The radio itself has had ups and downs in terms of popularity with the public but in the present day and age, it is one of the fastest-growing forms of mass communication (Hendy, 2000). It is a source for understanding the popular culture of a region and a method to judge the penetration of certain ideas. For example, in the US there are more than 1,200 talk radio shows every day and the number of people reached by the shows goes into the tens of millions. Social scientists have gone as far as to say that it is as a medium more important than the internet since the use of the telephone it can allow for extremely cheap access to the opinions of others and the reception of many different ideas from a wide spectrum of society (Scannell, 1991).

Talk radio in particular is important as a medium for political debate since it allows people to get their say in. Of course, the words of an individual may not represent the consensus of a whole society but the debate caused by those words might be important for the whole world (Scannell, 1991). As opposed to simply watching a political debate on television where the opinions of a few experts are given, or even reading the newspaper where the opinions of only one person are received, talk radio allows anyone who has to drive to be a participant in a political dialog to be a contributor (Scannell, 1996).

In terms of the things which talk radio focuses on, it is a clear winner when compared to syndicated shows or the coverage of events on television. Issues that may be left alone by television due to a wide-ranging audience with conservative sensibilities are often covered with a lot of discussion and detail with talk radio (Hendy, 2000).

Clifford is aware of the fact that he cannot bear children, which is a threat to his powerful position. In order to retain this power, he suggests to her once that she is free to have a child with another man under the condition that the child would be brought up by them. “I don’t care who his father may be, so long as he is a healthy man not below normal intelligence.” (Lawrence 2011)This way, he hopes for continual power over his wife and the child she would bear with another man.

Lady Chatterley is equal to Sir Clifford on the basis of their respective social classes but she has a powerless role in her house. Being surrounded by the powerful figure of her husband and his legacy, there is not much that Lady Chatterley can do about her role.

An explanation that addiction/alcoholism is a consequence of an individual’s personal choice is adhered to by proponents of the moral model. The view that indulgence in alcohol and substance abuse is a personal choice makes it justifiable for an individual to be punished. Another perspective views addiction/alcoholism is related to the parent’s excessive neglect during childhood. This type of explanation is characteristic of the socio-cultural and psychological models of addiction. Several studies reveal that people who become addicts have underlying psychological disorders and these interact with certain socio-cultural factors to cause further exacerbation of substance abuse. . In the well-being paradigm, “substance abuse is viewed as reflecting an underlying, intra-psychological deficiency” (Maton et al., 1992, p. 81). These psychological problems cause emotional pain and relief from pain is readily offered by alcohol and drug use.

On the other hand, the disease concept of substance abuse postulates that addiction is a primary disease and not secondary or corollary to another condition. “Perhaps the greatest advantage to the articulation that addiction is a disease has been to remove the moral stigma attached to chemical dependency and to replace it with an emphasis on treatment of an illness” (Fisher et al, 1997, p. 45).
