Consider the importance of the scholar-practitioner understanding a client or research populations’ perception of time to in terms of appointments, business organization, and risky health behaviors.

The perception of time varies among cultures. Some cultures operate on actual clock time while others areevent-centered. Event-centered time is less structured than clock time and focuses only on current events and circumstances. For example, in Africa, time is flexible, and it is based on events in the past, present, and the future. Time is perceived through the life of the individual and the tribe. (Shiraev & Levy, 2010) How might your culture’s perception of time impact your life?

The cultural influence on time is not limited to differences in minutes and seconds. This perception might also affect behavior and attitudes if a culture is short-, middle-, or long-time oriented. Studies suggest there is a correlation between time and lifestyle, such as the pace of life, health, and happiness.

Consider the importance of the scholar-practitioner understanding a client or research populations’ perception of time to in terms of appointments, business organization, and risky health behaviors.

For this Discussion, consider your own ideas about time and how culture might influence the perception of time. Use your  culture of interest and select another culture with a differing time orientation.

With these thoughts in mind:

WRITE an explanation of how culture might influence the perception of time. Provide an example from two cultures and explain how each culture differs in its members’ perception of time.

. What other variables were added to the multiple regression models as controls?

    • This Discussion assists in solidifying your understanding of statistical testing by engaging in some data analysis. This week you will work with a real, secondary dataset to construct a research question, estimate a multiple regression model, and interpret the results.Whether in a scholarly or practitioner setting, good research and data analysis should have the benefit of peer feedback. For this Discussion, you will post your response to the hypothesis test, along with the results. Be sure and remember that the goal is to obtain constructive feedback to improve the research and its interpretation, so please view this as an opportunity to learn from one another.

      To prepare for this Discussion:

      · Review this week’s Learning Resources and media program related to multiple regression.

      · Create a research question using the General Social Survey that can be answered by multiple regression.

      By Day 3

Use SPSS to answer the research question. Post your response to the following:

      1. What is your research question?

      2. What is the null hypothesis for your question?

      3. What research design would align with this question?

      4. What dependent variable was used and how is it measured?

      5. What independent variable is used and how is it measured?

      6. What other variables were added to the multiple regression models as controls?

      7. What is the justification for adding the variables?

      8. If you found significance, what is the strength of the effect?

      9. Explain your results for a lay audience, explain what the answer to your research question.

Be sure to support your Main Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Determine what your thesis is and state it clearly and concisely. It should briefly introduce your topic but more importantly should indicate that your purpose is to compare and contrast the merit of the pop psychology article with the merit of the empirical article. This will be the first sentence of your essay.

Compare and Contrast Paper

You are to locate one source of pop psychology and one source of empirical research and compare and contrast the merit of the information in each as follows:

Begin by searching in the appropriate place for 2 sources that are fittingly related to each other on any topic in Psychology. Empirical research can only be found in professional journals. The easiest way to find a professional journal article is by accessing PsycINFO through the portal at my.saintleo.edu then locating the online Library. Pop psychology sources are newspapers, news magazines, tabloids, and other self-help articles found either online or on store shelves. Examples include articles by Dr. Phil, Dear Abby, Dr. Laura, Tony Robbins, etc. Articles in Psychology Today and WorldHealth.net are pop psychology and, although they may report on or refer to empirical research, they are not professional journal articles.

To prepare your essay, you should think critically about the merit of the information in each article by asking the following questions about each:

a.) What is the main issue, problem, or intention of the article?

b.) In what way(s) does the article investigate various points of view and assumptions?

c.) What evidence is provided to support the issue?

d.) In what way(s) does the article discuss consequences and implications of the reasoning provided?

e.) In what way(s) does the information provided help you make an informed decision about the purpose?

Now, focus on the answers to the above questions and compare and contrast the 2 sets of information.

Determine what your thesis is and state it clearly and concisely. It should briefly introduce your topic but more importantly should indicate that your purpose is to compare and contrast the merit of the pop psychology article with the merit of the empirical article. This will be the first sentence of your essay.

In the body of your essay, you may do a whole-to-whole comparison of the 2 sets of information or you may do a (less common) point-to-point comparison. For a whole-to-whole comparison, address the information about one of the articles by discussing its merit using the critical thinking concepts above, then, do the same for the second article. For point-by-point, you should address the first important point about one article then that same point about the other, discuss a second point about one then the other, and so on. You will want to be very thorough in the body as this is a very large percentage of your grade on the essay.

Your conclusion should summarize how the merit of the pop psychology article compares and contrasts with the merit of the empirical article, thus reaffirming your thesis without restating it. This is where you conclude with inferences, clearly address implications or consequences of accepting the given information, and culminate any assertions.

Provide the full DSM-5 diagnosis for the client. Remember, a full diagnosis should include the name of the disorder, ICD-10-CM code, specifiers, severity, and the Z codes (other conditions that may need clinical attention). Keep in mind a diagnosis covers the most recent 12 months.

Of the substance disorders, alcohol-related disorders are the most prevalent even though only a small percentage of individuals actually receive help. Recidivism in the substance treatment world is also very high. As research into treatment has developed, more and more evidence shows that genes for alcohol-metabolizing enzymes can vary by genetic inheritance. Women have been identified as particularly vulnerable to the impacts of alcohol. Native Americans, Asians, and some Hispanic and Celtic cultures also have increased vulnerability to alcohol misuse.

Even with these developments, treatment continues to spark debate. For many years, the substance use field itself has disagreed with mental health experts as to what treatments are the most effective for substance use disorders and how to improve outcomes. The debate is often over medication-assisted treatment (MAT) versus abstinence-based treatment (ABT). Recently the American Psychiatric Association has issued guidelines to help clinicians consider integrated solutions for those suffering with these disorders. In this Discussion, you consider your treatment plan for an individual with a substance use disorder.

To prepare: Read the case provided by your instructor for this week’s Discussion and the materials for the week. Then assume that you are meeting with the client as the social worker who recorded this case.

Post a 300- to 500-word response in which you address the following:

  2. Explain the diagnosis by matching the symptoms identified in the case to the specific criteria for the diagnosis.
  3. Describe the assessment(s) you would use to validate the client’s diagnosis, clarify missing information, or track her progress.
  4. Summarize how you would explain the diagnosis to the client.
  5. Explain how you would engage the client in treatment, identifying potential cultural considerations related to substance use.
  6. Describe your initial recommendations for the client’s treatment and explain why you would recommend MAT or ABT.
  7. Identify specific resources to which you would refer the client. Explain why you would recommend these resources based on the client’s diagnosis and other identity characteristics (e.g., age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, class, ethnicity, religion, etc.).
