Explain the findings of the article and how the research article results match or were different from what you expected to find.

As a counselor, you have the potential to work with a variety of client populations and mental health issues. Even the most seasoned clinicians have an ethical responsibility to stay abreast of the most current trends in the field. A great source of information is professional counseling literature. It gives you access to up to date empirical evidence and treatment options.

For this Discussion, you will make your first effort to review a peer-reviewed, scholarly article and consider how the information can help you shape the course of treatment for an identified client.

To Prepare

  • Review the four Final Project Case Studies found in the Learning Resources for this week and select a case study for this Discussion based on your counseling specialization You will have the option to use the same case study for your final project or choose a different one.
  • Choose one client in the case study and one mental health issue that you would address in counseling.
  • Choose one intervention you are interested in learning more about to work with the issues you identified in the case study you selected.
  • Review the Learning Resources related to research and how to search the Walden Library for specific information related to your topic.
  • Search the Walden Library and select one article specific to an intervention for your case study. Note: You will use this article to create a citation in your post as well as a reference for the article.

Post by Day 3

  • The case study you selected, the client and mental health issue you identified, and the intervention you selected for treating the issue in counseling.
  • Explain the findings of the article and how the research article results match or were different from what you expected to find.
  • Did your findings change your perception about the intervention?
  • Would you choose to use this intervention with your client in the case study based on the contents of the article?
  • Cite content from the article you identified to support your post. Also, include a reference for this article in your post.
  • Attach a PDF of the article to your post .

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and identify current relevant literature to support your work.

Utilize at least one scholarly source as a basis for the evidence you will use to rationalize the decision-making process. All sources must be documented in APA style, as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.

Prior to completing this assignment, read the Ashford University Institutional Outcomes located on the Syllabus page for this course. Additionally, read the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Program Outcomes (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (pg. 248) located within the Online Undergraduate Programs section of the Ashford University 2013-2014 Academic Catalog.

After reviewing the information provided above, you will create a two- to three-page case study focusing on professional and personal scenarios (they can be real or hypothetical) in which you evaluate your learning as it contributes to the overall attainment of Ashford University’s institutional outcomes and the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program outcomes.

In the body of your paper:

  1. Discuss the Ashford University institutional outcomes and the program outcomes by identifying their relevance to a profession in psychology.
  2. Create one personal life example and one career example in which you (or a fictitious person) struggle with personal challenges and an ethical dilemma (e.g., a client or research subject reveals compromising information about a friend or family member who also happens to be someone you know in a personal/social context).
  3. After identifying the problem, include a section wherein you address each of the following prior to making a decision about a course of action:
    • From your point of view, what is the problem?
    • From the point of view of other individuals, what is the problem?
    • What are the options? What are potential consequences of the options?
    • What are the risks of each potential solution?
    • What are the risks of not resolving the challenges effectively?
    • What evidence/data do you have to assist you in decision making?
  4. Apply the competencies gained at Ashford University (from the institutional and program outcomes) to identify the preferred resolutions to the situations you identified in #2 above. Select at least three competencies that are most relevant to your scenarios. Be specific in your discussion of the scenarios and provide details demonstrating professional problem solving in your case study.
  5. Conclude the case study with how you resolved the problem (the outcome) and what you learned while at Ashford University that assisted you in deciding on an effective resolution. You may also identify additional competencies used to resolve the problem that are not included in the institutional and program outcomes.
  6. Utilize at least one scholarly source as a basis for the evidence you will use to rationalize the decision-making process. All sources must be documented in APA style, as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.

    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  3. Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  4. Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

How did your analysis compare and contrast with your peers’? Did they see something you did not? What insights can you bring to their thinking?

You have reviewed some of the principles and standards provided on the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct Web page, as well as an overview of some of the ethical concerns specific to the practice of psychotherapy and research. When there may be no easy answers to ethical issues, ethical standards can provide a decision-making framework for psychologists.

Ethical Dilemma

Jane is a licensed psychologist in private practice. In addition to her private therapy practice, she has been working as an instructor at a local college. She enjoys teaching and sharing her expertise with her students.

On the first evening of the Introduction to Psychology course she is teaching, she is surprised to see Carlene, a former client. After two years, Carlene had abruptly ended her therapy sessions approximately six months earlier.

When Jane sees Carlene in class, she does not acknowledge knowing Carlene, doing so to protect her former client’s privacy. She treats her no differently than any other member of the class. After class, Jane wonders if she should talk to Carlene or talk to the chair of the psychology department to decide whether or not Carlene should continue in her course. She decides not to talk to the chair or Carlene and hopes for the best.

Carlene is excited to see that her former therapist is her teacher. It helps her to feel comfortable in the class, and she hopes that it might also give her a special place in the class because she knows the teacher. However, Carlene is confused about why Jane does not acknowledge her. When Carlene receives her first assignment grade, she is surprised by how low it is. She is upset with Jane, believing she has not treated her with the special considerations that she believes she deserves because of their therapy work.

Jane notices that Carlene, who at first participated actively in class, now appears to be withdrawn and not engaged in class discussions.

Think about the APA guiding principles or standards that would have helped Jane know what to do in this situation. Describe how these principles or standards are applicable.

To help guide you in your discussion and support your thinking on the areas of ethical concern, use the APA’s “Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct” and the chapter by Nagy, “Thinking Critically About Ethics” from this unit’s studies.

Your post to the discussion dilemma should include the following:

  • A description of at least two potential ethical dilemmas for Jane in this situation.
  • Arguments to support your position (case information and APA ethical principles and standards).
  • Evidence (information from APA ethical principles and standards or other professional sources) to support your arguments.

Response Guidelines

  • After posting your main post, be sure to respond to at least two learners’ posts during the week. Please note that to earn full credit for your discussion, you must participate on two separate days and post a minimum of one reply on each of those two days. Comment on themes raised in the posts of other learners, and pose questions to move the discussion forward.
  • How did your analysis compare and contrast with your peers’? Did they see something you did not? What insights can you bring to their thinking?

research paper

Instructions for Your Research Paper

1.   Your paper should be no longer than 10 full pages, including footnotes. It is harder to write a 10-page paper than it is to write a 15- or 20-page paper. You must be clear and avoid the filler that is often in longer papers. What is filler? Filler is extra “stuff” that just fills pages but adds little or no value to your paper.

2.   Introduction

3.   Thesis Statement: Immediately after your introduction, you should present a clear thesis statement. In simplistic terms, a thesis statement is the main point of your paper that tells the reader what you intend to argue later in your paper. Your thesis should take a position on a debatable topic. The thesis statement should not be longer than two sentences, and normally one is sufficient.

4.   Road Map: Immediately after your thesis statement, provide a clear road-map to let the reader know where you are going with your paper. For example:  “My paper will first briefly explore . . . , followed by . . . .  Finally, I will defend my thesis by . . . .“   (And please be sure that your paper has a logical structure. The best way to do this is to outline it before you start to write it.)

5.   Background: Next, provide a brief but clear background of your topic.

6.   Argument/Defending Your Thesis: Defending your thesis should be the meat of your paper. It is where you should focus your time and energy. Conclusory statements must be supported with research or analysis. I also suggest that you explain the arguments that proponents of the majority’s position or status quo use to support their position and then explain why it is wrong and your position is right. (Did they miss something? Misinterpret something? Overlook critical results or statistics?)

7.  Conclusion:  Pull your points together to draw a conclusion for your reader.

Finally, a few other points:

Formatting:  Double-space your paper and use a 12 point font of your choice. Do not include a title page, abstract, endnotes, or bibliography/reference page.
