“Confidence intervals are underutilized” and explain what the implications might be of using or not using confidence intervals.

The Importance of Relationships

As its name implies, confidence intervals provide a range of values, along with a level of confidence, to serve as an estimate of some unknown population value. Since it is rare to have access to the entire population, you must frequently rely on the confidence interval of the sample to make some inference about the population of interest. Before making accurate inferences to the population, we need to fully understand how the three key components of the interval—variability in the data, sample size, and confidence level—impact the width of the interval.

For this Discussion, you will explore the relationship between these components and understand the trade-off between reducing risk in our confidence of estimates and increasing precision.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapters 7 and 8 of the Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero text and in Chapter 8, p. 256, consider the 2012 Benghazi Terrorist Attack Investigation and focus on how different levels of confidence and sample size work together.
  • Review Magnusson’s web blog found in the Learning Resources to further your visualization and understanding of confidence intervals.
  • Use the Course Guide and Assignment Help found in this week’s Learning Resources to search for a quantitative article related to confidence intervals.
  • Using the SPSS software, General Social Survey dataset and choose a quantitative variable that interests you.

By Day 3

Using SPSS:

  1. Take a random sample of 100.
  2. Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the variable.
  3. Calculate a 90% confidence interval.
  4. Take another random sample of 400.
  5. Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the variable.
  6. Calculate a 90% confidence interval.

Post your results and an explanation of how different levels of confidence and sample size affect the width of the confidence interval. Next, consider the statement, “Confidence intervals are underutilized” and explain what the implications might be of using or not using confidence intervals. Provide examples based on the results of your data. Also, use your research to support your findings.

What theories/concepts from the lesson material can help parents, caregivers, and/or professionals better understand the issue?

A local social service agency has asked you to create a pamphlet or PowerPoint Presentation to educate the community about an issue related to Child Development. Using research in the lesson material as your main source, plus at least two additional resources, put together an informational guide about any issue from the lesson material that has to do with Child Development. Some examples are teen pregnancy, challenges and tips for parents during a stage of development, (prenatal, infancy and toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, or adolescence), peer pressure, kids and social media, children with special needs, etc.

Prepare a pamphlet or PowerPoint that covers the following:

  • Start off by introducing the issue. Give a brief summary about it that includes facts, statistics, etc.
  • Who is affected by the issue and how?
  • What theories/concepts from the lesson material can help parents, caregivers, and/or professionals better understand the issue?
  • What can parents, peers, and/or professionals do to help with this issue?
  • What resources are available in your community to assist with this issue? If you can’t find anything locally, broaden your search to state and national services. Share at least 2 resources that offer help for the issue. Make sure to include the name of the agency, a summary of the services they provide, and contact information.
  • Provide a brief conclusion of your presentation or informational pamphlet.
  • Provide a summary for your instructor. You may share what you learned by completing this assignment, any challenges you faced, any information you didn’t agree with, and/or any other relevant information you’d like to share.

If you make a pamphlet it should be 1-2 pages in length. While graphics are appreciated, they shouldn’t be your focus. Your pamphlet needs to clearly cover the required material.

If you make a PowerPoint it should be 10 slides minimum (not including a Title and Reference slide) and include notes at the bottom to clearly explain the bullet points.

Do NOT copy the information from your sources. You must summarize the information and provide citations in the body of your presentation/pamphlet in APA format.  Your project will automatically be submitted to turnitin.com. You and your instructor will receive the results. If you need help with turnitin.com please see the information posted in the Announcements.

Describe a case example of group behavior that resulted in a negative outcome (for example, hazing or bullying) in a community or social service setting. Explain the rationale for selecting this group and setting.

Group Behavior Case Study

You learned that group behavior can influence human behavior and society as a whole. You will now have an opportunity to apply your understanding of the dimensions and theoretical perspectives that influence human behavior and identify services that promote healthy functioning. In this assignment, you will generate a case study on group behavior that resulted in a negative outcome. You will then create a report applying two behavioral theories and provide recommendations for effective behavioral strategies or other services.

Tasks:

In an 8- to 10-page paper:

  • Describe a case example of group behavior that resulted in a negative outcome (for example, hazing or bullying) in a community or social service setting. Explain the rationale for selecting this group and setting.
  • Identify a minimum of two behavior models and theories that apply to the example and highlight the manner in which the setting influences the behavioral outcomes. Justify your chosen models and theories.
  • Recommend specific effective behavioral strategies and services that can improve healthy functioning of the group.

Submission Details:

  • By the due date assigned, prepare an 8- to 10-page analysis paper. Your response should rely upon at least three sources from professional literature. This may include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov). Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources (i.e., APA format); and use accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Save your paper in a Microsoft Word document with the name M5_A2_LastName_FirstInitial.doc, and upload it to the Submissions Area.

This RA 2 is worth 300 points and will be graded according to the following rubric.

Review Chapter 6 in the course text, Gender: Psychological Perspectives. Focus on how different factors influence gender identity.

Discussion: Gender Identity Analysis

Males typically identify with the male gender and females with the feminine gender. The question for many researchers today and for this Discussion is: How does this gender identification occur? How do individuals come to identify with and accept themselves as either one gender or the other? This concept is termed gender identity in psychology.

There are two terms associated with gender identity that are important to highlight: gender stability and gender consistency. Gender stability means that gender is a stable personal characteristic and does not change with age or the situation or the environment. Gender consistency means that you identify with your gender regardless of how you are behaving. If you are a male and put on a pink dress, you show gender consistency if you still identify with being male, even though you are behaving like a female.

In this Discussion, you will explore some of the significant factors that influence gender identity and how these influencing factors impact society as a whole.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 6 in the course text, Gender: Psychological Perspectives. Focus on how different factors influence gender identity. Read “Demographic and Psychosocial Factors Associated With Psychological Distress and Resilience Among TransgenderIndividuals” and “Cross-Cultural Analysis of Gender Roles: Indian and US Advertisements.”
  • Watch a few different TV shows, sitcoms, commercials, or news reports. Also, look at a popular magazine and peruse the ads. Think about how these media sources 1) influence and or reinforce gender identity and 2) play a part in influencing gender bias. Focus on specific examples.
  • Using yourself or your child (or someone else’s child with whom you are close), think about the most important influential factors on gender identity, including biological, environmental, family, peer group, and cultural.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post your thoughts on how biology, environment, culture, family, peer group, and the media impact gender identity in the United States. Briefly describe how this influence on gender identity is accomplished. Then, describe the reasons individuals may experience gender dysphoria. Finally, provide some examples for how you think that society can best support the transgendered community. Be sure to support your examples with evidence from your research.
