retribution? Also, discuss which purposes you believe capital punishment aims to achieve.

Final Evaluation Research Design

your completed Final Project by reviewing and editing your Assignments to create a cohesive paper. Add an Introduction and Rationale for the study. Your Final Project should be 4–6 pages in length.

Below, you will find an outline of topics that should be addressed in your Final Project. You are not required to exactly follow this outline; however, you must be certain that each component is clearly addressed in your final design.

Although your project for this course is only a design document and not a full report, you will find it useful to review your Learning Resources. Many of the same points and principles apply equally well at the research design stage.

Your Final Project will include the following elements:

  • Problem definition and intervention description
  • Logic model or logframe
  • Development of indicators
  • Data collection strategy
  • Evaluation design, needs assessment, or formative or summative impact evaluation
  • Data analysis strategy
  • Stakeholder requirements

Policy Evaluation on Aftercare of Juvenile Defendants Incarcerated

Program Evaluation

Policy Evaluation

My evaluation will be about the aftercare of juveniles after they are incarcerated. It will give research methods to collect and analyze data to prove the positive effects of this program and how it has an impact on juvenile offenders. The evaluation will not leave the reader without any unanswered questions and the results will be able to show the program’s effectiveness, show ways to improve the performance or guide resource sharing. A program evaluation is meant to analyze performance measures to assess the achievement of performance objectives. It can also be made to answer a broad spectrum of questions that may come about from the programs to aid in decision-making by program managers and policymakers. The policy evaluation on the aftercare of juvenile defendants that were previously incarcerated, is designed to give juveniles the chance and the proper resources that they need to be successful in the community. When a juvenile offender is incarcerated, they are missing out on their schooling, learning the necessary life skills, and not having the chance to spend much needed time with their families. One upside of this program will give them a push in their educational track, whether it is helping them obtain a high school diploma or a GED. They will be able to get tested to make sure they are in the grade they are supposed to be in. This will boost the number of juveniles that have been incarcerated for this desired program. This will then give the outcome of them being able to get out into the real world and use their degrees and possibly further their education beyond high school. Some relevant evaluation questions that could come about are about their school. How would they be able to ensure that they will have the necessary guidance to follow them through the rest of the educational track? Questions may be raised about what they are going to do once their get their diploma. Program and policy makers can request information about the program performance to make diverse program management. Clarifying the issue is important to determine the requester’s priorities and develop clearly defined researchable questions.

There is the possibility of validity threats, specifically internal threats that can arise when doing an evaluation design. Internal validity refers to the accuracy of the casual claims. This is primarily relevant when casual claims are at issue. This seems to be the most important when evaluations are at issue. Then there is external validity which is the generalizability of research results and this happens when results are applicable to other times and places and the larger population that is of interest.

Scenario

Jerry J. is 14 years-old and lives in Kissimmee Florida. Jerry is a Freshman in Orange High School. A juvenile judge found Jerry guilty last week of Possession of a controlled substance (crack cocaine) with intent to sell. The offense is a second degree felony. It was discovered that Jerry was a drug runner for a local drug dealer who is associated with the “Crips” gang. Jerry states he is a “Crip” but the probation officer believes Jerry is just being used to make money. Jerry has a case history in juvenile court. When he was 11 years-old he was arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart. The case was dismissed when Jerry agreed to attend a diversion program with his father. Jerry was arrested for an assault on a school mate last year. The victim was an 11th grader who was making fun of Jerry at lunch. Jerry attacked him with a baseball bat causing numerous injuries including a broken leg. The case was processed in court and Jerry agreed to probation. Jerry sparingly attended his probation sessions. During his probation Jerry did receive some cognitive-behavioral psychological treatment for his aggressive behavior. The probation officer felt that Jerry was not getting any encouragement from home and his father never made it to the sessions. At the time of his arrest the probation officer was preparing to revoke Jerry’s probation due to non-attendance.

Jerry has no mother figure in his life. She abandoned the family when Jerry was four years-old. It is known that she died of an overdose five years ago. Jerry’s father is an alcoholic who is unemployed. Jerry’s father states he tries to help out, but Jerry is hard to control as he does what he wants. He is frequently out of the house hanging out with the gang members and can’t keep track of Jerry. Jerry’s father adds that Jerry has been bringing food home and they have been eating better. Jerry has no brothers or sisters. The local child welfare agency has investigated Jerry’s father for neglect. The matter was dropped when he attended child care classes. The neighbors have been somewhat involved in Jerry’s life. They are a retired couple who have fed Jerry and help him from time to time. They believe Jerry can do better if he were to get better parenting. They have expressed an interest in raising Jerry.

Jerry was a C and D student before he was kicked out of school for assault and battery. School records show his grades were generally good. However, Jerry had an issue with non-attendance. He was cited for truancy at least 10 times in his freshman year before he was kicked out of school. Jerry was tested at school and did not show to have any developmental disabilities. The school counselor stated that Jerry tested as borderline ADHD. The principal states that Jerry was a good student he just didn’t apply himself. He also added that Jerry did not get along with his fellow students and was more of an outsider. He did get in frequent fights with his fellow students. The psychologist that did treat Jerry as part of his probation noted that Jerry had impulse control problems and was quick to anger. He stated that Jerry has largely been undisciplined and appeared to have issues with his mother and father that were unresolved. Jerry doesn’t have any friends in school or the neighborhood. Jerry only seemed to relate to the older couple who lived next door. Jerry also tested positive for cocaine in his drug test taken after arrest.

Jerry is not remorseful about his drug arrest. He states that he was bored and needed some money to live. Jerry is remorseful about being incarcerated and missing the neighbors who he has begun to trust. Jerry does not want to see his father again.
