Assignment 3: Understanding Human Diversity, Cultural Diversity & Special Populations Individual PowerPoint Presentations (Total: 100 Points) – Competency 1 (P.B. 1.2); Competency 2 (P.B. 2.1, 2.3); Competency 3 (P.B. 3.1) Competency 4 (P.B. 4.1, 4.2, 4.3); Competency 5 (P.B. 5.1, 5.2, 5.3) – Due Date: September  21, 2020

There are special populations such as children and youth, the elderly, the homeless, individuals with physical and mental disabilities, police brutality victims, AIDS patients, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, women and minorities, environmental issues, including ethnic minorities bring unique needs and circumstances that must be recognized when the social worker serves these persons. There are also societal induced stressors and factors identified by many in society that subordinate, discriminate, oppress and affect special populations that must be addressed, understood and alleviated. These stressors and factors are identified in rural, urban and suburban sites of practice. Therefore, social work students need to be sensitive to these stressors and factors along with racial, ethnic, and cultural factors when working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, and colleagues.

Students are assigned to work individually to complete the following assignment in understanding human diversity, cultural diversity, and special populations:

1) Use the selected group below to research and locate information from books, refereed peer-reviewed journals, or other evidence-based research articles.

2) Using your critical thinking skills, provide your overall reaction to the authors’ presentation of the special population that you are researching. For example, do the authors’ research present stereotypes, value judgments or judgment conflicts?

3) Practice personal reflection and self-correction to assure continual professional development by answering the following questions: Do you have biases toward the diverse group? Explain. As a worker, identify how you eliminate biases and how professional values guide social work practice?

4) Discuss whether your understanding of the special population changed or remained the same after researching the population; and

5) Present your findings in a PowerPoint presentation identifying your reactions to the questions and statements listed in 1-4.

Individual Assignments:

*Group 3 – Social Work Practice with Children & Youth

You are a school counselor. What steps might you take to address the event presented in the case scenario with the faculty and students?

Read the following case scenario to develop an intervention plan using community resources from your local community.

Portillo Elementary school is a charter school that caters to ‘gifted’ students. On Monday morning, faculty and students came to school to hear the news that an instructor died in a vehicle accident over the weekend. Several instructors and students immediately became tearful upon hearing the news.

Upon reading the case scenario, write a 750-1,000-word paper, which includes the following:

  1. You are a school counselor. What steps might you take to address the event presented in the case scenario with the faculty and students?
  2. Identify three community resources that you will incorporate into your plan and explain why.
  3. Develop an intervention plan that addresses short-term and long-term clinical and community strategies.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

This assignment assesses the following programmatic competency:

5.1: Explain professional roles and expectations in the field of behavioral health.

explain how diversity might shape and influence his/her cognitive and social-emotional developmental processes

Cognitive, physical, and social-emotional developmental processes influence and interact with one another. For example, a child’s ability to consider another person’s perspective will, in part, determine the quality of friendships and how long they are maintained. An adult who is physically mature has the cognitive capacity to weigh the pros and cons of becoming sexually active. Keep in mind that the relative importance of cognitive, physical, and social-emotional developmental processes may vary depending upon the age of the individual (e.g., infant, adolescent, young adult, older adult) and any physical or developmental challenges that may arise.

For this Discussion, you will examine cognitive, physical, and social-emotional processes at a specific period of a character’s life.

A)- Post a brief description of the fictional human character (i.e., cartoon character, film/TV character, virtual character) and the event/period of time you selected. Describe two of the three developmental processes—cognitive, physical, and social-emotional—and explain whether they were affected and/or changed in relation to the event/period of time. Be specific in your post and provide examples.

B) -Understanding the impact of diversity on an individual’s cognitive, physical, and social-emotional developmental processes requires an examination of a multitude of characteristics, including gender, race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, etc. In addition, behavior within a group is important to examine, along with the similarities and differences of behaviors and attitudes across groups.

The goal of understanding the impact of diversity is not to determine whether one group is inferior to another, but to gain an appreciation of the breadth and depth of variability in human behavior. Cross-cultural investigation allows for the testing of theoretical concepts and predictions to evaluate their generalizability (Jensen, 2012). Another outcome of studying the results of cross-cultural research is that, as a psychology professional, you will be better equipped to empathize with and advocate for those you will be serving.

