Effective clinical innovations and the dissemination of research findings are key elements in the growth and development of the psychology profession. There are numerous avenues that enable authors to publish and present their work. Poster presentations at conferences are effective methods for communicating research findings and providing opportunities to meet with other researchers and clinicians to discuss the research being presented. Thus, these types of conference presentations play a key role in the proliferation of research.

In this week’s discussion, you will be submitting your proposal for the Week Five Virtual Conference. You may utilize relevant assignments from previous courses in this program or suitable projects from your professional life. See the PSY699 Call for Student Poster Presentations document for specific parameters and instructions on how to create your proposal. Following the guidelines presented in the document, create your proposal and attach it to your initial post in the discussion forum. Evaluate the impact participating in conference presentations may have on potential work settings and/or doctoral programs and comment on the following questions in your initial post.

We invite you to submit a proposal for the Virtual Conference that will occur in Week Five of this course. The Virtual Conference is designed to bring the class together to review and evaluate poster presentations of technical, professional, and/or scientific interest to psychology professionals.

To submit your poster proposal, include the following information in a document attached to your initial post.

The abstract should concisely explain the purpose and content of the poster. Abstracts for empirical studies, literature reviews, and meta-analyses should include the following sections: Objectives, Method, Results, Conclusions, and Implications. Abstracts for case studies, theoretical and methodological studies, and other projects should include the following sections: Purpose, Description, Assessment, and Conclusions.

The poster proposal must represent your original work. Work already published in another conference or journal will not be accepted. Please see the instructions for the Week Five Virtual Poster Conference Discussion for the Poster Submission Guidelines in order to prepare your poster for presentation.

Read the Case Study for “Johnny” and review/score the DSM-5 Parent/Guardian-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure—Child Age 6–17 form completed by the mother (attached). Consider the following when reviewing the form:

  2. What will you do next—based on the information from the Level 1 Measure?

Utilize the DSM-5 Parent/Guardian-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure—Child Age 6–17 measure to differentiate between issues associated with typical childhood behaviors and clinically-significant psychiatric phenomena (psychopathology). The news is rife with stories of corporations and other organizations breaching contracts, both written and unwritten, with employees. Business leaders may behave unethically but expect absolute honesty and high performance from subordinates. Companies may limit work hours or vacation days and other benefits while increasing workloads. Despite clearly defined ethical codes, guidelines, and mission statements that promote ethical and fair treatment of employees, many organizational leaders commit ethics violations that, in turn, affect employee motivation.

In general, perceptions of fairness and justice can have a powerful impact on employee work motivation. According to Colquitt, Wesson, Porter, Conlon, and Ng (2001), employees’ subjective perceptions of justice in organizational settings are classified into the following four types:

  • Distributive justice relates to the fairness of outcome distributions.
  • Procedural justice relates to employee perceptions of the fairness behind the processes of distribution.
  • Informational justice describes the extent to which decisions that affect employees are accurately communicated.
  • Interactional justice relates to whether employees perceive that they have been given a fair voice in decision making.

To prepare:

  • Using the Walden Library, the Internet, and other news sources, research and select an organization that has been cited for either an ethics or a justice violation (Wells Fargo– articles attached)

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the (Wells Fargo)organization that you selected and the ethics or justice violation associated with the organization. Then, describe two factors that might have contributed to the ethics or justice violation. Choose which of these you believe the primary factor is and explain why. Then, explain how this primary factor might have influenced employee motivation.

Explain how you might address issues related to sexism in the mass media and diverse cultural beliefs about gender and gender roles in your social work practice. 

Many marketing efforts perpetuate the gender stereotypes that are steeped in our culture. Two examples at attempts to maintain these stereotypes through advertising are the Bic Critsal For Her and the Easy Bake Oven. These two conceivably innocuous items triggered a flood of articles, petitions, and videos, denouncing their perceived underlying messages.

The first controversy that erupted surrounded the Bic Cristal For Her pen. This pen was created and packaged specifically for women to use. Several groups lashed out at Bic, calling their attempt to target women with “lady pens” sexist and demeaning. Its detractors felt the campaign was degrading and fed into stereotypes by highlighting the thin design and the use of pastel colors. The negative press was overwhelming, although the pens have remained on the market.

Consumers also targeted those responsible for marketing the Easy Bake Oven by sending a petition asking its parent company Hasbro to make the ovens in colors other than pink and purple. Thousands of individuals signed the petition asking for alternative oven colors after a teenage girl from New Jersey was angered that her younger brother would have no other option but to use an oven in the colors that are considered stereotypically female. It was argued that the colors supported the stereotypical view that only young girls would want to bake. The signers of the petition felt that young boys who might want to use the toy would be more likely to practice their baking skills if the color of the oven was gender neutral.

Consider these two stories and think about your own reactions to the responses to the advertising and merchandising of these items.

  • Identify specific messages about gender presented in the mass media.
  • Discuss messages about gender you have received from your family or cultural group.
  • Analyze how these messages have influenced your experience with gender.
  • Explain how you might address issues related to sexism in the mass media and diverse cultural beliefs about gender and gender roles in your social work practice.
