Identify legal, ethical issues in theories of personality and psychotherapy

Vignette Analysis II:

This  assignment focuses on vignette analysis and direct application of  course concepts to the persons and situations presented in the vignette  for each question. All discussions must take into account the legal  and ethical considerations, as well as issues of culture and human  diversity that may pertain to the situations presented below.

Please  keep your responses focused on what is presented in the vignette. Do  not add information but use your creativity to support what you see in  the vignette as written. All assignments MUST be typed and  double-spaced, in APA style and must be written at graduate level  English. The content, conciseness and clarity of your answers will be  considered in the evaluation of your work. You must use and integrate the material presented in the course text and cite your work according to APA format. Use of outside resources for culture-specific information to enhance your vignette analysis is encouraged.

This assignment should be 6-7 pages total plus a Title and Reference Page

Each  panel will take into consideration the research on personality and the  brain as well as culture and legal/ethical issues that might arise.

For this assignment you are to present this case from each of these panels of experts:

Panel I: Phenomenological Theorists

Panel II: Trait Theorists

Panel III: Biological/Genetic Theorists

John,  a 28 year old, Hispanic male, is seen in an initial interview at a  community mental health clinic. He has been diagnosed as Chronically  Mentally Ill. He resides with his mother and grandmother. Both his  father and grandfather committed suicide in their early 30’s. John is  afraid that he is fated to join the male-dominated generational pattern.  John is oriented to reality and does not appear to have any  disturbances in perception or thought. He does appear to be severely  depressed and anxious during your interview.

Mezirow, J. (2003). Transformative learning as discourse. Journal of Transformative Education1(1), 58-63.

Annotation Example
In this article, Mezirow (2003) makes a distinction between “instrumental” and “communicative” learning. “Instrumental learning” refers to those processes which measure and gauge learning, such as tests, grades, comments, quizzes, attendance records and the like. “Communicative learning,” on the other hand, refers to understanding created over time between individuals in what Mezirow calls “critical-dialectical-discourse,” (p. 59) which is a fancy way of saying, important conversation between 2 or more speakers. Another key idea Mezirow discusses is “transformative learning,” (p. 61) which changes the mind, the heart, the values and beliefs of people so that they may act better in the world. Mezirow argues that “hungry, desperate, homeless, sick, destitute, and intimidated people obviously cannot participate fully and freely in discourse” (p. 59). On the one hand, he is right: there are some people who cannot fully engage because their crisis is so long and deep, they are prevented. But, I don’t think Mezirow should make the blanket assumption that everyone in unfortunate circumstances is incapable of entering the discourse meaningfully. One thing is certain: if we gave as much attention to the non-instrumental forms of intelligence–like goodness, compassion, forgiveness, wonder, self-motivation, creativity, humor, love, and other non-measured forms of intelligence in our school curriculums, we’d see better people, actors in the world, and interested investigators than we currently have graduating high school.

Research  a minimum of four of the eight scholarly sources related to these  concepts in the Ashford University Library to support your statements in  the paper.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review sections  1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 of Chapter 1 in the text. In addition, read the e-book  sections by Glanz (n.d.) and Saucier and Srivastava (2015).

The  major assignment for this course is the development of your personal  Integrative Personality Theory.  In this paper, you will select one  concept from each of the seven models covered in this course to include  in your theory.  Note that this is not meant to be an overview of each  model, and the paper cannot focus on just one model.  Rather, you are to  select a specific concept from a theory in each model, and you must  include one concept from each of the seven models in your final paper.   Click here for examples of some of the main concepts from the Psychodynamic Model

In  this week’s assignment, you will begin work on the final paper.  You  will complete the specific secions of the paper that are indicated  below.  This allows you to begin work on this major assignment and  receive formative feedback from your instructor in order to improve  final submission. Please use this template  to build your Integrative Theory of Personality paper.  It is APA  formatted already and will guide you through the needed sections.

Instructions for the week three required sections:

Introduction:   Provide a general introduction to the topic of theories of personality.  Explain what you plan to cover and describe the direction your paper  will take. Note: This section will not feature a heading.