For this Discussion, you will explore how diversity shapes and influences cognitive and social-emotional developmental processes.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review and consider the same fictional human character from your discussion above
  • Also, consider only the cognitive and social-emotional developmental processes and how diversity* shapes and influences these processes.
  • *Diversity includes but is not limited to gender, race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, etc. It is not the same as adversity, which refers to a difficulty or tragedy in one’s life.
  • Think about the kinds of attitudes and behaviors that might be generated from someone who grew up in a collectivist society, which is common in Asian cultures, compared to the attitudes of someone who grew up in an individualistic society, such as that found in the United States.

Post a 1- to 2-sentence description of the fictional human character (i.e., cartoon character, film/TV character, virtual character) you selected. Then, explain how diversity might shape and influence his/her cognitive and social-emotional developmental processes. Be specific in your post and provide examples. Use your Learning Resources and/or other scholarly sources to support your post. Use proper APA format and citations to support your post.

Assignment 1: Begin Your Journey With Problem Statements

Failure versus success road sign, with an arrow for each going in opposite directions.Have you ever tried to solve a problem but the solution did not work out? What went wrong? Oftentimes, we solve problems through trial and error. This type of approach may be appropriate for simple problems when a bad decision may not have great consequences. However, when problems are complex and you anticipate that the consequences of your decisions may have a significant impact, you must plan your decision carefully. This planning may include considering how you addressed a type of problem in the past or considering multiple approaches.

In this week’s Learning Resources, you explored systematic approaches to problem solving. If you dissected a specific problem that resulted in a dysfunctional solution, could you identify the step or approach that did not work?

This Assignment is all about you. So, just what is YOUR problem, and what is keeping you from a solution? The best solutions for problems most often begin with a solid problem statement.

By Day 7

Submit 1–2 pages in which you explain a problem that has been troubling you. It might be something in your discipline, neighborhood, or community. It might be a problem in a field that interests you, such as a problem that is keeping you from moving forward in your field. Consider your perspective of the problem and whether others would have the same or a different perspective.

Refer to steps in the Problem-Solving Guidance Handout (see the Learning Resources) as you address the following in your paper:

  • Formulate a problem statement.
  • Describe your own perspective of the problem. Then, describe the problem from at least one perspective other than your own.
  • Answer the following questions about the problem:
    • Who is affected by the problem?
    • When does the problem happen?
    • Where is the problem happening?
    • Why solve it? Why not?

Assignment 2: Summary Blog

With the use of technology, individuals can reach beyond the borders of the home, local community, and nation. The emergence of social media, in particular, has transformed the way people communicate.

Through the use of one of the most popular forms of social media—blogging—interactions among individuals can lead not only to an increased access to information (and, at times, misinformation), but also to an exciting exchange of ideas and opinions.

In this course you will create a blog. The goal of this blog is to support the development of an interactive atmosphere and help you get to know your colleagues as individuals and professionals. In addition, through the use of this blog, you may contribute to your understanding of the problem-solving process by disseminating noteworthy information and generating interest in tackling social change issues.

A Note About Blogging: The purpose of the Blog Assignments is for you and your colleagues to get to know each other as professionals and to enrich each other’s collection of ideas, resources, and personal experiences in relation to this course and the program at large. Your blog entries can be less formal than your writing for your coursework. Keep in mind, of course, that anything you publish on the Internet may become public, and be available to prospective employers and collaborators. Use your best judgment when deciding what to share and cite your sources when appropriate.

Summary Blog Post

In this week, you create a blog to which you will contribute throughout this course. Refer to the Blog Guidance and Suggestions document for instructions on how to create your blog.

After you have created your blog, create a document with this information:

Blog Links Board, your name, the link to your blog

Post this document in the Doc Sharing area of this course, located in the Course Navigation menu.

Be sure to open your blog for RSS feeds, so that your colleagues and others may subscribe. Sign up for the RSS feeds of your colleagues’ blogs as well.

To prepare for your blog post:

In one paragraph, summarize how the Learning Resources in Week 1 extend your understanding of problem solving.

By Day 5

Post this paragraph in your blog. If you have not already done so, post a link to your blog in the Doc Sharing area with this information: Blog Links Board, your name, the link to your blog

Read your colleagues’ blogs and consider what resonates with you. Contribute to at least one colleague’s blog.
