Reflection: Correlation

Requirements:Your reflection post needs to be at least 10 full sentences; there is no maximum limitYour post must be written in your own wordsIf you refer to a source such as an article, video, or a book, provide a link or other identifying information about the source. Sources are not required for this reflection post, but they might be relevant. The source could be our textbook. If you refer to sources, use APA format citations (in-text citations and a reference list; see the APA resources in Canvas)Respond to 2 other students’ posts. Your responses have no specific length requirements, but you need to refer to something in the student’s post, showing that you read it (something like “I agree” or “Interesting!” is not enough for the points). If you respond to a student that initially responded to you, that also counts as one of your responses (the idea is obviously to generate discussion here)GRADING:10 points for your own post (you get the full points if your post is at least 10 sentences and your discussion is relevant to the topic; your opinions, ideas and experiences are not graded for “accuracy”)REFLECTION TOPIC: CORRELATIONOne of the important distinctions between correlational and experimental research methods is that while experiments can tell us something about cause and effect (because we carefully manipulate some variable and try to control extraneous variables), correlational research cannot (because we only observe and measure the variables and don’t manipulate them). Just because X is related to Y does not mean that X causes Y.One example of this is that there’s a correlation between length of marriage and hair loss in men, such that men who have been married for a longer time tend to have less hair on their head. Does this mean that marriage causes hair loss? Well, maybe, but there’s probably a third variable involved here: age (older men tend to have less hair and are more likely to have been married longer than younger men).Another example: Women who give birth at older maternal ages live longer than women whose last child is born when they are younger. Does giving birth at an older maternal age cause women to live longer? Not necessarily; a possible third variable might be rate of aging (how fast a person ages): women who age slower are still able to have children at older ages, and they also live longer because they age slower (this means that giving birth did not cause the increased longevity).  For another famous third variable example, see my lecture for this module.Note that the third variable must cause/explain BOTH of the correlated variables.Question : We often believe that two things are related, even though in actuality we just notice random coincidences. For example, some people may believe that when they wash their car it will soon rain, and when couples adopt they immediately get pregnant. We easily perceive patterns even when they are not there. This phenomenon is called an illusory correlation. Can you identify any illusory correlations that you or people you know hold (or have held in the past)?

Assignment: Kingdon: Agendas, Alternatives, and Public Policies-6361-wk5Ass

Agenda building is often the first step in your policy practice tasks. Building a solid agenda may well determine the success of the development of a policy proposal and may also determine your success in placing an issue in front of a decision maker. For this Assignment, you evaluate the accuracy of the Kingdon model of policymaking. To prepare: Review Chapter 6 in your text, paying special attention to the section entitled “Three Challenges in Agenda Building.”Submit a 2- to 3-page paper evaluating the accuracy of the Kingdon model in policymaking. Address the following:Discuss the three streams Kingdon has identified where problems originate, and provide your opinion on which one most accurately reflects how and why policies come about.Discuss the assertion that certain kinds of issues receive preferential treatment in problem solution and political streams.Discuss tactics that policy practitioners use within each of the three streams to increase the odds that a specific issue will be placed on decision agendas.Required ReadingsSOCW 6361 WebliographyThese websites will be required throughout the semester. Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s Theories of DevelopmentThe psychologists highlighted this week researched and developed their theories many years ago. Since then, new information and thinking about child development and learning has emerged. For example, there is currently an ongoing debate about the role that language plays in cognitive development and learning. Piaget believed that a child’s self-directed speech reflects his or her mental activity and does not play a role in cognitive development. Vygotsky, on the other hand, believed that children’s speech helps them solve problems, plan strategies, and control their behavior. Think about the role that language capabilities have had in your own development and learning and consider which of these theories you agree with. Then consider what you have learned from this week’s reading about Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories of development.By Day 3:Post one of the following:How your thoughts about the role language plays in children’s cognitive development and learning is more in sync with those of Piaget or VygotskyWhat you believe is the greatest contribution of either or both theorists with regard to understanding how children learnSource used for this assignment is attached below!

A Key Contributing Factor Towards Gang Behavior.

Provide a 6 pages analysis while answering the following question: A Key Contributing Factor Towards Gang Behavior. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide. An abstract is required.

This is a real problem based on the fact that these gangs are always at loggerheads with each other even though they have no compassion for human life and therefore will go to any lengths, including murder, to protect their interests. To be able to solve this problem, it is important to study the reasons or the root causes of gang behavior to try to prevent new gang membership, while at the same time embarking on a mission to dismantle the already existing ones. This paper is a critical evaluation of the factors that influence gang behavior.

Human beings are born innocent, free of sins, and incapable of making any decision. However, as they continue to grow, they are faced with numerous challenges ranging from family issues to other environmental factors, which influence their innocent minds either into becoming responsible persons or the worst of criminals in society. To begin with, parents contribute a significant percentage towards the success or failure of a child in terms of behavior. This is because they act as immediate role models and a source of inspiration for their growing children.

It is for this reason that Carlie (2002) observes that poor parentage is a major contributing factor to gang behavior. For example, if one or both parents are gang members, more often than not, it becomes likely that their children will follow that route. This may be worse in families that are dysfunctional and which are characterized by numerous cases of domestic conflicts and child abuse. The rationale of this assertion is that if a child is subjected to these factors, he will grow up believing that violence is a virtue and unless this mentality is changed through proper guidance and counseling, then, the child would have neither a reason nor the guts to refrain from joining violent organizations.

Outside family circles, growing up children and youths are influenced by peer pressure to engage in antisocial behavior, which may include gang membership.
