  • ItemCheating PolicyACADEMIC DISHONESTY
The Student Code of Conduct prohibits academic dishonesty and prescribes penalties for violations. According to this code, which is printed in the college catalogue, “academic dishonesty”, includes (but is not limited to) “cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and collusion”.
Any cutting and pasting you do without crediting the source will result in penalties appropriate to the offense—such a zero on the paper and/or failing the class. Plagiarized papers do not get a second chance in this class. Thus: Anyone who cuts and pastes should be VERY careful to give credit for even the most minor amount. If you didn’t write it yourself but took material from anyone else, even an encyclopedia, medical database, The New Yorker magazine or a friend or even your grandmother’s insights shared over dinner, you need to credit it properly.Academic dishonesty on this or any assignment WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO ON THE ASSIGNMENT WITH NO CHANCE TO MAKE UP THE GRADE. NO EXCEPTIONS. PERIOD.

  • ItemReflection Paper Topics with Grading RubricYou will write a 1000-1500 word response to your chosen paper topic from the list below. See Course Outline for the due date.
This assignment is worth 300 points, or 30% of your grade.
DO NOT USE ANY SOURCES OTHER THAN THE DALRYMPLE ARTICLE AND YOUR TEXTBOOK.
YOU WILL ATTACH A FILE IN THE BOX AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.
    Learning Objectives:
Students will demonstrate their ability to construct arguments about issues of both personal and universal significance. Their writing should demonstrate that they can construct cogent, concise, and logically coherent arguments.
    Assessment:
Students should demonstrate that they can distinguish the relevant points that form a logically coherent argument. They should also be able to construct criticisms which effectively undermine, through the use of appropriate counter-examples, some premise of that argument. Your assignment is to read any ONE of the following four articles:
The Frivolity of EvilHow and How Not to Love Mankind

    What We Have to Lose

    Roads to Serfdom

Then, FOR THE ARTICLE YOU CHOOSE TO WRITE ON, you will type a 1000-1500 word response in which you address EACH of the following points IN YOUR OWN WORDS: 1) What is the author’s main argument? 2) How does he support his main argument (evidence, ancillary arguments, etc.)? 3) Do you agree or disagree with him? 4) Why or why not? 5) Apply the insights of at least two of the readings we have studied in this course (in chapters 1-9) to your analysis. Make sure to give a substantive explanation of how the philosophers’ insights are relevant to the topic you are discussing.
A WORD OF WARNING: These articles are rather long and complex. The author likes to make extensive use of his rather copious vocabulary, so I strongly urge you to have dictionary.com handy as you work your way through your chosen article. The purpose of this essay assignment is for you to demonstrate your ability to discuss, analyze, and evaluate complex philosophic arguments. I am confident that the reading assignments, tests, and discussion boards will have prepared you for this final, and no doubt challenging, essay assignment.
Note: I only allow one attempt on this assignment. Students who do not fully address all of the components of the assignment as stated in the instructions as well as the grading rubric below will have to be content with the grade they earned.
    Please use MLA format.
Your paper will be graded according to the following rubric:
    Grading Rubric:
The following standards are numbered in order of importance for grading.
1.Essay demonstrates an understanding of the material: The student has correctly grasped a philosophical problem or question, has explained it accurately, and on the basis of a substantially correct interpretation of any texts involved. Key terms are used correctly. The essay shows evidence of the student’s independent thought, and is written in his or her distinctive voice. Short (one sentence) quotations are used (comprising no more than 10% of the body of the paper), when appropriate, to support the writer’s analysis, and an explanation is offered for each quotation. The use of block quotations will result in a severe point deduction.
    95 points
2.Essay has clear and coherent argument: There is a clearly stated thesis, and support for this thesis in the body of the paper. Each paragraph contributes to this argument, and follows logically from the paragraph before it. The argument presented is persuasive. The insights of two other philosophers are incorporated into the analysis.
    95 points
3.Essay fulfills assigned task: The essay addresses the entire assigned question or topic, elaborating on important ideas in satisfactory depth, but without bringing in anything extraneous or irrelevant. The introduction of the essay focuses and provides clarity for the paper. Important terms are clearly and accurately defined. Each paragraph conveys a coherent, organized thought. Short (one sentence) quotations are occasionally used, when appropriate, to support the writer’s analysis, and an explanation is offered for each quotation. No more than 10% of paper is made up of direct quotes. No block quotations.
    40 points
4.Essay obeys standards for good persuasive writing: the writer shows that he or she is comfortable using philosophical language, and the prose is clear, not awkward. The structure of the sentences reflects the relationships between/among the ideas discussed.
    40 points
5.Essay is technically correct: The essay has been carefully and thoughtfully proofread. The argument is written in complete sentences, with punctuation that does not mislead the reader. There are no mistakes in spelling, grammar, word choice, and punctuation.

