Should the term “equality” apply to American citizens discriminatively? Should the law undermine its own citizens because of their likes and interests? A part of the American citizens is pro-gay marriages. The American constitution does not give a clear guideline on the definition of marriage. Thus, there have been suggestions for the amendments to take place. Several states, including Ohio, have collected signatures to change the definitions. Gay marriage in the United States should be legal because it will prevent discrimination, encourage tolerance, and allow gay couples the legal rights only afforded through marriage.

I know a man in my mother’s neighborhood that is constantly learning. He told me that education and learning for the sake of understanding are enough for him. He reads classical literature and philosophy as well as all of the latest books on political science and environmental concerns. His mind is filled with the words of some of the greatest scholars that have lived over the past 1500 years. He works at a neighborhood corner shop stocking shelves and running the cash register. When I asked him why he didn’t get a better job he replied that a more demanding job would interfere with his education and that he valued knowledge over money.

The superintendent that works in my apartment complex told me once that he never read anything he couldn’t apply to his job. If it was a manual on fixing trash disposal or direction on installing new lighting fixtures, then the reading was worth his time. He said that he really didn’t see the need for any education beyond the obvious needs of his career. Formal study beyond his career was a waste of time because it couldn’t earn him any money. Read a novel for enjoyment or enlightenment? Never. He’d rather play poker.

I list these examples of people I have in my life and their attitudes towards education to illustrate why I am so conflicted about education in many ways, specifically my education and how I should conduct it. I respect all of these people and see the good and bad in the choices they have made relative to their own education. Summarizing my feelings about education is difficult because of the disparate examples, but as I learn more about the world and the people in it, I can see one thing clearly. I can see that an individual’s approach to their education (whatever that may&nbsp.be) will be the greatest determinant of the level of happiness a person will experience in life and the number of choices one will have.

Financing, Liberal Arts, and Equity In all the states of America there are many schools that are truly dependent on the taxes from various local groups and one of the main issues we Americans are facing is the uneven distribution of all those taxes. If in future we will be able to solve this key issue then 80% of the financing problems of our schools will be solved. Moreover, in America the allocation of funds for primary and secondary education is only 7 %. This apportion should be more so that the field of education should get a slightly bigger share to accomplish its goals effectively. As per my five years of experience in this field of teaching, I have come across many challenges as a professor. One of them is finance definitely. In order to finance schools in America we can limit a share from everyone’s salary to be collected on the first of each month and delivered to the schools. It would work in this scenario that let us say there is a school in any location. We can gather a small amount from the people’s salary around there and submit it to the school in that location. Once we apply this practice, I am sure we can generate handsome money, each month for the improvement of the school. In my views the last one is the most optimum and easiest way to increase educational funding for all schools in America. Besides financial issues, I have also faced many problems while dealing with students and their parents. I must say that there is a proper mechanism that should aware students regarding liberal arts as well. The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” By Elizabeth Wong The competition in the world has increased and every human being wants a better and more secure future. The prospects for a better life style and a safe and sound future are the main attraction for immigration from one’s homeland to another country. Though it seems very simple but this process is associated with many difficulties that a person faces in relation the cultural variations. All generations have different responses to these. Chinese immigrants in the United States now constitute a good proportion of the minorities there and Elizabeth Wong was one of the children in these immigrant families. The story of her childhood presents with a picture of the hardships that she faced because of the cultural diversity and her reading presents with the different immigrant responses towards the new culture and language from different generations.

Elizabeth’s mother was a strong believer of the fact that her children should know about the language of their country where they truly came from. This can be understood from the fact when she forced her children to go to the Chinese school to learn Chinese even though they were not at all interested (Wong p. 41). The reason behind this can be her strong association and attachment with her motherland and that she wanted her children to be brought up in a similar manner as she was. Elizabeth’s grandmother also seemed to be proud of her language and did not feel any disgrace while speaking in it loudly in public places (Wong p. 42). This was the view of their generation towards their language and culture.

Elizabeth and her brother who belonged to the new generation and were being raised in United States wanted to be Americans. They did not like their Chinese lessons and they were very content with English and preferred it over Chinese. They were having a difficult time adjusting with the language of the country from where they came and preferred the language of the country where they being raised. They wanted to be like other children of their ages in their locality and play with them rather than going to learn Chinese (Wong p. 41). Elizabeth also exhibits her dislike for Chinese which according to her was a language without any sense and emotions. She believed that she could speak and coordinate in a better way in English than in Chinese (Wong p. 42).

Thus this shows a difference in concept of different generations towards language. The reading also signifies that this gap keeps on increasing with age. This can be seen from the fact that Elizabeth’s younger brother showed a stronger defiance than her towards his mother with relation to language as he kept on pointing out her mistakes when she spoke English (Wong p. 42). Their mother wanted her children to learn Chinese so that they could be associated and integrated with their previous country as well. Elizabeth, on the other hand wanted to be a true American because she believed that she belonged there (Wong p. 42). This was the reason why she wanted to only know English.
