Module 3 Assignement: Nursing Informatics Applications: Ethics, Privacy, and Security

Assignment Description:

Please complete the following Professional Development exercises.

  • Read the following Ethics case. Discuss and analyze using the ETHICAL model presented in Chapter 5.

Paul is a 12-year-old male diabetic. He maintains his personal digital assistant (PDA), hand-held device, that interfaces with his glucometer and provides information based on inputted data from him and his parents. This information is transmitted to his MD/hospital, school nurse, case manager (CM), and to the parents’ home computer. All in an attempt to better control his diabetes. You are his CM.

The PDA sends an update to you since Paul’s blood glucose levels have been rising steadily for the last 5 days. The physician has left a message for you to contact this family and have them come in for an evaluation. You know that both of his parents work so you send an e-mail message to the parents via their home computer asking them to bring Paul in for an assessment. Since you are in a hurry and will be seeing other patients when they return from work, you decide to add more information to the message than normal reviewing with them the importance of maintaining control over the diabetes and expressing your concern since Paul has not checked in with you lately. You tell them that you think he might be over-doing it since he is trying to play football. You ask how they are doing and if they are still attending their counseling sessions.

Paul’s 4-year-old sister, Lilah, sends your email out to all of the diabetic lists that both Paul and his parents belong. They interact with people on these lists regularly.

The parents are outraged that this information was sent everywhere. Imagine that you are the designated Privacy Officer in a healthcare institution.

Explain the following:

  • How would you feel in this situation?
  • What is the problem? (Clearly state the problem)
  • What ethical principles would guide you in this case?
  • What are the alternatives for solving this dilemma?
  • What are the consequences for each alternative generated?
  • In your opinion, what is the first choice from the alternatives and why?
  • Does your choice take into consideration all of the persons involved and the consequences to each of them?
  • If the worst case scenario would occur based on your choice, could you live with your decision?
  • Based on your choice, what is your plan of action?
  • What types of monitoring procedures would you develop?
  • What would you include in your sanctions for violations policy?
  • How would you address the following?
    • Tracking each point of access of the patient’s database including who entered the data
    • Nurses in your hospital have an access code that only gives them access to their Unit’s patients. A visitor accidentally comes to the wrong unit looking for a patient and asks the nurse to find out what unit the patient is on.

Discuss Analysis of Economic Fluctuations in the United States.

Complete 3 pages APA formatted article: Analysis of Economic Fluctuations in the United States. The correlograms of all the variables except the government non-wage income become zero from the third-order ones. This shows that all the variables except the government’s non-wage income describe fluctuating trends in the period of analysis. The government’s non-wage income show a steady rising trend in the period of analysis. The correlogram of this variable is not gradually declining and remains the same. The scatter plots show that there is a significant positive correlation between income and consumption. Though a positive correlation can be seen in income and investment, it is not so significant compared to the previous one.

The OLS estimation for consumption shows the perfect model fit. The coefficients for wage income and profit income are positive and significant. One percent rise in wage income leads to a significant rise of 19 percent consumption while a one percent rise in wage income leads to a significant rise of 79 percent in consumption. The actual and fitted values of Consumption show perfect fit, as shown from the graphs in appendix 2. The 2SLS estimation shows that only wage income is significant in determining consumption. Here the coefficient for wage income has increased to 81.6 percent compared to the OLS estimation. At the same time, profit income lost its significance here. The actual and fitted values show a perfect fit in this case also.

For the estimation of investment with OLS, current, and lagged values of profit income are positive and significant while the lagged value of the capital stock is significant and negative in determining investment. One percent rise in current and lagged&nbsp.values of profit income leads to a significant rise of 47.9 and 33.3 percent in investment while a one percent rise in lagged capital stock value leads to a significant decline of 11.2 percent in the investment.

Discussion on Evidence relating to family issue.

Provide a 5 pages analysis while answering the following question: Evidence relating to family issue. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide. An abstract is required. The understanding of major concerns impinging upon these families: interactions or relationships with healthcare providers and social support are improved when they are defined as family weaknesses, resources, and evaluation within the perspective of the family systems theory. Of these models, family evaluation emphasises the essence of observing the family from the point of view of the family itself (Bengston, Acock, Allen, Dilworth-Anderson, & Klein, 2004).

This approach will be used in the assessment of the single-mother and her family as well as the potential stress she may experience due to the demands of motherhood, work life and care giving. This particular assessment will be used in identifying the best strategies for coping and managing time that she and her family can apply.

Involvement in the treatment procedure could be difficult for healthcare providers and families for various causes. Nurses supporting adults with dementia showed dissatisfaction working with elderly caregivers and sensed that these caregivers were more doubtful than others they assisted (Smith, Coleman & Bradshaw, 2002). Furthermore, nurses observed parents were opposed to adjustments when it was, in the belief of the nurse, are for the benefit of the client (Hanson, 2001).

The single-mother, being in her early forties and being the primary caregiver of her father, may have problems dealing with support service providers. Furthermore, being a single-parent to three children she may resist proposed family adjustment strategies from the nurse/s. She will more likely refuse to change her coping strategies and time management because these adjustments mean adjustments in the entire family systems and processes.
