WEEK 1 DIS QUESTION

What is the relationship between language and cognition? This question is important for psychologists, linguists, and educators, as well as professionals from many other disciplines. For normally developing children, research shows that there is a typical development sequence in both language and cognitive development. For instance, most children learn how to make words plural before they learn how to use the past tense. Likewise, in cognitive development, younger children think more concretely before they develop the ability to reason and think abstractly.Theorists and researchers have established the parameters and documented many of the products of human language and cognitive development but are still working to determine how these developments occur and the precise relationship between language and cognition. Likewise, many researchers are exploring new areas related to atypical development and factors that may increase human capacity for language and cognition. For this Discussion, you are asked to share an area of language study about which you are interested in learning more and provide resources to your colleagues about the topics of interest they identified. To prepare:· Review the Learning Resources, including the media, and begin to consider what language is and how it develops in the human brain.· Select one topic from this week’s Learning Resources that you found interesting (e.g., communication development in infancy, the biological basis of language or cognition, social cognition). With these thoughts in mind:Post an explanation of the idea or concept that you selected and why you find it interesting or compelling. What about this idea or concept do you want to learn more about? Use terminology from the Learning Resources in your post.Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Use proper APA format and citations.RESOURCES FOR THIS WEEK’S QUESTION; Gleason, J. B., & Ratner, N. B. (2017). The development of language (9th ed.). ethical principles

In 2005, news reports disclosed that psychologists were involved in the torture of prisoners at military/CIA sites such as Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay. Sadly, this was not the first time that psychologists were involved in such practices—hired by the government for their psychological knowledge. Evaluate the role of psychologists in torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment? Be sure to include information concerning human rights, social justice, multicultural guidelines, and other relevant ethical principles.

2 PAGE Paper APA: PSYC 3004: Psychological Disorders- Advantages and Disadvantages of Diagnosis and Labeling

Clinicians make use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) classification system to make diagnoses that will guide the choice of a treatment approach. As you read in Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology, however, the practice of diagnosing clients and the use of diagnostic categories and labels are sometimes subject to criticism. Some argue that diagnostic labels can cause harm. Others disagree, stating that diagnosis is an essential step in the clinical process as the clinician proceeds from assessment to diagnosis to treatment. In this week’s Assignment, you will evaluate both advantages and disadvantages of the practice of diagnosing and labeling psychological disorders. You will decide whether or not you are convinced that current diagnostic practices are acceptable. The Assignment (2 pages):Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of diagnosing and classifying psychological disorders. Include in your evaluation responses to the following prompts:Evaluate the advantages of diagnosis and classification in mental health settings. Be specific and provide examples where appropriate.Evaluate the disadvantages of diagnosis and classification in mental health settings. Be specific and provide examples where appropriate. From a multicultural perspective, explain what issues might arise with respect to the assessment and diagnosis of individuals from different cultural backgroundsFinally, based on your evaluations in the prior prompts, explain your position regarding the relative advantages and disadvantages of current diagnostic and classification practices, including an assessment of whether you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or vice versa. Be sure to support your position.References must come from–R. J., & Comer, J. S. (2019). Fundamentals of abnormal psychology (9th ed.).
