Select one of the following theories from your Reading, explain the theory and how it relates to infant and toddler development, and write a short scenario that exemplifies the theory

Respond to the Discussion topic below. Your original response should be at least 350 words and should reflect the fact that you have completed the assigned Readings for the week. Remember, this is your chance to illustrate not only your understanding, but also your mastery of the materials for the unit. Carefully select your words so that your responses contain a balance between theory, experience, and your thoughts. Limit the use of direct quotes and describe the ideas in your own words instead. Include specific citations when necessary and attempt to make each post additive in nature (add new and relevant information to your Discussion).

In this Discussion, you will apply developmental theories to infant and toddler development.

Discussion Topic

Select one of the following theories from your Reading, explain the theory and how it relates to infant and toddler development, and write a short scenario that exemplifies the theory. Once you have written your scenario, read those of your classmates and discuss how you would help the hypothetical client in these scenarios. Practice using your understanding of infant/toddler developmental theories in your responses to your classmates and pretend that you are a therapist assigned to work with the client in each scenario.

Theories used in the sample: nonorganic failure to thrive, separation anxiety, language development issues

Sample scenario: Tom

Tom is a 2-year-old male whose parents work many hours during the week. While his parents work during the week, he stays with his grandmother, who has difficulty keeping up with him throughout the day. She spends much of her time ignoring him by watching television instead of playing with him. When Tom’s parents brought him to you, he seemed to be very small for a child his age and showed some severe developmental delays. He did not speak many words and did not seem to be putting together sentences yet. His parents brought him to you because he screams and yells every morning when his mother leaves him at his grandmother’s house.

Each essay will review a different topic from the text and will also link each topic with Scripture. Each essay should have a word count of at least 500 words.

Using the Jerry Falwell Library, select two full-text, scholarly (peer-reviewed) journal articles that directly relate to the topic for each essay. The textbook may be used, but does not count toward the two required scholarly references.

What is the recommended method of treatment?  How long does it take for the symptoms to abate?

Your book report must be a minimum of three pages double spaced typewritten to a maximum of five pages double spaced typewritten.

Your book report must follow these strict guidelines to receive the highest possible grade.  Failure to comply with any of the following will result in a loss of points.

In the first part of the book report, you should give a summary of the book.  This summary should contain information about the problem(s) that the book addresses. It should discuss the underlying etiology (causes) of the problem or illness.  In addition, it should mention the author’s approach to addressing the problem such as a behavioral, psychoanalytic, humanistic, cognitive, or epigenetic approach.  Furthermore, if the author uses a combination of approaches such as humanistic and behavioral, then you should indicate that in your summary. In addition, for the problem which the book addresses, what is the prognosis.  For example, if the book is about depression, what is the prognosis for those who are depressed.  What is the recommended method of treatment?  How long does it take for the symptoms to abate?   Also, what kinds of psychologists seem to be best equipped to deal with this problem/illness?  You could respond to this by indicating clinical psychologists, counseling psychologists, organizational psychologists, educational psychologists, or school psychologists.

The second part of your book report should contain a personal reaction to the book.  For example, do you know anyone who has the mental illness or social problem which the book describes?  How do you feel about them now that you have read this particular book?  Do you believe that your relationship with them can change and that the changes will help them get better?  What can you do differently when encountering people who have this problem?  How can you use the information in the book to help others around you understand the people who have this illness or problem better?  What strategies does the book offer for loved ones and relatives to use in addressing the problem?

The concluding part should discuss how reading this book has changed you personally.  Any anecdotal stories that you want to share to emphasize your point of view will enhance the personal aspect.

Create a document that includes a transcript of a call from the patient’s point of view based on the information in the case study including basic personal information and reasons for seeking out psychotherapy.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read Chapters 3, 4, and 17 in DSM-5 Made Easy: The Clinician’s Guide to Diagnosis; Cases 18, 19, and 20 from Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology; and Chapter 1 in Psychopathology: History, Diagnosis, and Empirical Foundations. It is recommended that you read Chapter 1 in Turning Points in Dynamic Psychotherapy: Initial Assessment, Boundaries, Money, Disruptions and Suicidal Crises.

For this discussion, you will choose from one of the three “You Decide” case studies included in Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology. The case study you choose for this discussion will also be the case study you will use for your Psychiatric Diagnosis assignment in Week Six.

In your initial post, you will take on the persona of the patient from the case study you have chosen in order to create an initial call to a mental health professional from the patient’s point of view. In order to create your initial call, evaluate the symptoms and presenting problems from the case study, and then determine how the patient would approach the first call.

Create a document that includes a transcript of a call from the patient’s point of view based on the information in the case study including basic personal information and reasons for seeking out psychotherapy. The call may be no more than 5 minutes in length. Once you have created your transcript you will create a screencast recording of the transcript using the patient’s voice. Based on the information from the case study, consider the following questions as you create your recording:

  • What would the patient say?
  • What tone of voice might he or she use?
  • How fast would the patient speak?
  • Would the message be understandable (e.g., would it be muffled, circumstantial, tangential, rambling, mumbled, pressured, etc.)?