Major Concepts
In  this section, you will present the seven specific concepts identified  from the seven models you think best apply to the study of personality  in distinct subheadings.  For each concept, identify the major  personality model from which the concept was taken as well as the  theorist associated with that model.  Each concept section should be  approximately 3-4 paragraphs.  For week three, you need to complete two of the seven total required by week five.
Click here for an example of how to structure your discussion of each concept.

  • Psychodynamic Model Concept
  • Neurobiological Model Concept
  • Behavioral Model Concept
  • Cognitive Model Concept
  • Interpersonal/relational Model Concept
  • Trait Model Concept
  • Self-Psychology Model Concept

Excluded Concepts
In this  section, present the concepts you have chosen to exclude in your theory  of personality development.  Reflect on the basic assumptions that  define personality and identify three specific excluded concepts from  any of the theories studied in the course.  For each of the excluded  concepts, provide a rationale explaining the various aspects of the  concept that make it unsuitable for your use and compare and contrast it  with the concepts you have chosen to include.  Each concept will be  approximately 2-3 paragraphs.  In week three you need to flesh out the section for one of the three-all three are due in week five.

The Differences between Healthy and Unhealthy Personalities
Describe  the basic differences between healthy and unhealthy personality, based  on the concepts that you have chosen to include and exclude from your  theory.  This section will be approximately two to four paragraphs.  Start the draft in week three to be finalized in week five.

The Roles of Heredity, the Environment, and Epigenetics
Provide  your analysis of the roles heredity, the environment, and epigenetics  play in the development of personality.  Discuss how heredity and the  environment might affect personality disorders.  This section will be  approximately three to five paragraphs.  Start the draft in week three to be finalized in week five.

Assessment and Measurement of the Theory
There is no requirement in week three for this-the section must be completed by week five.

Self-Reflection
In  this section of the paper, review the self-reflection you wrote in Week  One of this class and describe how and in what ways your views have or  have not changed.  Analyze your Week One self-assessment using the  concepts that you have included in your integrative theory and describe  how your theory explains your personality.  This section will be  approximately four to six paragraphs.  Start the draft in week three to be finalized in week five.

Conclusion:  There is no requirement in week three for this-the section must be completed by week five.

Research  a minimum of four of the eight scholarly sources related to these  concepts in the Ashford University Library to support your statements in  the paper.  Popular websites and your textbook may augment, but they  will not count toward the minimum number of sources needed for the  paper.

The assignment:

  • Must be four to five double-spaced pages in length (not including  title page and references page) and formatted according to APA style as  outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use at least four scholarly sources in addition to the course text.
  • Must document all sources in APA style.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style

Discuss possible therapeutic interventions that might be applied in your case, based on your chosen model.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 10 of the course textbook. Pay close attention to the two case illustrations in Section 10.4 as these may inform the creation of the illustration in your initial post. Also, read the articles An Integrated Approach to Treatment of Patients With Personality Disorders and Pathological Personality Traits Can Capture DSM–IVPersonality Disorder Types (Clarkin, Cain, & Livesley, 2015; Miller, Few, Lynam, & MacKillop, 2015).

BOTH ARTICLES AND TEXTBOOK CHAPTER 10 ARE PROVIDED IN ATTACHMENTS!!

For this discussion, select one of the personality disorders discussed in Chapter 10 that you find interesting, then conduct web research to find a person (i.e., living or not, historical, famous, and/or even fictional) who suffers from the disorder you chose to serve as a case study. Then choose a model of personality that will serve as a framework for devising a theoretical explanation and therapeutic intervention for the case you selected.

For your initial post,

  • Describe the personality disorder for the case study you selected.
  • Apply the theories in your selected model to explain how the disorder may have developed for your particular case and what may have been the underlying causes. The primary focus here should be on the theoretical explanation of how your chosen disorder may have developed and should not be a detailed description of the disorder.
  • Discuss possible therapeutic interventions that might be applied in your case, based on your chosen model.
