Explain to the individual in the scenario, in layperson’s terms, relevant theory and research that addresses the social psychological variables involved.  Summarize a clear intervention strategy, formulating advice regarding future behavior.

The Consultant     Social influence is pervasive. Understanding mechanisms by which our own behavior is influenced can help us intentionally shape the behavior of others.  In this discussion, we will consider various forms of social influence by creating an intervention designed to address a particular concern in one of many real world settings.  To inform your thinking on this topic, begin by reading “Harnessing the Science of Persuasion” (Cialdini, 2001), “Social Influence: Compliance and Conformity” (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004), “Cognitive Consequences of Forced Compliance” (Festinger & Carlsmith, 1959), “Behavioral Study of Obedience” (Milgram, 1963), and “Attribution Versus Persuasion as a Means for Modifying Behavior” (Miller, Brickman, & Bolen, 1975).  Then, imagine yourself as a consultant in one of the following scenarios.  You are responsible for developing a plan to modify behavior, which will be based on social psychological insight.  Select one of the following options and design a program, supporting your answer with scholarly and peer-reviewed sources. Explain to the individual in the scenario, in layperson’s terms, relevant theory and research that addresses the social psychological variables involved.  Summarize a clear intervention strategy, formulating advice regarding future behavior. •A business executive seeks assistance in creating a comprehensive plan to market a product. [You may choose the product.] •A lawyer is requesting insight regarding jury behavior in order to achieve more favorable trial outcomes. •A prominent member of the community is considering a run for political office and would like advice regarding successful campaign strategies. •A doctor is concerned about rising rates of illness due to personal behavior and wishes to provide appropriate counsel to patients in order to change behavior for the better. [You may specify the type of illness or behaviors, as necessary.] •A substance abuse counselor is alarmed by recent statistics on drug and alcohol use amongst younger and younger children and would like to design a targeted program to address this issue. •Other (as provided/approved by your instructor)

Based on your analysis, rate each participant on a scale of 1–5; 1 for not credible and 5 for highly credible. Support your rating with information from the Week 4 Learning Resources and the specific debate.

  • Select one of the following U.S. presidential or vice presidential debates as the focus of your assignment:
  • John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon: September 26, 1960
  • George H. W. Bush and Geraldine Ferraro: October 11, 1984
  • Barack Obama and John McCain: September 26, 2008
  • Access the media link related to your chosen presidential or vice-presidential debate in the Learning Resources to view the debate. (You are not required to watch the entire debate.) Access the associated transcript for reference in citing examples from the debate.
  • Review the Week 4 reading in the text, paying particular attention to the relevant information in Chapter 8. For example, note core characteristics and biases of persuaders.

Submit a 3- to 5-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Describe examples from the debate that exemplify the core characteristics of the debaters.
  • Explain the role of context in the debate.
  • Describe the debaters’ biases.
  • Explain the impact of the debaters’ social attractiveness on your analysis.
  • Based on your analysis, rate each participant on a scale of 1–5; 1 for not credible and 5 for highly credible. Support your rating with information from the Week 4 Learning Resources and the specific debate.
  • Evaluate your biases for or against each candidate, and explain how they informed your rating of the person.

Clearly, Jesse Jackson’s intent in his speech to the APA was to encourage, even inflame, his audience, and the APA as a whole, to actively and aggressively pursue his perception of social, racial and economic justice in the United States (Jackson, 2000). He highlighted economic inequalities, racial injustices and universal healthcare for all as the focal points of his speech and repeatedly stressed democratic solutions to these issues (Jackson, 2000). One of his most egregious claims was in his use of the biblical phrase “the least of these” in conjunction with an inaccurate reference to the biblical parable of the lost sheep (see Luke 15, Matthew 25). The principle Jackson (2000) was attempting to attach to his reference of the “least of these” was that it was not simply the responsibility but the central mandate of the psychological community to research, understand, address and, if possible, solve issues of economic, racial and social justice. Jackson (2000) all but demanded that psychologists focus their attentions on these issues both in the present and in the future.

I do not have the time, nor do I feel the need, to refute the numerous inaccuracies, misrepresentations, false equivocations and ideological assumptions inherent in Jackson’s (2000) speech to the APA. Instead, I will focus on a more generalized disagreement with his ideological and political assertions concerning the United States and its future. The moral high ground Jackson (2000) proclaims to espouse is simultaneously above reproach and built upon false conclusions and inaccurate information. Jackson (2000) is correct in his assertion that the culture and society of Unite States of America has its social, racial and economic problems. However, his conclusion of social, racial and economic injustice and his solutions are both illogical and unfeasible.

Discussion – Week 1

The Relationship Between Research and Practice

All too often, the very idea of research creates anxiety instead of interest. Fear of statistics and resistance to the language of research can become a barrier to learning to analyze professional counseling literature. So, this course will begin with an exploration of your perceptions and biases about research.

Addressing these preconceived notions about research helps pave the way to understanding the role of research in counseling practice. Consider this: If you consulted your primary care physician for treatment of a disease, you would not want to learn that you were prescribed medication that was proven to be ineffective or to cause harm. The same is true for counseling practice. Counseling research helps keep clinicians up to date on what works and what does not.

For this Discussion, you will explore the relationship between research and practice and how you might anticipate using research in your future counseling work.

To Prepare

  • Review the Learning Resources      related to research and evidence-based practice and consider how these      resources inform your Discussion.
  • Review the Learning Resources      related to how to search the Walden library for articles related to      evidence-based practice.
  • Search the Walden Library for one      current (within last 10 years) peer-reviewed article in the professional      counseling literature related to the use of empirical evidence in      counseling practice.
  • Reflect on how other disciplines      use research in their work.

Post by Day 3

Based on your search experience through the Walden Library:

  • Explain your perceptions,      concerns, fears, or assumptions about research.
  • Post any questions or concerns you      have about successfully completing this course.
  • Explain how you anticipate using      research in your future clinical work citing the article that you choose      from the counseling databases.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
