What are      three controversies discussed in the Halter, Rolin-Kenny, & Dzurec      (2013) article? Give your opinions about these controversies.  From      your point view, are these legitimate concerns? Why or why not?

Assignment 1 – 300 word

There are very different views of what types of evidence are most credible in evaluating the effectiveness of psychological treatment research. In this discussion you will analyze basic applied psychological research as well as evaluate how researchers applied a research process in the development of specific components. To begin, read the following articles (which can be accessed through the ProQuest database in the Ashford University Library):

  • “Evidence-Based      Practice in Psychology: Implications for Research and Research Training”
  • “Practice-Based      Evidence: Back to the Future”
  • “Psychological      Treatments: Putting Evidence into Practice and Practice into Evidence”

After reading the articles listed above, select two of them.  Analyze the basic applied research within each of your two selected articles by answering the following questions:

  • What is      the main point-of-view in each article?
  • What are      the primary assumptions each author makes?
  • Which      author are you inclined to agree with?  Support your choice with      scholarly reasoning and cite your evidence.

You are required to include one peer-reviewed source that was published within the last five years to support your perspective.  You may not use any of the sources that were assigned for this course.

Assignment 2 – 300 words

In this discussion you will be evaluating contributions of psychological research in the applied context of the DSM-5. To begin, read the DSM-5 section entitled, “Conditions for Further Study” (Section III of the DSM-5) and the article titled  “An Overview of the DSM-5: Changes,Controversy, and Implications for Psychiatric Nursing.”
Then, address the following points in your post:

  • What are      three controversies discussed in the Halter, Rolin-Kenny, & Dzurec      (2013) article? Give your opinions about these controversies.  From      your point view, are these legitimate concerns? Why or why not?
  • Name a      disorder identified as requiring significantly more research and study      from the DSM-5 section entitled,      “Conditions for Further Study” (Section III of the DSM-5). Construct a research question that is pertinent to the      disorder you selected.
  • Briefly      outline a research method that could be used to investigate the disorder      based on one of the research methods presented in your textbook.

Provide a review of the articles you reviewed from this project and explain what you learned from conducting this research.

Final Project

Once you graduate and obtain your first job out of your Master of Social Work program, you may be asked to identify the gaps in services at your new agency. You may be asked to create a new group or help to identify a new evidence-based intervention that can be introduced to the clients. Understanding how to research the current literature, and then choose and evaluate an intervention, is an important component of being a successful social worker. For this course, you have researched new and interesting interventions that are currently being used with children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Further, you have explored the importance of connecting theory to practice.

For this Assignment, use will practice steps in Evidence-Based Practice. 1) You will think of a practice problem. 2) You then conduct a literature review on available research. 3) You will evaluate the evidence to determine which intervention to use. 4) You will consider client values and your clinical expertise. 5) You will think about what you hope the client gains from this intervention (i.e., decreased depression, increased quality of life, decreased PTSD symptoms) and consider how you might measure this change.

To prepare:

  • Choose a population of interest to you.
    • Children
    • Adolescents
    • Adults
    • Elderly/Aging
  • Choose a presenting problem (depression, family conflict, homelessness, etc.) related to the population of interest.
  • Conduct a literature review focused on the presenting problem within the population of interest.
By Day 7

Submit an 8- to 10-page scholarly paper supported with a minimum of six peer-reviewed articles as references. In the paper, you should:

  • Briefly describe the population and presenting problem you are focusing on for this assignment.
  • Provide a review of the articles you reviewed from this project and explain what you learned from conducting this research.
  • Briefly describe at least 2 evidence-based interventions currently used for your chosen population when addressing this particular problem. Provide supporting references when explaining the evidence behind the interventions.
  • Explain which of these interventions you might choose to use and why.
    • Consider client values and your clinical expertise and how those might affect your decision of which intervention to use.
  • Describe how you might apply the specific skills and techniques of the chosen intervention.
  • Briefly explain how you could measure the outcomes of this intervention.
  • Explain any cultural considerations that you need to take into account when working with this population or the particular presenting problem.
  • Discuss how the Code of Ethics applies when working with this particular presenting problem and population.
  • Explain how you would apply a trauma-informed lens when working with this population.

Support your Final Project with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

The Final Project will be evaluated according to the Final Project Rubric, located below and in the Course Information area.

Discuss how an understanding of these disorders could support you in a career, prior to achieving expertise in a graduate program, by addressing the following:

Ethics, Subjectivity, and the Art of Diagnosis

[WLO: 8] [CLOs: 4, 6]

Although psychology prides itself on being a science, the art of diagnosis goes beyond a simple checklist of symptoms. Clinicians generally recognize that any diagnostic exercise must include a culturally sensitive interpretation and analysis of symptoms. Considering that only a bachelor’s degree in psychology does not prepare you to do diagnosis, it is important to consider how having this knowledge could support you in other careers. It is also important to consider that even a doctorate in psychology does not license you to treat with prescription medicine. To perform this level of diagnosis and treatment, you would have to earn a medical degree in psychiatry. To learn more, read the article Psychology vs. Psychiatry: Do You Know the Difference? (Links to an external site.)

To successfully complete this journal,

  • Identify at least three disorders that you studied during this course and summarize what the disorders entail.
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Dementia
  • Separation anxiety disorder
  • Discuss how an understanding of these disorders could support you in a career, prior to achieving expertise in a graduate program, by addressing the following:
    • Consider the knowledge application to working with others in a team setting or working with families, etcetera.
    • Relate this to the career you have now or one you wish to obtain after earning your bachelor’s degree. Current career: Eyecare Exam Tech/…..wish to obtain social worker for CPS (child protective services)
    • If you do not plan on gaining employment after graduation, how could this understanding support you in your personal and social contexts?
  • Analyze the rationales, including the ethical considerations that exist for becoming more educated prior to personally performing diagnosis.

Your journal, this week, should be between 400 to 500 words and have an introduction and a conclusion as described in the Ashford University Writing Center’s resource Introductions & Conclusions (Links to an external site.). You should exhibit obvious attention to critical thought and understanding of the content, as demonstrated in Samantha Agoos’s TED-Ed animation 5 Tips to Improve Your Critical Thinking (Links to an external site.). You should include APA citations (Links to an external site.) as needed to support your ideas. As this is your personal reflection about the material this week, your journal should limit the use of quoted material. Proper grammar should be applied, for which you should consider using the Ashford Writing Center’s Grammarly: A Free Proofreading Tool (Links to an external site.) resource. At minimum cite your text to support your assertions in your explanation, but you may also use additional scholarly sources. The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. References should be listed following the reflection. You will have until 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 (Monday) to deliver this journal reflection.
