How about someone who does not believe that humans are contributing to the conditions that cause climate change? How about someone who denies that the Holocaust occurred?

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 16
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Introduction
Facione & Gittens (2016) state, “Strong critical thinking about complex and difficult social policies demands that we respect those with whom we disagree” (p. 344). The authors of your text ask us to take seriously the points of view of those with whom we disagree.

  • Should I respect the point of view of a misogynist – a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women?
  • Should I respect the point of view of a racist?
  • How about someone who believes marriage is only between one man and one woman?
  • How about someone who does not believe that humans are contributing to the conditions that cause climate change?
  • How about someone who denies that the Holocaust occurred?

Initial Post Instructions
For the initial post, pick one point of view from the five questions above that you find particularly repugnant – one that you think is completely unjustifiable. If you were in conversation with such a person, how could you ethically respond to the statement of such a point of view? Keep in mind that you are expressing a value opinion, which requires ideological reasoning, so you may want to review Chapter 13.

As you form your response, keep in mind the following; these are things you need to think about but not necessarily to write about in your initial post:

  • Reflect if you are using System-1 or System-2 thinking? Are your responses tinged with cognitive bias?
  • Do you think there is a qualitative difference between believing some races are inferior and the belief that marriage should only be between one man and one woman?
  • Do you think there is a qualitative difference between not believing in human contribution to climate change and not believing in the Holocaust?
  • Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside source)
  • APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Discuss how you intend to construct the items, cognizant of the basic principles of item pool construction, the necessity of SMEs, the unidimensionality or multidimensionality of the construct, etc.

Instructions

For this task, complete the   readings for this assignment, and then write a paper in which you complete   the following:

  1. Write an introduction that examines the construct, its conceptual definition/s, and related concepts.
  2. Review the literature and the existing tools that measure the construct.
  3. Provide justification for your original scale.
  4. Discuss how you intend to construct the items, cognizant of the basic principles of item pool construction, the necessity of SMEs, the unidimensionality or multidimensionality of the construct, etc.
  5. Write at least 20 sample items that represent the construct you are planning to measure. You may construct negatively worded items, but indicate these in a chart or table. If the construct you choose has two or more dimensions under it,        write sample items indicating which items fall under which dimension.        (See for example, the Life Position Scale that contained four dimensions        I’m OK etc. at first, but after factor analysis the dimensions reduced        to two—I and You.) These are attached to the assignment
  6. Argue for a specific method        of running an item analysis procedure.
  7. Argue for at least two        specific methods of establishing your scale’s validity (Choose at least        one method for construct validity, and another method for        criterion-related validity. In criterion validation, it is not enough to        simply write that you are planning to employ the method. Be sure to        specify the variable(s) you will correlate your scale with.

Length: 10-15 pages

Your assignment should demonstrate   thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts by providing new thoughts   and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect   scholarly writing and current APA standards.

Review the Learning Resources for this week and think about how groupthink, individualism, and collectivism impact your daily life as well as your professional work.

Think about a time when you worked in a group to achieve a specific goal. This may have been planning a party, working in a collaborative group for school, or working through a project for work. Consider the benefits and challenges as you worked through to achieving your goal. Now, think about if you added diversity to your group. Your group members may be from another country or even have very little experience or education. How might this impact the overall outcome of your project? As you begin to consider your future professional work, you might find that it will be necessary to work and collaborate with others to accomplish specific goals. Because of this, groupthink, individualism, and collectivism will be critical to understanding the behavior of others in the workplace.

For this Discussion, you will explore individualism and collectivism and how each might impact the dynamics of a group.

  • Review the Learning Resources for this week and think about how groupthink, individualism, and collectivism impact your daily life as well as your professional work.

Consider the following: Imagine you are on a team at work and have a deadline quickly approaching. The project is critical to your employer’s success. Your eight-person team is composed of diverse workers. There’s a range in age, gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, and experience level, among other distinctions. Your team’s progress has encountered some challenges. Some team members are managing home and work-life duties and other team members are having difficulty working together across their differences.

Post and provide a definition of individualism and collectivism. Based on your knowledge from culture and psychology, list three possible solutions to accomplish the looming deadline of the project in the scenario provided and why these solutions would be the best possible solutions.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and identify current relevant literature to support your work.

Post your display of the table or figure you created and provide an explanation of why this would be the best way to display the data provided.

Imagine you are walking into a cave and traveling further and further inward, where no light can reach the inner most spaces. Suddenly, light illuminates your path and you begin to see a series of rooms, natural springs, and a variety of cave paintings on the walls and ceilings. As you observe the paintings, you realize the story told by people from years past, depicting a way of life through a visual display of images.

Even long ago, visual displays were used to communicate thoughts and ideas to others. Sometimes, just as in the visual displays on cave walls, pictures are the best way to tell a “story” where narrative words may not be sufficient. It still remains true today that “graphics are one of the most important aspects of data analysis because they allow us to visualize the data and the patterns in the data” (Dietz & Kalof, 2009, p. 66). Such is the case in statistics, where displaying data is critical.

In this week, you will examine the different ways to display data and understand why visually presenting data can illustrate the “story” of the data. You also will begin to create your own visual displays of data to further your knowledge and skill set.

Discussion: Displaying Data

Visual displays of data provide you and anyone else with a graphical display of what is often a complex array of quantitative data. A key strength of visualization is the ability to quickly enlighten you with key data. Rather than solely relying on your audience to interpret numerical values and statistics explained in a narrative, a visual display can easily illustrate descriptions, relationships, and trends. Although the focus is on simplicity, the researcher has an obligation to present these graphical displays in a clear and meaningful way.

For this Discussion, you will explore ways to appropriately display data.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the      Learning Resources for this week related to frequency distributions and      graphic displays of data.
  • Using the      SPSS software, open the General Social Survey dataset found in this week’s      Learning Resources.
  • Next,      create a figure or table from a few selected variables within the dataset.
  • Finally,      think about what is good about how the data are displayed in the figure or      table you created and what is not so good.
By Day 3

Post your display of the table or figure you created and provide an explanation of why this would be the best way to display the data provided.

Be sure to support your Main Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.
