Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling and the DSM-V

Though the philosophy and values surrounding marriage, couple, and family counseling emphasize prevention and wellness, awareness of diagnosis is important when interacting with other mental health professionals who may view mental health issues through the medical model. The DSM-V, the primary diagnostic system/manual used in the United States by such professionals, identifies and describes individual mental health disorders, not relational issues or disorders.

Those mental health professionals who adopt a systems or relational view of mental health have been able to implement small changes within the DSM in its subsequent editions, and these changes acknowledge the systemic influence on certain individual disorders. Nevertheless, there is not yet an adopted diagnostic structure for relational problems. Therefore, you may sometimes need to negotiate your relational perspective with other professionals and communicate client matters with insurance reimbursement boards (who see mental health problems as individual in nature) in their language.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 an example of a specific instance in which you may need to consult with another mental health professional who utilizes the DSM-V. Then, explain how your familiarity with the DSM-Vmay influence this consultation. Next, explain one advantage and one disadvantage of a marriage, couple, and family counselor being familiar with the DSM-V. Be specific.

Unit 10 DiscussionDiscussion TopicTask: Reply to this topic

Throughout this course, many opportunities are available to post an initial response to a Discussion topic as well as to respond to your classmates’ responses. After you have completed the reading, and without reviewing your classmates’ responses, post your initial response to the following Discussion. Your post should be at least 350 words in length and should extend the discussion of the group supported by your course materials and/or other appropriate resources. After you have submitted your initial post, review some of your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two of your classmates. Refer to your Discussion Board Rubric in your Syllabus for specific grading explanation.

Discussion 1: The Impact of Parenting Styles

You can observe a number of parenting styles in action just by walking into a grocery store. Consider the parent who hands over a smart phone to keep a child busy, the parent who has strict rules about staying by the cart and not wandering off, and the parent who allows a child to run the aisles and load treats into the cart without asking. Clearly, each of these parents has a rather different parenting style. It could also be assumed, then, that each of these children has rather different experiences at the store, at home, and in daily life.

From a counseling standpoint, how much will these different parenting styles truly affect each child? Specifically, how might experiences shaped by parents affect their children’s identities and who those children become as adults? What affect (if any) might a given parenting style have on a young child’s emotional stability?

For this Discussion, review this week’s media, “Perspectives: Working with Young Children.” Then, consider how cultural and environmental influences can affect both parenting style and a young child’s identity.