Describe relevant concepts from the chapter that you can infer may be affecting each of their memories for the event.

Ratuja, Donna, and Pascal are three friends out shopping at a local mall. Ratuja and Donna are in a jewelry store when a robbery sudden occurs. Glass is heard shattering and an alarm starts sounding. A panicked and hooded figure runs out of the store with a handful of rings and necklaces. Once outside, the criminal pauses to look for an escape route, and then darts off towards the nearest exit.

Security arrives and gathers a few witnesses to get information on the hooded criminal. Ratuja, Pascal, and Donna are among the witnesses brought in for questioning. All the witnesses are questioned at the security station across the way from the jewelry store that was robbed.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

TASK: For this scenario, I want you to think about long-term memory and the many factors that affect the encoding and retrieval of information in situations like these. Think about what you learned about depth of processing, encoding, retrieval, and several other factors that affect people’s recollection of episodic events.

On the following page there is some information about Ratuja, Pascal, and Donna. Use this information to determine which of them would be the most reliable witness. Describe relevant concepts from the chapter that you can infer may be affecting each of their memories for the event. You should highlight at least two, but no more than three, relevant memory concepts per person. Then declare the most reliable witness based on that information.

NOTE: Focus only on memory factors that are evident in the information about the three friends. Don’t make assumptions about things that you have no information about (example, you assume one of the friends could have been rehearsing the perpetrators’ face in their mind without any evidence they were). You must correctly discuss relevant chapter concepts for full credit; as always highlight concepts in bold when you use them.

Information about Ratuja

  • Ratuja was in the jewelry store when the alarm went off. However, she was in a different section of the store from where the crime occurred.
  • Before security arrived, she was talking to other witnesses around her. Some witnesses mentioned seeing a weapon, others described the perpetrator as being blonde. She did not clearly observe a weapon or the perpetrator’s hair color.
  • Ratuja is Indian but the perpetrator appeared to be American or European.
  • Ratuja watches lots of crime shows. Criminals on her shows tend to be male. She saw an episode once where a crook carried a hammer to shatter a case with jewelry in it. The criminals on her shows also tend to wear black outfits and black gloves.
  • Ratuja is one of the last ones interviewed at the security station, which is across from the jewelry store.

Information about Pascal

  • Pascal was not at the jewelry store when the crime occurred, but he was right across from it. He saw the perpetrator when he/she paused outside the store to choose an escape route.
  • He also got a quick look at the perpetrator’s hair, which appeared to be long and brown with blonde highlights. It reminded him of a doll his sister would carry around whenever they played games together. However, he is not too confident about this.
  • He never experienced anything like this before; it was a unique situation for him.
  • He was among the first interviewed at the security station. The interview took place right next to where he was standing when the crime occurred.

Information about Donna

  • Donna was in the jewelry store in the same section as the perpetrator, only a few feet away from him/her before the crime occurred.
  • As soon as she heard the alarm go off, she became very frightened. She was not able to calm down until well after the incident ended. However, she did get a look at the perpetrator as he/she scooped up handfuls of jewelry.
  • This is not the first crime Donna has experienced. She has a vivid memory of when she was in a bank when someone tried to rob it at gun point.
  • Security tried to be very encouraging when they questioned her. They told her “report as much as you can because any information you can provide will be useful.”
  • She was shown pictures of past criminals. Security asked her to rate how confident she was that any of them had committed the crime. She said she was “almost absolutely sure” one of the pictures looked like the thief at the store.
  • Donna was the first one interviewed at the security station across from the jewelry store.

Read the epigenetics article you find. Continue your paper with a discussion of the epigenetics article. Be sure to paraphrase (put things in your own words) and be sure to cite the author(s) of the article you find using APA style (see the section below on using APA style). Aim for about a page for this part of your paper.

 Instructions for Reaction Paper

The Reaction Paper Assignment

You will be writing a 1,000 word Reaction Paper in this course using the instructions and links found below. You will be completing the following tasks and gathering the following information for your paper:

1. Watch the epigenetics video from PBS available as a YouTube link in this folder (second item in the folder). Begin your paper by defining epigenetics in your own words and discussing your reaction to the video.

2. Interview your family members and complete the  Family History-Dr.OZ.pdf.  Find out which disease(s) you are most at risk for.

