Compare and Contrast the most significant influences to psychology in the areas of philosophy (Chapter 2) and physiology (Chapter 3).

Before the Assignment:

  3. Read the online article, Writing Essays by Dodd. ( http://psych.brookes.ac.uk/handbooks/essay-guidelines.pdf )

Instructions:

  1. Part of your reading this week includes the short online article, Writing Essays. Be sure that your essay follows the mechanics of writing that is discussed in the article. In order to earn maximum points for this assignment, do not forget that in writing a complete and coherent paper you need to include an introductory paragraph (thesis statement and main points) and a concluding paragraph (summarization of the topics, along with a strong concluding statement).
  2. Include the following in your paper:
  • Focus on only two theorists and only one of the theorist’s main concepts for each discipline: (a) philosophy and (b) physiology (total theorists = 4; total concepts = 4). In other words, do not try to summarize all the relevant concepts and theorists of philosophy and physiology.
    • Important Note: Whenever possible, do try to apply the theorists concepts to real world experiences.
    • Do interpret the concepts of the theorists in your own words.
    • Do not use in your paper “quoted material,” unless absolutely necessary, to the point you are making.

  • Briefly, discuss the Zeitgeist (intellectual climate of the times, i.e, social, cultural, religious, political, educational, cultural influencing factors upon the theorists worldview).

Additional Instructions:

  • Remember to keep your focus narrow when discussing the theorists, only discussing the most important points of their theories and/or concepts.

  • Times New Roman Font, 1 inch margins, double-spaced
  • You must include include citations from 2 sources in your textbook, both Chapters 2 & 3. If you use any additional outside sources you must cite these as well, however, additional sources is optional (i.e. journal articles, literature, videos).
  • Include both a title and reference page with your sources cited in your paper.

Describe Saks’s or McGough’s experiences with schizophrenia. Identify onset, associated features (specifically referencing the positive and negative symptoms), development, and course.

Experiences of schizophrenia are not homogeneous; there is wide variety in onset, course of illness, and combinations of symptoms. Social workers need to be able to understand the different manifestations and pathways of the illness to plan interventions. Social work services play a key role in stabilizing crises, supporting family coping, and influencing overall quality of life and outcomes of individuals with schizophrenia. In this Assignment, you practice applying this necessary individualization.

To prepare: In the Learning Resources, focus on the associated features, development, and course of the illnesses in the schizophrenia spectrum. Also focus on descriptions of the disorder and the way it develops for different individuals.

Choose two articles from the list in the Learning Resources that apply to treatment support and interventions for the schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders chapter in the DSM 5. Choose either Saks or McGough to focus on for this as

Submit a 3- to 4-page paper, supported by at least 4 scholarly resources (not including DSM-5), in which you address the following:

  1. Describe Saks’s or McGough’s experiences with schizophrenia. Identify onset, associated features (specifically referencing the positive and negative symptoms), development, and course.
  2. Explain how you would use the Clinician Rated Dimensions of Psychosis Symptom Severity measure and the WHODAS to help confirm your diagnosis.
  3. Explain how you would plan treatment and individualize it for Saks or McGough. Support your response with references to scholarly resources. In your explanation, consider the following questions:
  4. What are the long-term challenges for someone living with the illness?
  5. What social, family, vocational, and medical supports are needed for long-term stabilization?
  6. Briefly explain how race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, or other identity characteristics may influence an individual’s experience with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia Over Time: Experiences Living With the Illness

She’s tried several diets and still can’t lose weight!  She’s so upset that all she does is mope around the house all day. What can we do to help our daughter?”

Option 1 Childhood Obesity
Celine’s parents are concerned about their daughter’s weight. Although neither of her parents is overweight, 9-year-old Celine, whom they adopted two years ago, weighs about 30% more than the average girl of her age and height. “We just can’t understand it,” they lament. “She’s tried several diets and still can’t lose weight!  She’s so upset that all she does is mope around the house all day. What can we do to help our daughter?”

To advise Celine’s parents, you obviously need more information. Your task in this exercise is two-fold. First, generate a list of 10 questions you might ask to help pinpoint the cause(s) of Celine’s weight problem.  Each question should focus on a specific biological, social or behavioral influence that might cause obesity. Then, for each question, write a paragraph to explain how the answer will help determine the cause of Celine’s weight problem and another paragraph to show what you might recommend as a result.  Cite text or Internet resources you used to justify your questions, rationales and recommendations.   Do not forget a complete, appropriately formatted source list at the end of your paper.  To help you get started, one question is provided; you provide rationale and recommendation and source and then you add at least 9 more questions, reasons and recommendations.

Question #1 How many hours of television does Celine watch each day?

Based on the table, how      would you describe the changes in gun ownership in the United States over      the 40 years shown?

Provide a response to the following prompts.

1. Explain and provide an example for each of the following types of variables:

a. Nominal:

b. Ordinal:

c. Interval:

d. Ratio scale:

e. Continuous:

f. Discrete:

g. Quantitative:

2. The following are the speeds of 40 cars clocked by radar on a particular road in a 35 miles-per-hour zone on an afternoon:

30, 36, 42, 36, 30, 52, 36, 34, 36, 33, 30, 32, 35, 32, 37, 34, 36, 31, 35, 20

Create a frequency table and a histogram. Then, describe the general shape of the distribution.

3. Raskauskas and Stoltz (2007) asked a group of 84 adolescents about their involvement in traditional and electronic bullying. The researchers defined electronic bullying as “…a means of bullying in which peers use electronics {such as text messages, emails, and defaming Web sites} to taunt, threaten, harass, and/or intimidate a peer” (p. 565). The table below is a frequency table showing the adolescents’ reported incidence of being victims or perpetrators or traditional and electronic bullying.

a. Using the table below as an example, explain the idea of a frequency table to a person who has never taken a course in statistics.

b. Explain the general meaning of the pattern of results.

5. Regarding gun ownership in the United States, data from Gallup polls over a 40-year period show how gun ownership in the United States has changed. The results are described below, with the percentage of Americans who own guns given in each of the 5 decades.

Year %

1972 43

  1. Are the percentages      reported above an example of descriptive statistics or inferential      statistics? Why?
  2. Based on the table, how      would you describe the changes in gun ownership in the United States over      the 40 years shown?

6. Refer to the Simpson-Southward et al. (2016) article from this week’s Electronic Reserve Readings. Was this an example of inferential statistics and research or descriptive statistics and research? Justify your response.

7. Explain and provide an example for each of the following shapes of frequency distributions.
