Research Investigation Progress Check 1

SCS 200 Research Investigation Progress Check 1 Guidelines and Rubric

Overview: Throughout Theme: Exploring Social Science Issues, you have been guided through work on Project One (a research investigation), which you will continue to work on in Theme: Performing the Research Investigation and Theme: Tailoring the Message to an Audience and will formally submit to your instructor at the end of Week 5. This assignment provides you with an important opportunity to get valuable instructor feedback on the progress you are making and to ensure you are on the right track for your later submission.

Prompt: Throughout Theme: Exploring Social Science Issues, you have explored social science issues for further investigation and examined social science principles that relate to issues of interest to you. Specifically, in this assignment, you will submit the Project One elements listed below for review by your instructor.

In Theme: Exploring Social Science Issues, learning block 2-2 (page 4), you began working on the following section of the prompt:

I. Introduction A. Describe the issue in the social sciences that you have selected to

investigate. Why is this issue significant?

In Theme: Exploring Social Science Issues, learning block 2-3 (page 2), you completed the following work:

II. Body A. Identify the social science principles that apply to your issue. In other

words, which principles of social science apply to the issue you selected? B. Explain how the principles you identified apply to your issue. In other

words, how are the social science principles you identified relevant to your issue?

Please note that the numbering included above directly aligns with the numbering of these elements as they are presented in the Project One Guidelines and Rubric document.

Scheduling And Cost Problems

Exercise #2

Given the network plan that follows, compute the early, late, and slack times. What is the project duration? Using any approach you wish (e.g., trial and error), develop a loading chart for resources Carpenters (C) and Electricians (E). Assume only one Carpenter is available and two Electricians are available. Given your resource schedule, compute the early, late, and slack times for your project. Which activities are now critical? What is the project duration now?

Exercise #5

Develop a resource schedule in the loading chart that follows. Use the parallel method and heuristics given. Be sure to update each period as the computer would do. Note: activities 2, 3, 5, and 6 use two of the resource skills. Three of the resource skills are available. How has slack changed for each activity? Has the risk of being late changed? How?

Exercise #6

You have prepared the following schedule for a project in which the key resource is a backhoe(s). This schedule is contingent on having 3 backhoes. You receive a call from your partner, Brooker, who desperately needs one of your backhoes. You tell Brooker you would be willing to let him have the backhoe if you are still able to complete your project in 11 months. Develop a resource schedule in the loading chart that follows to see if it is pos-sible to complete the project in 11 months with only 2 backhoes. Be sure to record the order in which you schedule the activities using scheduling heuristics. Activities 5 and 6 require 2 backhoes, while activities 1, 2, 3, and 4 require 1 backhoe. No splitting of activities is possible. Can you say yes to Brooker’s request?

Exercise #11Given the time-phased work packages and network, complete the baseline budget form for the project.

Code Of Ethics And Conduct: Poor Judgement

The purpose of this assignment is to understand how ethics and the law affect a variety of health care professions. The ethical code for each profession demands a high level of honesty, integrity, and responsibility. Professional behavior facilitates the resolution of ethical dilemmas, and each health care professional should have access to the board’s code of ethics regulating the specific profession. Personal behavior should be maintained at its highest standards, and health care professionals should comply with all governmental rules and regulations.

Read the “Poor Judgement” case study, located at the end of Chapter 9 of the textbook, and evaluate the ethical and legal issues in the case. In a 750- to 1,000-word reflection on the case study, address the following:

  • Examine the different ethical codes for health care professionals.
  • Compare prevailing ethical codes and principles.
  • Apply ethical codes and principles to health care situations.
  • Explain how to minimize bias and develop objectivity based on the different codes of ethics and codes of conduct.

Support the assignment with 2–3 scholarly resources.

II. Doctors of chiropractic should maintain the highest standards of professional and personal conduct and should comply with all governmental rules and regulations.

III. Doctors of chiropractic have an obligation to the profession to endeavor to assure that their behavior does not give the appearance of professional impropriety. Any actions that may benefit the practitioner to the detriment of the profession must be avoided so as not to erode public trust.

The chief medical officer of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Regulation and Licensure inPoor v. State46 entered an order revoking Poor’s license to practice as a chiropractor in the state of Nebraska.Poor engaged in a conspiracy to manufacture and distribute a misbranded substance and introduced into interstate commerce misbranded and adulterated drugs with the intent to defraud and mislead. He was arrested for driving under the influence and was convicted of that offen. In addition, Poor knowingly possessed cocaine. He conceded that these factual determinations were understood as beyond dispute. The district court’s determination that Poor had engaged in “grossly immoral or dishonorable conduct” was not based on “trivial reasons.” The appeals court found that Poor’s conduct clearly fell within the plain and ordinary meaning of grossly immoral or dishonorable conduct. In its order finding Poor to be unfit, the district court relied ipart on Poor’s denial of conduct underlying a previous felony conviction. The court stated, “Poor’s denial now, after taking advantage of a plea bargain, that he committed any of the acts he admitted to in the United State[s] District Court is disturbing and is not consistent with the integrity and acceptance of responsibility expected by persons engaged in a professional occupation.”Chiropractic medicine is a regulated healthcare profession. Patients necessarily rely on a chiropractor’s honesty, integrity, sound professional judgment, and compliance with applicable governmental regulations. Poor argued that there was absolutely no testimony or evidence to the effect that anything he did constituted a threat of harm tohis patients. The Supreme Court of Nebraska determined that due to the seriousness of Poor’s felony conviction and its underlying conduct, his subsequent lack of candor with respect to that conduct, as well as his lack of sound judgment demonstrated by his driving-under-the-influence conviction, revocation of Poor’s license was anappropriate sanction.

Ethical and Legal Issues

1. Did the chiropractor in this case violate his professional code of ethics? Explain your answer.

2. Describe how an individual’s personal life can affect his or her professional career.