3. Research and locate one article on epigenetics and whatever disease you are most at risk for (select a study on research conducted on humans) from a reputable academic source:

Reputable Sources:

· journal articles

· government publications based on research

Do not use:

· magazines of any sort, whether they are on paper or online

· Websites of any type, including epigenetics websites

· Wikipedia

·

Read the epigenetics article you find. Continue your paper with a discussion of the epigenetics article. Be sure to paraphrase (put things in your own words) and be sure to cite the author(s) of the article you find using APA style (see the section below on using APA style). Aim for about a page for this part of your paper.

4. Discuss the concept of epigenesis in light of your family history and the article you read. Aim for one page for this section of your paper.

5. Complete the Living to 100 Questionnaires. Integrate your findings on the questionnaire into your discussion. Aim for another page.

6. Discuss how you can improve your health and longevity in light of your findings in this questionnaire, your understanding of epigenetics, and your knowledge of your family history. This should be your final page.

You can go over or under a page for any of the sections of the paper as long as your total paper is 1,000 words not counting the references.

General Rules for an “A” Paper (check your paper against this list)

1,000 words

Original work; plagiarism score of less than 10% (90% original work)

College-level grammar

Cite your article APA style (author & year within body of paper; full reference at end)

No abstract, no cover

Place your name and reference number on the first page. Use page numbers.

Avoiding Plagiarism

You must be careful not to copy someone else’s ideas and not to copy and paste ideas from the sources you find. Copying and pasting from someone else’s work is considered plagiarism. You may use other people’s ideas, but you have to put them in your own words and reference the source. Putting things in your own words is called “paraphrasing.” And you must put the reference right after the idea. Needless to say, submitting plagiarized papers, including those copied from one of the Web sites that have “free” papers or even papers you can buy, will result in a penalty. That penalty in this course is that your grade will be reduced by the percentage of plagiarism over 10%. In other words, the less plagiarism, the higher your score; the more plagiarism, the lower your score. The paper is worth 10% of your grade in this course. Don’t risk it!

APA Style and References

One thing you will need to do in college is learn how to find and use references. References support your ideas. College-level work must be supported by research. You are expected to do that for this paper. You will research, locate, and use one reputable source from the literature on the topic of epigenetics/epigenesis. The “literature” is composed of studies that have been conducted in a scholarly way to support ideas. Scholarly sources can be found in journals or in some Web sites, especially those that come from .edu domains (.edu is short for “educational” Web sites) or .gov domains (.gov are government sites). The College Libraries have dozens of good journals you can use. You will be using the College Library for this paper. You may do the research in person or use the Web to access our library. See your librarian for more information on finding credible sources.

In APA style, you cite a source in two places: within the body of the paper where you use the idea or words of the author of the paper; and again in the Reference List at the end of the paper. For example, you might say, “According to Researcher A (2011)…epigenetics is…” What you must do is supply the researcher’s name within a sentence or at the end of a sentence in parenthesis (Smith, 2011). Then you give the full information for locating the study in the Reference List. That’s what Reference Lists are for: they allow the person reading your paper to look up your source if they want to. So remember, citing references APA style, requires two things: 1) that you cite the reference within the body of the paper, and 2) that you list the full reference at the end in the Reference List.

Examine the risk factors and the various protective factors that may mitigate the level of risk. Identify any gender differences that impact the salience of these factors.

There are various risk factors—multiple environmental and developmental experiences—that may lead to criminal behavior. Some examples of these risk factors may include, but are not limited to, a history of violence, abuse or trauma, substance abuse, peer rejection, or cognitive limitations. These risk factors can be further broken down into the risk of impact to the individual, family, peer, and community.

Multiple protective factors have been identified as having a significant propensity to reduce risk. These factors include promoting strong attitudes against violence, success in academic achievement, and forming positive peer relationships. There is a significant amount of literature available that examines the salience of each risk and protective factor.

Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research environmental and developmental risk factors that may lead to criminal behavior. Select two peer-reviewed articles for use in this assignment.

In this assignment, you will take on the role of a supervisor at a juvenile detention center. You have been charged with training psychology interns on the salience of risk and protective factors. This is important information they must consider when assessing this population or providing treatment. You will utilize the selected articles to support your assertions.

As part of your training for the interns, you will create a scripted Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that covers the following:

  • Examine the risk factors and the various protective factors that may mitigate the level of risk.
  • Identify any gender differences that impact the salience of these factors.

Be sure to include detailed speaker’s notes that elaborate on the main points of each slide. Also include a title slide and a slide listing your references in APA format. Include complete reference details for your selected peer-reviewed articles.

Develop a 9–11-slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Wednesday, September 10, 2014, deliver your assignment.
