WEEK 1 DIS QUESTION

What is the relationship between language and cognition? This question is important for psychologists, linguists, and educators, as well as professionals from many other disciplines. For normally developing children, research shows that there is a typical development sequence in both language and cognitive development. For instance, most children learn how to make words plural before they learn how to use the past tense. Likewise, in cognitive development, younger children think more concretely before they develop the ability to reason and think abstractly.Theorists and researchers have established the parameters and documented many of the products of human language and cognitive development but are still working to determine how these developments occur and the precise relationship between language and cognition. Likewise, many researchers are exploring new areas related to atypical development and factors that may increase human capacity for language and cognition. For this Discussion, you are asked to share an area of language study about which you are interested in learning more and provide resources to your colleagues about the topics of interest they identified. To prepare:· Review the Learning Resources, including the media, and begin to consider what language is and how it develops in the human brain.· Select one topic from this week’s Learning Resources that you found interesting (e.g., communication development in infancy, the biological basis of language or cognition, social cognition). With these thoughts in mind:Post an explanation of the idea or concept that you selected and why you find it interesting or compelling. What about this idea or concept do you want to learn more about? Use terminology from the Learning Resources in your post.Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Use proper APA format and citations.RESOURCES FOR THIS WEEK’S QUESTION; Gleason, J. B., & Ratner, N. B. (2017). The development of language (9th ed.). Gender Identity Response

1.For me growing up, gender identity was determined by your genitalia, and will still be determined by those genitals as long God lends me breath no matter what society says because whether or not they wish to call x or y they were either born a girl or a boy, and they both have different roles and these different roles are confused in their given roles by whom they choose to be and not whom they were born to be.According to ( Britannica .com ) gender identity, an individual’s self-conception as a man or woman or as a boy or a girl or as some combination of man/boy and woman/girl or as someone fluctuating between man/boy and woman/girl or someone outside those categories altogether. It is distinguished from actual biological sex- i-e., male or female. For most persons, gender identity and biological sex correspond conventionally. Some individuals, however, experience little or no connection between sex and gender; among transgender persons. And because many of us are from the old school, we will definitely have a problem with current social institutions because each gender is supposed to have its facilities and different roles.question to the class, Do you think that gender role is important in today’s societyReference:This week’s video on gender roles x and yGender identity/Definition, Theories, & Facts- Encyclopedia Britannicahttps://www.britannica,com/topic/gender-identityReply2.Gender identity helps people identify their gender, if they feel otherwise, or to better understand themselves. Society has changed and evolved, and so have the people in it. Gender has always put labels on everything, based on the person’s gender, it’s been that way for the longest. Since our world is becoming more diverse and understanding, we are open to understanding other people’s individual insights towards themselves and respecting them. If they feel like a girl in a boy’s body, then great! We are not letting labels or the “norm” interfere with someone’s growth/identity. A great example of this is the video Baby X Animated short film by Brendan Bradley, in this video, they present a child that doesn’t look too much like a boy or girl. I enjoyed watching this short film, it’s about accepting people as they are and not letting labels identify what you need to like or activities you should do. This understanding of gender can cause conflict because people are not always open to change, change is scary.BABY X | Animated Short FilmDuration: 11:17User: Brendan Bradley –  Added: 4/19/16Reply3.Hello professor and class,The difference between sex and gender is that sex is your biological characteristics or chromosomal features that’s differentiates you from a male or female, gender is the roles of male and female that are expected from society or social groups. For example, ideas about how men and women are expected to behave, dress, and communicate all contribute to gender. Gender is also a social and legal status as girls and boys, men, and women. Gender identity has changed overtime where as back in the times when I was growing up, which lies between the early 90s and 2000s, I don’t recall any huge issues about gender or the way people viewed themselves. Everyone simply identified as their biological sex. I do recall many individuals not being as open with gender identity changes as they are now days. These type of behaviors were kept secret or hidden. With this understanding of sex and gender, many individuals may start to rebell against many guidelines, rules, and regulations presented by institutions or practices. “In science, as our understanding grows, so must the precision of our language in communicating what we know.”(Mazure, C. M.) I believe this statement is true because without the proper knowledge of such issues promotes negative judgments and perspectives.Mazure, C. M. Assignment 2: LASA 2 Reducing Intergroup Conflict

Research suggests a number of strategies to reduce intergroup conflict. To further explore these strategies, in addition to readings in your text, read the following article paying particular attention to pages 588 to 593. Hewstone, M., Rubin, M., & Willis, H. (2002). Intergroup bias. Annual Review of Psychology, 53, 575-604.You are a counselor in a detention center for delinquent adolescent boys. Your current project is to devise a way to reduce intergroup conflict that has been escalating between the boys at the center, many of whom were active in local gangs.Discuss in detail the concepts that lead to the intergroup conflict, such as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. How have these attitudes and behaviors created and perpetuated the ongoing conflict?Discuss the different strategies to reduce intergroup conflict found in your text and the Hewstone article.Looking back at the course discuss 2 to 3 additional concepts that could be applied in helping a person overcome these negative attitudes and behaviors.Keeping these strategies and concepts in mind, what activities and/or programs can you create that will help these boys overcome this conflict and learn to work together, respect each other, and come to see each other’s differences as valuable. Briefly summarize each program/strategy in 2 to 3 sentences each in preparation for part 2 of this project.Answer the above points in a 3- to 4-page paper. Your paper should be double-spaced, typed in 12-point Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.Part 2:Create a 4- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation (not including title and reference slides) to present to the board of directors for the detention center that will cover the following:A detailed outline of each of the 3 to 4 programs/strategies that you would like to put into place at the center.Discuss for each program/strategy why you believe it will be effective within the context of your detention center.By Monday, December 15, 2014 deliver your assignment to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox.Assignment 1 Grading CriteriaMaximum PointsDiscusses the concepts that lead to the intergroup conflict and how behaviors created and perpetuated the ongoing conflict.44Discusses the different strategies to reduce intergroup conflict and cites relevant resources for the text and the Hewstone article.44Discusses 2 to 3 additional concepts that could be applied to overcoming the negative attitudes and behaviors.44Develops and summarizes 3 to 4 activities and/or programs that can be implemented.36Create a 4- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation (not including title and reference slides) to present to the board of directors for the detention center that will cover the following:A detailed outline of each of the 3 to 4 programs/strategies that you would like to put into place at the center.
