1. Motivation arises from both internal motives (i.e. needs, cognitions, emotions) and external events (i.e. incentives, consequences, social contexts).  Is one of these sources of motivation more potent or more effective in motivating people than is the other?  Are people primarily motivated by internal motives or by external events, or are people motivated about equally by internal motives and external events? Justify your response by giving examples from your own life.

Selecting one physiological need (e.g. hunger, thirst, sex) as an example, explain, how the biological beginnings of this need eventually manifest themselves as a psychological drive in a person’s subjective awareness.  In other words, explain how a biological event becomes a psychological motive. Give an original example to support your explanation.

5.  Consider the origins of the need for achievement. Discuss and provide original examples from your own life, of each of the following three sources of high need for achievement:  its socialization influences, its cognitive influences, or its developmental influences.

6.  Differentiate the motivational and performance-based advantages versus disadvantages for performers who adopt a short-term goal (e.g., eat less than 2000 calories today) versus performers who adopt a long-term goal (e.g. lose 20 pounds this year) and offer a recommendation as to whether performers should adopt a short-term or a long-term goal. Explain/justify your recommendation.

Assignment: Analysis of Imagery: Evaluating an Artifact

Brushes and art supplies.Humans are art making creatures. From the evocative hunting depictions of our ancient ancestors to modern dance, humans have reacted to their environment by painting, singing, dancing, writing, and recording the things they encounter. In this week’s assignment, you will be asked to select an artifact to analyze. Make sure that you choose something that really resonates with you, but also make sure that you would not mind sharing it with the members of the class. Understand that this is an academic workspace, and select an image, poem, or song that you would be comfortable sending to the entire class. You are free to select any object that is shareable electronically with your classmates.

Evaluating a work of art requires some distance from the piece. You will be asked to analyze the artifact that you select and to describe why the piece was selected. Please choose something that you would not mind others critiquing. For example, if you select a painting that your sister painted, you might not want to have someone write that they didn’t like the subject or style. Make sure that you are comfortable with the piece being viewed and analyzed by other members of the class.

In this Assignment you will identify and analyze an artifact of your choice. The resources used in the Week 2 Notes and Readings are just a few of the options for types of media you might select as meaningful to you.

To prepare for the Assignment:

·         Select an artifact, something that is important to you or resonates with you in some way. Make certain you have a way to share the artifact electronically. You can save the website/link to the artifact if you found it online or take a photo or scan the artifact.

·         Use the Academic Writing Expectations (AWE) Checklist to guide your writing for each question on the worksheet. Even when you are filling in a worksheet, you should be considering the AWE guidelines.

Demonstrate an academic writing style through well-organized prose that follows assessment guidelines. Demonstrate compliance with APA style, citation, and referencing guidelines.

Preparation

Social Psychology Theory – Self-Serving Bias: The self-serving bias leads people to claim credit for success but deny blame for failure.

Behavioral Ethics Concept – Loss Aversion: We hate losses about twice as much as we enjoy gains, meaning we are more likely to act unethically to avoid a loss than to secure a gain. This phenomenon is known as loss aversion.

Option 1: In your opinion and based on scientific evidence, do you think scientific evidence supports a formalist view or a functionalist view on the relation between language and communication? That is, do you think that the need to communicate and/or the act of communication plays a role in the development of language form (i.e., syntax; morphology)?

What, if any, properties of children’s early communicative experience support their development of communicative skills and their development of language? How important is early communicative experience to later language development? Some argue that communication and early communicative experience is the primary driver or force behind later language development. That is, some theories explain language development as motivated by the urge to communicate. Others argue for a more moderate position saying that communicative interaction contributes to language development but is not the sole reason or purpose for language development. Both of these positions would be akin to the functionalist view of the relation between communication and language, that is, language is a system shaped and/or supported by the communicative functions it serves. Still, others argue for the formalist view of the relation between communication and language, that is, the structure and development of language has nothing to do with its communicative role. In your answer to the proposed question, you will want to consider whether you think there is evidence to link early communicative skill to later language development.
