Submit Chapter 3: Methodology to your instructor for feedback and grading. Include your revised Chapter 2 Literature Review for additional feedback. The literature review must directly align to Chapter 3.

Methods Draft

Preparation

Remember that the most important element of your project is the research question. Before submitting this assignment, be sure that you have an instructor-approved research question. It is essential that you identify the purpose of the project as a reflection of your research question. As the project develops, the research question, theory of method, and theory of content should be highlighted in chapter submissions.

Please use the appropriate project guide to identify all required elements needed for a complete Chapter 3 methodology. Remember to incorporate instructor and peer feedback from discussions before submitting Chapter 3.

Resources

Provide a brief summary of at least 2 reasonable and scholarly theories which could explain the mystery.

Write a 4-5 paragraph essay (of at least 250-500 words) which adequately address the topic and requirements stated below.

STEP 1: TOPIC SELECTION

Select a topic from the list below and include this topic on your title page.

Pyramids at Giza
There have been many theories regarding how the pyramids at Giza were constructed. Most experts agree that they were constructed as burial monuments for pharaohs, but “how” these ancient people constructed monuments of such great size without modern machinery is a mystery which is still being debated.

Tutankamen
Tutankhamen died young, at approximately eighteen (18) years of age. However, his cause of death has been the subject of quite varied scholarly theories and conclusions. Did he die of an injury, of illness, of murder, or something else?

Great Zimbabwe
Great Zimbabwe is an enormous complex of structures in East Africa. Since the builders and occupants left no written records, several theories have developed as to the identity of its builders and the functions of the structures. Which theory makes the most sense?

Tomb of Shihuangdi
The monumental size and complexity of the Tomb of Shihuangdi is astounding, yet its location and construction details were to be kept secret. What was the emperor’s purpose for such an elaborate, secret burial place?

STEP 2: MYSTERY & THEORIES

Describe the mystery as though someone is hearing it for the first time.

Provide a brief summary of at least 2 reasonable and scholarly theories which could explain the mystery. Because some theories may sound far-fetched, include the source or promoter of each theory – such as a scientist, a historian, a theologian, etc.

STEP 3: EXAMINING THE MOST PLAUSIBLE

Identify 1 of the theories that you summarized above as the most plausible.

Provide at least 2 convincing reasons why the theory you have chosen is the best one to explain the mystery.

STEP 4: REFERENCES & CITATIONS

Include a reference page that identifies at least 3 references.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 from the Frost (2011) e-book.

For this discussion you will take on the role of a clinical psychologist treating clients for depression. You are interested in doing research on effective treatments for a chronic form of depression called dysthymia. In the DSM-5, it is referred to as persistent depressive disorder. The DSM-5 is listed in your recommended resources, and details regarding the disorder can be found in section 300.4(F34.1).

In your review of the current materials, you find that most of the previous research on this disorder has been done using quantitative methods. Identify an aspect of this topic you feel should be studied using qualitative methods. Apply the scientific method to this research issue and develop a specific research question. Compare the characteristics and appropriate uses of various qualitative research designs and choose an appropriate qualitative  design for this research question. Create a feasible research design that includes plans for the sample selection, data collection, and data analysis. Apply ethical principles to your design by explaining how this type of qualitative design may affect the participants in your study and how you will deal with sociocultural issues.

Analyze the case of Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton. How is it possible to be so sure that you recognize a face when it is not the right person?

In this discussion forum, you will explore the imperfect content of our memories of experiences. For your initial post, complete the following steps:

In the videos, Loftus describes the ease with which false memories can be created or altered. Yet people like Paul Shanely are incarcerated, convicted of heinous crimes based on the testimony of men who have claimed to have repressed memories of years of childhood sexual abuse until adulthood. The two sides of the argument are referred to as “The Memory Wars.” For this discussion, choose one of the following prompts:

  • Analyze both sides of the Shanely case. Which side is best supported by the scientific evidence? Which one do you support and why?
  • Analyze the case of the Ramona family. How could the daughter repress such memories for so long? Does the fact that her father successfully sued the therapist prove that the memories are false?
  • Analyze the case of Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton. How is it possible to be so sure that you recognize a face when it is not the right person?
  • Provide an overview of Loftus’ research. How does that prove (or not) that memories can be created or altered?

Use your critical thinking skills and present a cogent analysis and argument for the position you choose to defend. Support your points with evidence from at least one peer-reviewed research article. Your initial post must be a minimum of 300 words.

Explain how a forensic psychology professional might apply the information in this research study to a clinical forensic setting, and in what circumstances, including but not limited to situations in which a forensic psychology professional must conduct an evaluation of a patient for his or her potential suicide risk and/or potential involuntary hospitalization. Be specific.

Forensic psychology professionals working in clinical forensic settings such as state hospitals or prisons often are tasked with assessing whether a patient may be at significant risk for committing suicide. If a person is assessed to be suicidal, then involuntary hospitalization of the patient likely will follow. However, in the United States where the right to life and liberty are protected by the Constitution, to deprive a person of his or her liberty requires extraordinary circumstances. State statutes vary in their language regarding involuntary psychiatric hospitalization, but the underlying threshold common to all such statutes is when someone is eminently dangerous to self or others. One type of research of use to forensic psychology professionals working in clinical settings is that which studies the potential risk for suicide.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Using the Walden Library, conduct a search for an article that addresses suicide risk, evaluation of suicide potential, and/or involuntary hospitalization of forensic populations. Select one such article for use in this Discussion.
  • Carefully review the article paying close attention to the subjects being studied, the assessment instruments used, the method of study, and the results/recommendations.
  • Consider how the data contained in and the results of this research study might be used by forensic psychology professionals in clinical forensic settings.

The assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Briefly summarize the research study you selected. Be sure to include the data and results of the study that you think are applicable to clinical forensic settings.
  • Explain how a forensic psychology professional might apply the information in this research study to a clinical forensic setting, and in what circumstances, including but not limited to situations in which a forensic psychology professional must conduct an evaluation of a patient for his or her potential suicide risk and/or potential involuntary hospitalization. Be specific.
