You will comment on two of your classmates responses.
In a paragraph or
two (minimum 100 words), as a reply to a classmates
post,
answer the following questions. You will need to do this twice for two
different classmates. For each, reply to their post by reflecting on their
response and building upon their application of psychological disorders by
answering all the following questions:
1. Do you
agree with your fellow student’s application? When necessary,
point to specific
symptoms and provide examples to support your
discussion.
2. In your
opinion, what can we do as a society to not carelessly label
people with
psychological disorders, just because their behavior is extreme or uncommon.
3. Do you
think the behavior discussed in the original post would be
considered abnormal
by people in other societies and cultures?

There are many great
movies that portray people with psychological
disorders, but the movie that
stuck out to me the most was Shutter Island
by Martin
Scorsese. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) suffers from
Delusional disorder. Delusional disorder is described as, “false,
unusual, and
sometimes magical beliefs that are not part of an individual’s
culture”
(474). An example provided from our textbook, “Experience
Psychology” for a
delusional person may think they are someone who they are not, such as Jesus
Christ or Muhammad.
The movie starts off when
Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshall, and his partner,
Mark Ruffalo are investigating
a missing person at Ashecliffe Hospital, an
insane asylum located on a secluded
island. We later find Teddy Daniels is
not a real person and it is created by
the inmate Andrew Laeddis who was
incarcerated for murdering his wife. The
portrayal of how Laeddis creates
and believing he is a federal agent sent to
investigate a crime at the insane asylum when he is actually a patient there
provides a perfect example of the delusional disorder. Attached with this
disorder is hallucination. In one of the scenes, Laeddis can be seen holding
his wife in disbelief when all of a
sudden, she turns into ash. Laeddis was
hallucinating that his wife was still alive after knowing he had killed her for
drowning their kids.

The show, Moonknight, portrays mental illness in an interesting way. In the
beginning, we are introduced to two different characters, Steven and Marc.
Steven appears to be an Englishman working in a gift shop in a museum. On the
other hand, Marc is an American and a mercenary. The two seem to be completely
different characters, each living their own life. Every time Steven wakes up
from his sleep, he has gaps in his memories and lacks any
recollection of
anything that happened at night; however, he does not
realize that days have
passed. Their situation may not reflect the most
realistic interpretation of
mental illness, but its underlying problem is rooted in mental illness. Upon
reviewing his own memories, Steven realizes that he does not have certain
memories, such as when he was a child. Having gaps in memories is a symptom of
dissociative personality disorder. Each
personality is also unaware of one
other. Each personality only appears
depending on a certain trigger. In fact,
the multiple personalities that Marc
develops is due to childhood trauma. As a
child, Marc protects himself by ”
dissociating” in response to trauma.
Unlike Marc, Steven is more upbeat and optimistic and views everything in a
positive light, for the most part, which
helps to protect himself when dealing
with stressful situations. From dealing with childhood trauma for so long, this
split personality remains and persists throughout his lifetime. While not
completely accurate, this show reflects
the fantastical side of mental illness
and what goes on in a person’s brain. It depicts the varying personalities and
the fragmentation of Marc as a person and shows his journey with learning about
himself and how he copes with
his condition.
