Evaluate the literature review and describe whether or not it provides multiple perspectives and or results on the topic, or if the author is including only those studies that prove his or her original hypothesis

Week 1 – Assignment 2

Topic for the Final Research Proposal

For this assignment, you will apply the first step of the scientific method by identifying a topic and explaining its importance in the field of psychology. Choose a topic of interest to you in psychology that is relevant to your current or future career, and search the databases in the Ashford University Library for a published peer-reviewed literature review on the topic. Evaluate the literature review and describe whether or not it provides multiple perspectives and or results on the topic, or if the author is including only those studies that prove his or her original hypothesis. Using the literature review as a reference, compare the characteristics of the different research methods that have been used to study this topic. Summarize what is known about the topic based on the evidence presented in the literature review.

The paper

  • Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use at least one peer-reviewed source.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate reference page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Critique your colleague’s strategy for applying social and emotional intelligence to the case of Andres. Provide support for your critique.

By Day 3

Post an explanation of the effects of the social welfare policies presented in the case study you selected on Luisa or Tessa. Be specific and reference the case study you selected in your post. Finally, explain how policies affect social agencies and how social workers work with clients, such as Tessa or Luisa.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

By Day 5

Read a selection of your colleagues’ posts.

Respond to at least two colleagues who chose a different case from the one you selected by explaining a proactive approach you might develop for a social policy that addresses the problem facing the client in the case your colleagues selected. Explain the steps you think the social work profession can take in ensuring that problems are defined so that oppressed and marginalized groups are represented.

By Day 3

Post a Discussion that includes the following:

  • An explanation of how social and emotional intelligence are related to cultural factors
  • An explanation about how you, as a social worker, might apply the concepts of emotional and/or social intelligence to the case of Andres
  • An explanation of how social workers, in general, might apply social and emotional intelligence to social work practice. (Include a specific example in the explanation.)

By Day 5

Read a selection of your colleagues’ posts.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

This benchmark assignment assesses the following programmatic competencies: 2.1: Apply research design principles to investigate psychological hypotheses and 2.4: Interpret psychological phenomena using sound scientific reasoning.

In 7-10 slides, not including the title and reference slide, outline your research proposal to present to your classmates. Your PowerPoint will need to include:

  1. Introductory section: Including your problem statement and your hypothesis.
  2. Methodology section: Including your description of the participants, apparatus/materials/instruments, procedure, and design you anticipate using.
  3. Reference slide with APA-formatted reference entries.

Be prepared to present your proposal information to your colleagues. You may have heard the brain teaser, sometimes a favorite among philosophers, “If a tree falls in the forest, and there is no one (and no animal) there to hear it, was there a sound?”

Your task in this conference topic is to answer this question after having read the lecture on General Principles of Sensory Systems, giving support for your answer based upon what you have learned about the nature of sound, about sensory processes, and about the role of brain systems in sensation and perception. 5-10 well organized sentences should suffice (you must read my lectures in this week’s Discussion in order to understand the correct answer to this question; “common sense” won’t work here because it is wrong). Read and respond to at least two of the responses posted by your classmates.

CAUTION: Be sure to consult the lectures in this conference (and the textbook) to help guide the formulation of your answer.

Identify at least two strengths and at least two weaknesses of the assessment that you discuss based on your research. (Remember to cite your sources.)

Assessment in the Workplace

W2_D1.jpgAfter reading Chapters 3 and 4 in your text, the article, “Self-Assessment and Dialogue as Tools for Appreciating Diversity”, and watching the required videos, consider the following: Testing and assessment are critical components of selection, recruitment, and the training and development processes in any business or organization. Organizations approach assessments in a multitude of ways.

  • Research one of the following evaluative protocols (based on your first name) that might be used by an I/O psychologist or manager to assess an employee’s performance.
    • A through G: A peer evaluation
    • H through R: An observational evaluation
    • S through U: A subordinate evaluation
    • V through Z: A 360° appraisal

  • Describe the assessment/evaluation you have been assigned.
    • Apply appropriate citations which may include your text, required article and videos, website sources, and additional peer-reviewed articles.
  • Explain what the goal is of your assigned assessment/evaluation method.
  • Analyze the possibility of bias in your assigned assessment/evaluation method.
    • Does your assessment suggest the potential of possible bias? Why?
  • Describe the potential effects your assessment/evaluation method might have on the workplace (good and bad).
  • Identify at least two strengths and at least two weaknesses of the assessment that you discuss based on your research. (Remember to cite your sources.)

Your initial post should be between 300 and 350 words. You must use at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed source that was published within the past five years. Cite all information from your sources according to APA guidelines as outlined in the In-Text Citation Helper: A Guide to Making APA In-Text Citations (Links to an external site.). List each of your sources at the end of your post according to APA style as shown in the sample page for References (Links to an external site.).

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts. Respond substantively to at least two of your peers (original postings) who were assigned a different assessment protocol.

  • Discuss how your peer(s)’ assessment/evaluation tool differed from yours.
  • Does yours’ or your peer’s assessment promote more unbiased results?
  • Would you rather utilize your peer’s chosen assessment or the one you located, when performing an evaluation? When being evaluated? Why?
  • Continue to monitor this discussion board through 5 PM (Mountain Time) on Day 7 of the week.
  • Be sure to also respond to your instructor’s comments to you in this forum by Day 7 (when applicable).
